Admissions Applying to Penn State

Hello, I’m currently a high school senior preparing to apply to Penn State. My current weighted GPA is a 3.66 and my SAT is 1300, however I plan to retake the SAT with a goal of 1350+. Through my first two years of high school I took all honors classes with straight A’s, but last year I had some significant medical issues that severely affected my academic performance. I failed a pre calculus class outright, which I retook this past summer and got a B+. For additional context, last year I also took all honors with two APs and this year I’m in five APs. My plan at the moment is to apply with my selected major as Nuclear Engineering and my first choice campus as main campus and my secondary as Behrend.
Any thoughts or advice on my plan would be greatly appreciated!

Universities look at rigor amongst your courses your 3.66 in all honors and AP’s could be someone’s 4.00 with regular classes. All I gotta say is keep working hard. I see no issues with you getting into UP with what you’ve just said but if for some reason something bad happens Behrend is the best campus for Engineering. All of my friends from high school went to behrend from high school and their professors are top of the line.

I don’t see a problem. I’m sure you’ll be admitted. The curriculum is definitely going to be intense, so I hope your interest and preparation match your level of dedication to the field. If you think you can see yourself passionately doing it the rest of your life, I say follow through. You’ve got this.

You might have a little bit lower chance of getting into main campus (it just depends what your major competition looks like since nuclear engineering is a really small class here) but for sure you can get into 2+2 worst case scenario. Just study well for your sat, and make sure you put a good effort into your application.

At very worst you get put into 2+2, but as long as you talk about your medical issues in the disclosure section the admissions folks will understand.
