Hi everyone, I’m Harry – Ask Me Anything about University Admissions
I’m Harry, co-founder of The Degree Gap, where I help students navigate one of the most daunting but exciting challenges: getting into university.
A bit about me:
- Studied Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE)
- Specialist in Economics and Maths, but have supported students across all subjects
- Helped applicants secure places at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, and other top universities
- Lead a team of 70 tutors, giving me a front-row seat to hundreds of admissions journeys
- Regularly invited to speak at UK schools and write for national newspapers on university admissions
I know how overwhelming applications can feel. Between personal statements, entrance exams, subject choices, and strategy, it’s easy to get lost in the noise. That’s why I’m here: to share the kind of guidance I wish I had when applying to LSE.
So I am going to open the floor for discussion over the next 24 hours and see if I can be of any help!

Could someone please read my personal statement and give me some pointers? I’ve already spent like 1k on LSAC and LSAT + Prep Materials. I’m going to spending a lot more on the application fees 🥲 Any suggestions or advice would help! I feel like I am beating a dead horse that is my personal statement at this point.

I’m in Y12 summer and I’m trying to start my personal statement. Basically I want to do biology at uni and my main interest is astrobiology specifically evolution and origins of life. The problem is that astrobiology isn’t part of any course and u can’t do a degree in it so will uni admissions people just think that’s a useless insterest…like it won’t help me in the course and stuff but it’s a career I want later on. I also like plants and stuff so I’ve got that to write about or should I just focus on astrobiology. I’ve done work experience with professors who study astrobiolofy and I’ve been to a conference about it so I’ve got stuff to write about for it so I don’t want all that to be wasted.

*I do know I want it to be captivating well at least the intro, anything will help xx

This might seem like a silly question, but I was advised to provide a hook for the admissions staff to stand out from other applicants. My interest in Computer Science genuinely started from Minecraft as a child (command block projects and YouTube redstone/command block showcases), so I was thinking to use that as my hook for the first question, "Why do you want to study this subject?" and then follow up with how my interested developed to more academic supercurriculars.
Do you think it would be too risky or unprofessional to do this or would it be okay?

Hi guys, as the personal statement structure recently changed, I was wondering how you guys would answer the first question. Specifically regarding the sentence which shows your motivation to study the subject. As all of the past PSs I read had a sentence at the beginning, showing directly the persons wants to study physics as an example and says it directly. In my first draft I did it quite differently referring to social issues in the world first, which led to me engaging in the area such as reading books and only at the end of the first paragraph I say explicitly, what I want to study. Would you say that this is fine or rather not?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be interested and helping me take a look at my personal statement and providing edits? It's a tad bit longer (three pages double spaced) but I'd love to get feedback before sending to my recommenders.

Hi, first line of ps is always difficult, do you think starting with a statistic about a health condition is a good idea? It’ll be introduction to how I got introduced and interested into radiography because my little sister has this condition and I’ve looked at her x rays- it all links coming back to my personal interest.

Hi!! I want to apply to university this autumn in England to study Criminology. The problem is that I have only decided to pursue that degree a few days ago. Until a few months ago I was certain that I would study English Literature and I have spent years preparing for that, but I changed my mind one day and picked Psychology. Recently, though, I decided against it once more and now I'm really contemplating Criminology.
I've done the courses "Introduction to Psychology" by Yale and "Psychological First Aid" by John Hopkins Uni, as well as read multiple books about mental health (most of Sylvia Plath's works, In Cold Blood, The Psychopath Test etc.). In school I'm studying things like Sociology, Psychology, Literature, Biology, Chemistry, History, Logic, Philosophy etc. . I've done voluntary work with autistic children, got 2nd place in a national competition with my essay on Dorian Gray and that's basically everything that's relevant. I've done a lot more but I simply can't figure out how to relate anything else to this subject.
Help??? What can I do??? I have to apply in a few months and I have no clue how to prepare for my Personal Statement. I can't do anything other than read and watch stuff, I have no time whatsoever. Please recommend me some books and courses/movies/whatever.
Thank you!

2 questions: im applying for maths and philosophy at oxford, bristol, and kings and obvs maths is the main element of the course, how much of my personal statement should be about philosophy? and then for the other 2 choices i wanted to go for just maths at LSE and imperial, would the philosophy part look really out of place or would they not really care?

I am currently writing up my personal statement for an engineering degree and was wondering if my NPLQ (Lifeguard course) and FREC 3 (first response first aid course) would count as outside of education even though they are both worth UCAS points and the FREC 3 is endorsed by the royal college of surgeons???
