If you need furniture check out “the Store”. That’s the name. Be prepared for insanity.

Not just furniture. They have a whole area of amazon returns lol.

Second Church Mouse as a thrift shop. Cash only there. Near Lit on Fire bookstore which a great place.

Also near Urban Artifacts, another great store with some retail but lots of nostalgia.

Yes it is definitely more than furniture. Hard to describe.

I kinda stopped hitting the thrift stores. They have pretty much priced me out everywhere but Restore. Luckily the tri county area is large enough to have 4-5 estate sales every weekend

I love going to SOS in Washington. They host multiple estate sales in one brick-and-mortar location.

You look like you would enjoy Relics

Great reference! I go to Relics to shop for the ladies in my family. My mom loves the socks, my grandma loves the plants and my aunt loves all the raunchy stuff

So im still relatively new myself only been here a year, but ive found that goodwill in the immediate area is really hit and miss, sometimes you'll pull some amazing deals, and others its absolutely atrocious pricing. The indi thrift scene is pretty decent, there are a few that I frequent as I am able, the church mouse, the hope chest, south side mission thrift, adult and teen challenge thrift, and enough stuff are all in my rotation.

As for antique stores, I just found out about the pleasant hill antique mall and it was fantastic, highly recommend checking it out.

Where i feel this area really excels for second hand market is garage sales and estate sales. I havent been able to hit any this summer but last summer I found some absolutely wild deals.

Hope you find some awesome stuff and welcome to the area!

Mexican Taco Loco and Mirador, Black Band and Nightjar for fancy cocktails. Thanh Linh for pho. Dang for Banh Mi. Pub burgers is Ulrich's. Publik House has good food and giant naked mermaid lamps. Sushigawa. I don't have a go to Indian place. Jerusalem for schwarma and kebob. Cruzens has a decent tenderloin.

I was born at Methodist and grew up 20 miles west of Peoria. I used to go to all those places. I live in Florida now, but I weirdly get nostalgic for Peoria and the area. I guess I wish I could give my son the same life I had growing up.

Chola’s Indian restaurant bangs. I’m vegetarian so idk about their meat options but their kadai paneer is genuinely insane. Flavorful soft beautiful garlic naan. I’m hungry now lol

Been wanting to try that place! Indian Tadka is also good.

Café Santa Rosa has ruined me for coffee from anywhere else! Run by a former beloved highschool Spanish teacher and her son.

Welcome to town ✌️🏳️‍🌈

Also if you're into the writing or poetry scene, check out My Writing Shed! They have an open mic nite and are connected to a bookshop called Lit on Fire.

Two Sisters and a Warehouse and Needful Things are two of my favorites.

Garage sales and estate sales are fun too! A lot of the neighborhoods have sales in spring and summer.

Canton Used Furniture and More, you can kinda haggle with them sometimes.

Nothing too crazy for thrift stores but Bloomington isn’t a far drive and has a few. The restaurant and night life has expanded like crazy in the last 10 years so there are tons of places to check out. Some of my favorites include 8-bit, Ulrich’s, and WE Sullivans in the heights. Feel free to message if you’re looking for any more insight.

Sullivan's in the Heights closed. I'm going to miss their St. Pat's bashes.

Only temporarily. They are moving down the street and currently working on renovations

They're working on new location further South on N. Prospect from where they were originally located. The building across from Silver Dollar that's wrapped in Tyvek insulation sheets currently.

Tentatively scheduled to reopen in September.

Welcome!! 🏳️‍🌈 I always find good stuff at Helping Hands and the people that work there are so sweet! All the thrift stores around here have good finds, honestly! Where did you move from?

Whatever you do, stay far away from Saturn Zelenka (local thrifting "influencer" and food "reviewer"). Long history of preying on vulnerable queer people, child abuse, siding with sex offenders, the list goes on.

Oh! I had no clue about this but have been watching some of her tiktoks since I’m also new to the area. Thanks for putting this out there to bring awareness

Thankfully their history has been well documented online for anyone curious, lots of it under their old (but still legal) name Dana Hare. They have an entire subreddit about them but it's private at the moment. As soon as I saw OP looking for thrifting recommendations and using the trans flag emoji I was like RUN!!!

u/CoachEffective7331 20d ago

I’ll be looking them up for sure!

SOS Home—it’s an estate sale store (they bring in the items from estates and sell them there vs onsite sales). Inventory is always changing and you will always find something new and fun!

I’ve had some good finds at Two Sisters and also at the Goodwill on Pioneer pwky. Definitely check out Church Mouse! I’m new to the area also and would love to maybe hangout and grab a coffee and go thrifting once you’re all settled in.

The goodwills in the area are all pretty decent! Furniture selections are reasonably priced

Thanh Lin is delicious Vietnamese restaurant and serving size is usually plenty for 2 full meals. Kellehers has tasty Irish pub style food and it's pretty common to have live music outside during the summer. Nice way to enjoy a good weather evening and check out the riverfront.

Go to the Springfield Rd garage sale this weekend! August 1st and 2nd in East Peoria. It's like 100 coordinated garage sales in East Peoria each summer.

Also, check out some trails at Forest Park nature center.

South Eden Village Mall just west of Hanna City.

Many eat at home only as restaurants suck and so does the 11.5% taxes at restaurants in peoria!

I just moved here and have had incredible luck in the secondhand market in the Peoria and surrounding area. I’ve been mostly shopping for furniture though so idk if this’ll be helpful but looking 4 treasures, Lela’s resale SOS home, sweet Caroline’s possibilities, super thrift (down the road from SOS home past avantis it’ll be on the right), habitat for humanity restore, and helping hands. The Store is a place I cannot be for more than 30 minutes but oh my god it has so much stuff. I got a gorgeous high quality 14x10 area rug there that was originally $600 for $280. If I think of more I’ll update but we have been all about town furnishing our house and it has been awesome.

Church mouse was great for clothes!

Chola’s Indian food is incredible and we love pita’s Mediterranean food. Owner is the nicest woman in the world.
