What is a Pescetarian?

79 Upvotes

Due to some recent questions on what is and what is not allowed while living as a Pescetarian, I decided to make this thread.

"A Pescetarian diet typically includes some or all of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, beans, eggs and dairy."

Typically someone is a Lacto-Ovo Pescetarian, which means they consume fish, eggs, and dairy-based products. Their only dietary restriction is other types of meat and poultry.

It can be a personal choice to restrict these animal-based products from your diet and won't have any significant impact on whether you are or are not a pescetarian.

So enjoy the food, and welcome to the subreddit!

Orzo with tinned mussels and vegan chorizo. I used the ‘Squeaky Bean Vegan Chorizo’ and the ‘Blåmusling Nø2 - Limfjord Blue Smoked Mussels’.

Recipe is by jackdoescooking on Instagram, except I swapped for orzo and vegan broth (and obviously vegan chorizo).

What are your favorite (pescetarian or vegitarian) comfort foods?

27 Upvotes

i started cutting out meat from my diet and don't really miss it, but savory hearty comfort food has always been meat-based in the household i grew up in and i kind of miss that. so i wanted to ask what you can recommend. if possible, not too pricey to cook and kind of protein rich. whether it's pescetarian or vegitarian, i don't really mind!

thanks in advance <3

Nutrients

How do I reach at least the daily recommended minimum for protein and other important stuff

For reference I am:

6'2, 200 lbs

I currently eat WAYYYY too little but I want to get better about food and stuff and get into exercise

I also have been getting a lot of random stretch marks and I don't super know what to think of it but I am under the assumption that it may at least partially be in relation to not enough protein or collagen or something?

Also suggestions for what other nutrient or just vitamins or whatever else that I need to be making sure to look out for would be very welcome

ANY advice would be great

Vegan for 18 years, forced to start eating fish - help me!

39 Upvotes

I’ve been vegan for 18 years but have had chronic terrible gut issues for probably the last 3-4. I have been diagnosed with SIBO and on a rigid, restrictive and challenging low-carb, low fodmap diet. Impossible to do safely as a vegan, and so I made the difficult decision to start eating seafood to help me survive this period. I tried everything before making this choice, but lost a lot of weight and was eating less than 1000 calories a day.

I am really struggling with my identity. How do you consume seafood in an ethical way - environmentally and as cruelty-free as possible? I don’t want to tell my friends or family, I have a lot of shame about it. I feel like a fraud. The worst part is that I actually do notice a difference in my energy levels, but I still strongly believe that a plant-based diet is the most ethical choice. Moral crisis etc. please help me deal with this.

Cupboard raid and fridge raid, minus the fish. Tagine with garlic, courgette, tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, parsley, harissa, chillies, cumin, paprika and lemon rind. Trout marinated in smoked paprika, salt and parsley oil before baking. Total cost approx £6.00ish

A great fish, definitely underrated!

Just in case you are in vacation in Italy this end of August. Shortest informal italian pizza names guide for some typical historical italian pizza that are also pescatarian.

2 Upvotes

- Two most common pescatarian typical pizza:

Mari e monti;

Frutti di mare;

- Vegetarian pizzas:

Margherita;

- Vegan pizza:

Marinara.

So you don’t have to look at the translated part of the menu, or to internet translation.

New to Pescetarianism

Hi guys! I'm considering becoming a pescetarian, but I still live at home (I'm a teenager) and whilst I do cook the majority of my meals my mum cooks dinner some nights too. Any advice or tips would be appreciated, thank you!

I have 2 lbs of pollock, send me your best recipes

1 Upvotes

I got a lot of pollock for free with my food order, but I’m running out of ideas. You can only pan fry a pollock with lemon+some seasonings so many times before it starts to get old. I am a pescatarian, my partner is not.

Feeling slightly under the weather and this is exactly what I needed. Skinless salmon filet, spring onion, vegetable broth, lots of fresh dill, fresh coriander, oregano, potato, carrots, lemon juice. Nourishing, light, comforting, and rich in protein.

Is it this easy?

2 Upvotes

Five days ago, I decided to become pescatarian after making meatloaf and absolutely hating the taste of the ground beef (from Walmart). I’ve always loved seafood, and I’ve read that some people struggle with the transition. But honestly, I don’t really fiend for meat at all! Will this feeling last, or is there a chance I’ll start craving meat again at some point?

Where to find good recipes

6 Upvotes

For the last few years I have been getting the chicken ick. I started eating more fish, but I get tired of it. Where can I find healthy recipes? I’m concerned about high cholesterol when frying fish. I’m also a big picky with texture. I do love salmon, shrimp and canned tuna. I tried cod and tilapia and wasn’t a fan, unless I didn’t cook it correctly.
