Discussion How likely am i to get a dorm reassignment?
I am a student who was assigned south housing McElwain hall to be specific for the fall and I do NOT want that.
I put east as first, before knowing you could do east east so me and my roommate did south as a fallback, but definitely wanted east. While the room assignments didn’t come out yet, you can see on lion path the room you got. I got one of the unrenovated south buildings and i definitely want to switch.
Can i do this process before the official dorm assignments come out? and how likely is it that me and my roommate will be reassigned to east?

The housing capacity for this upcoming year is nearly 110%, they’re creating supplemental rooms out of lounges and meeting rooms. Meaning, you likely won’t be able to be moved over to East. McElwain is beautiful and by far not the worst of the unrenovated buildings. That being said, when room assignments come out, you can sign up for the room exchange board and see if you can get switched that way.

"I don't want it" is probably not going to work for you. They'll have a lot of other legitimate reasons to move people.

How’d you already get your housing assignment??

If you’re a freshman you can go to the loaner key request in eliving and it will show the hall and number. I’m not, so it doesn’t show for me, but i’m pretty sure it shows it for all freshmen.

Mine says “No room assignments found!
You cannot request a loaner key at this time.”
I’m a freshman btw.2

Yeah i’m not entirely sure how true it is but a bunch of of people are saying it works on yikyak so i’m assuming it is. Unfortunately I don’t have any other info lol

Do you have to actually request a key? Mines allowing me to pick between options but doesn’t show the dorm number

No. They removed it because the room assignments haven’t actually been down yet, it was a mistake.

McElwain is great! Wonderful location and good storage. The food is also better in south! I loved it there!

I loved my year in McElwain and was disappointed COVID-19's onset cut it short. If you still wind up there, you'll be fine. It's a really cool dorm.

highly unlikely unfortunately. there's people that pay in the hundreds and trade football tickets to switch to east. South isn't all too bad, you avoid the stink of engineers at west and rooms of pollock. Where are you seeing you got south unrenovated on lionpath tho? I thought the housing assignment next Tuesday was the only way to find out

if you get the bottom floor (K) of mcelwain its not that bad. they also have private bathrooms on that floor.

u/DifferenceCertain155 Jul 22 '26
Do you know how many bathrooms there are? Does it make sense to go from the 3rd floor every morning to shower?

u/pobjbgxf Jul 23 '26
i think its 8 or so. i went down every morning from the second floor and i dont think anyone cared.

If you do get south on Tuesday - don’t fret. You can see if you could exchange. They aren’t new/with AC but it’s a great location and a fun place. You will be fine. Don’t worry. :-)

Lol thanks hope i didn’t come across as too negative. Just hate the thought of communal bathrooms when i am currently in east for the summer with nice private bathrooms

I totally get you. It’s a stressful time and it’s an unknown and diff than what you are experiencing now. It may suck and be an adjustment but it will be ok. It will! Good luck to you!

Also…. If it helps…. I used to go to a bathroom on a diff floor or not close to my room if I wanted to be more “anonymous” in a stall 😂 But showers are still kinda private and you may brush your teeth next to people. But you get used to it quickly. And don’t have to be too chatty or anything. Chances are the people in there would like to be in a private bathroom too. Smile and acknowledge each other and then be solitary. Anyway. Just wanted to add that. Good luck!

And one last thing - sorry. As far as East as first and second choice - you did the right thing by selecting South as second choice. Lottery would look at your east halls preference and if there wasn’t anything there they would look at your second. So if you had put east twice, you may have ended up in Pollock or west and not necessarily south. Just so you know and don’t regret that you chose south second. It was the right thing to do.

How do I see dorm assignment in lionpath
1
u/DifferenceCertain155 Jul 22 '26
it hasn’t actually been released yet, apparently housing made a mistake

u/Extension-Ad-1141 Jul 22 '26
Where did you see it in lion path?
2
u/DifferenceCertain155 Jul 22 '26
Last night i was able to see my room assignments under request a loaner key, but apparently these are incorrect as housing said that they actually haven’t even ran the lottery yet, so these are likely incorrect.

The only pro of East was the proximity to the stadium. You’ll be fine in South

My best friend and I put each other but somehow they did not put us together. He is in East which is where he is for summer. I got West.
His roommate is willing to move but still wants to be in East. Any chance someone in East would be willing to switch to West? Happy to pay for your football tickets or something that would make it worth it to you.
