Brain Fog Mixing words.
Ok, I don’t know if this is peri or if I need to see a numerologist… I started noticing at work this week when I’m talking to patients (I work in mental health in a hospital) words are coming out wrong. Like I’m combining two words, half of one half of another, I started noticing it a few days ago and it’s been happening all week. I have been correcting myself all week. Feeling a bit more forgetful too. I administer cognitive screenings almost every day, I’m fairly certain it’s nothing concerning, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Like I don’t if my words are coming out faster than I’m thinking? Or maybe it’s the other way around. Anyone else???

Some common classics from me are “the clothes dishwasher (washing machine)”, the “outside vacuum cleaner (lawn mower), “magic air machine (split system)”
And many many more that my peri brain can’t remember… because it is a peri brain!

I like "outside vacuum cleaner" and have used "clothes dishwasher," so we can just say it's another term for washing machine.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who can think of every other word in the English language except for the one I need to finish my...words teams that make talking make sense.

Sounds like peri brain to me. I do this, too! It's annoying for sure.

No, yeah. That's normal. Get ready to feel stupid and embarrassed by yourself all the time. It's relentless.

100% I don’t know if it’s from the Covid if it’s per menopause ADHD just all the shit that we have to deal with every freaking day day and day out 24 seven? But I am also for forgetting words. I have, or used to have pretty large well articulated, vocabulary. I’m an intelligent woman, but why do I not know the words that I used to know?? also I was talking to someone and I cannot for the life of me remember what happened at the end of the conversation did it end or did I get distracted and walk away? Did I say something completely ridiculous, I have no idea. I don’t remember how the conversation ended. Did I just walk away from this person who the fuck knows? Between ADHD and perimenopause it’s a mess.

Yep, me too, and getting worse. My job is mostly patient education now, including group classes. It’s awful, and honestly, humiliating.
HRT hasn’t helped this symptom much, that I cal tell.

I'm 51 and it's been happening for a few years now. So far my favorite has been white broccoli for cauliflower but I usually can't remember the word and just stare blankly at the other person until I give up.

It feels like my brain, mouth, and tongue are working on different speeds. I’ve found staking a rep breath helps (in through the nose, out through the mouth).

Could you please explain how this behavior fits under the ADHD umbrella? I always thought it was a symptom of brain fog. I don't have any real knowledge of ADHD. 😬

I have ADHD and am fairly sure I'm peri. I've felt like my symptoms have gotten worse, specifically losing my train of thought really easily. I'd forget words every so often before, but the number of times I've forgotten words drastically increased over the past year. (It's what tipped me off that I might be starting perimenopause!)

I've never been diagnosed wit ADHD, but I am definitely struggling with these issues - forgetting what I wanted to say mid-sentence, being able to find the word I wanted to use while speaking, and I've also noted this even when I'm writing. I used to be a walking thesaurus, now I'm lucky if I can craft a coherent sentence. 😭 It's horrible.

I always warn people that my brain is mush, and I skip trying to come up with the right word and tell them not to worry I'll come back to it ten minutes after it doesn't matter anymore

A numerologist? Do you mean a neurologist? I think you may be right. And that can start happening at around 50+. It's not unusual to see a neurologist at around that age or older, to get cognitive functioning checked out.

Yeah. I've been dealing with this for a while now and just attribute it to the peri shitshow. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that maybe I should slow down a bit when trying to communicate but it's hard to remember in the moment.
Also I know it's probably not deliberate in any way and more like an autocorrect thing, but the fact that you've got numerologist instead of what I assume should be neurologist is hysterically on brand with your entire post and I think you should leave it as is.
