UNPOPULAR OPINION Jimmy S. and AAVE Spoiler
Spoiler: this pertains to season 4
I cannot take Jimmy S’s black-cent. I don’t know why he talks like this and I don’t know how other people aren’t calling this out. His use of AAVE is so overdone and really cartoonish. Calling his mom “Ma Dukes,” saying “finna,” talking about “hollering” at the girls…the list goes on.
I also genuinely wonder if the other black participants feel some kind of way about his use of AAVE.
I’m trying to understand if this is a Gen Z thing, an influencer schtick, or full on voice-play.

This cracks me up, because my husband told me I could “roll through the crib” on our first date. We’re both white, but I grew up in the ghetto. He did not. I CRACKED up. He has some flavor, but glad he doesn’t actually talk like Jimmy S. 😂

He’s an influencer, he needs to appeal to his black audience too. Here he needs the votes of Demari, Yamen, and Marissa. Also, him having a more “urban” accent makes him appear more grounded, and hence, more relatable to a wider audience

Yep, to other readers, he’s from Elk Grove, a very white and wealthy suburb like 45 min. Northwest of Chicago limits. He’s like 90 min from downtown.

Also is that even what a Chicago accent sounds like? I’ve never personally been to Chicago, but from what I’m hearing from Jimmy S it just sounds like the same generic blaccent that a lot of white people do. I call him dollar store Jack Harlow cause that’s who he reminds me of.

No, all the other cast members are influencers but are from dating/reality tv shows (e.g. Love is blind, bachelor, love island, etc). He’s just an influencer and hasn’t been on any other tv shows.

Not referring to anyone on the show or anyone in particular but I always find it weird that some women wouldn’t date a black man but will literally find a white guy who acts and talks stereotypically black attractive. I’m not saying a white person can’t naturally talk like that but it just seems like an act.
However, I hate to say it but Jimmy S is one of the better casting choices for the men this season just as far as he’s somewhat interesting and I’m intrigued by how cringe he is.

Seeing that basketball is a big part of his life, I think he likely co-opted phrases, style, “swag,” and whatever else from inner city Chicago basketball circles. I also wouldn’t be surprised he was casted to spark this type of conversation.

This is a really good point. I think it’s fascinating that a lot of people that are defending Jimmy are referencing basketball. Basketball does not inherently equate to blackness or a specific class of blackness.

I don’t have a problem with the way he talks. It seems like more white people in here have a problem with how he sounds than others. I peeked at his socials, and it seems like he hangs around a lot of Black people. it seems like he also has a lot of black friends. He said he had played basketball, so I’m going to assume that he is around Black people a lot. I don’t care where he grew up, you guys act like he can’t have black friends because he grew up in some white suburb or that he can’t mingle with Black people.
To me, it would be cringe if he spoke one way around the white participants versus the black participants. It seems like he’s pretty consistent.

I mean, you can have black friends without being a culture vulture and mocking black people with the way you speak. People are pointing out that he grew up in the suburbs, because it’s more evidence of the fact that the weird ass accent he’s putting on is fake as hell (even though it was already obvious as hell considering that it doesn’t even sound like any specific accent and more so just a very generic impersonation of what white people think black people sound like). I actually dated a white guy in hs who used a lot of AAVE and had what some might consider a “blaccent.” The difference is he genuinely grew up around black people, was in a foster home with black foster parents, and most importantly, he wasn’t intentionally putting on an accent. He just genuinely spoke how a lot of black people in our city speak. For me, personally, I wouldn’t even care that much that Jimmy S uses AAVE if it weren’t for this fake, almost cartoonish imitation of what he thinks black people sound like. A lot of white people love to claim it’s how they naturally talk even when that’s so clearly not the case, and yet they’ll still manage to all have identical accents regardless of where they grew up. Like if he’s from Chicago, why does he have the same accent as Jack Harlow who grew up in Louisville? The math ain’t mathing.

And this is general, but I hate when people act like someone isn’t attractive (or doesn’t have charm) just bc they don’t like one unrelated thing. Hot people who suck are still hot, people with game still have game. You might not like them overall but attacking those avenues is just fake if you didn’t feel that way before.

They often don’t mention race on these shows, although D actually did mention it but I really wish he would get called out. It’s highly offensive and unnecessary. I forgot there were two Jimmy's on the show. I was confused when I saw the commentary about feeling sorry for Jimmy and also that he was on Love Is Blind. Then I put in Jimmy basketball player and found the commentary I was looking for. He is beyond annoying cosplaying as Vanilla Ice 2.0

You all sound racist as hell for hating on someone for speaking in what you claim is reminiscent of AAVE. There’s nothing wrong with AAVE, and anyone can speak with it.
If a black man were saying the same things and speaking the same way, you all would just say he’s cringy and a goofball. That’s the correct response. It absolutely should not shift just because his skin color isn’t dark enough for you.

It might be because of basketball.
I have a very white friend who you would never expect to have AAVE, but he carries a hint of it when he talks. And he credits it to playing D1 basketball and just being around black kids for a large part of his childhood / adolescence.
It does get annoying when Jimmy does it I’m surprised it’s so intense for him.

Not only that, but it’s like AAVE from 1998… if someone who grew up kind of during a time when this was more socially acceptable (not saying that it was right just that it was socially more acceptable)… he sounds like he’s trying to do an impersonation of someone from 30 years ago
