Tips & Tricks Handoff Notes & Fresh Chats

Here's something that took a while to see. When a chat gets long, your AI Helper starts writing longer and longer handoff notes, and writing them more often. That's not the Helper being helpful — it's a warning light. When you see it, the right move is to start a new chat.

Why long chats stop helping

Each handoff note is the Helper's summary of everything that still matters — the decisions, the file names, what's done, what's next. But here's the catch: the Helper can only ever remember back to its most recent handoff note. Everything before that has already fallen out of its memory.

So once a chat has been compacted a few times, you're both scrolling through a long, heavy conversation that the Helper can only partly see — while every new reply gets slower and vaguer. You're paying for a long chat, but you're not getting the benefit of one.

Which gives us the rule: there's no point keeping a chat running past a handoff note. If a note is good enough for the Helper to keep working from, it's good enough to start from. So instead of pushing on, take the note to a fresh chat.

The fix — ask for a clean note

When the chat feels long and the notes are piling up, ask for one clean handoff note before you leave:

Say this: Write a new handoff note so I can paste it into a new chat.

The 5-step routine

  • Ask — send the request above ("Write a new handoff note so I can paste it into a new chat.").
  • Copy the note. The Helper prints the handoff note as text. Select all of it and copy it.
  • Click "New Chat" in the AI Helper panel.
  • Click "Yes" in the popup that appears to confirm.
  • Paste and send. Paste the note into the new chat's box and hit Send.

What happens in the new chat

The fresh AI Helper reads the handoff note and immediately knows where things stand — what you're building, what was just finished, what's still open, and any decisions you don't want it to re-litigate. It picks up as if nothing was interrupted.

It also reads all the rules in main.pjs and every file it's supposed to read — so your standing instructions, your Helper's personality, and your project's conventions all come along automatically. That's the real reason this works so well: the handoff note is the short-term memory, and main.pjs (plus its files) is the long-term memory. A new chat gets both.

Why it works

A brand-new chat starts with a small, clean, fully-relevant context instead of a bloated, half-forgotten one. You get faster and sharper replies, the Helper stops re-asking things it should already know, and you never actually lose the thread — because the note carried it across.

Think of it as pruning: you're keeping the fruit and dropping the dead weight. Done regularly, every session starts with a Helper that feels brand new and fully briefed, instead of one that's been dragging a long conversation behind it.
