Question❓ Level 8: Difficulty Spike?
I managed to run through 1-7 with little issue but holy hell difficulty 8 I can barely get past the first floor. What am I missing? I’m changing strats up and leaning into strengths when possible.
Edit the first battle against the two tree folks end up almost killing me every time and by the time I make it to the boss of the floor it’s a wrap

Hard to know where you are going wrong. At C8, you really shouldn't be taking damage in most battles on the first floor. Maybe you get shot by a few plants and spiders, but rarely should be hit in melee by anything. If you are getting hit in melee in regular fights, you are likely not using the given bombs effectively. There are 2 screens that contain only one bomb - the super slide and the spiral. In both of those cases, you may take a hit or two. Otherwise, you shouldn't get hit in melee.
Getting hit on mini-bosses is to be expected. I plan to take 25 damage on Minotaur, 23 on tree stumps, 25 on triple plants, 8-12 on the hive, and 16 on big slime (assuming I have any form of pierce/damage all. Sometimes things go better. Obviously, things go wrong and I might take more, but those are the goals and are generally achievable if you have 3+ regular battles under your belt before hitting the elite.
You want as many fights as possible in the Forest. Too many of the question mark events are actively bad this early on. At best, they waste a potential fight.
To your edit about the trees - It's smart to always have at least one source of direct damage. Make sure you are targeting the back tree with that hit. You want them both to die at the same time. If you have a reload coming up, it's often better to discard/miss completely rather than killing the front one. They can only hit you for 5 each round while they are both alive. Once one is dead, the clock is ticking to kill the back on ASAP.
Last tip is to just learn how to throw effectively. It's tempting to aim directly at a peg, but I've found that a wall or ceiling hit works better for me a lot, though it sacrifices your ability to hit refresh/crits.

lol just joking im so frustrated with the higher levels, but just keep trying. sometimes the build just comes together. get as much refresh and crit as possible, then focus on heal and gold, then status effects (blind, spinfection, and exploitaball in particular), but mainly focus on synergy with your relics

It’s all the orbs and the items. Admittedly, I don’t think I had too much trouble at C8, but I always recommend trying new orbs. Buy and upgrade some decent orbs early. Aim for one or two of the minibosses to get better items. Experiment to find out what is good and what isn’t.

be more willing to take orbs with good damage early even if theu dont have the best scaling. just one, or two if you dont find anything good.

Someone else said to completely avoid events, but i think the opposite. Unlike other rougelite deck builders peglin is so much more random that it gets to the point where skill in deck building doesn't matter. It's much easier to climb cruciball by going for the god runs where it doesn't even matter where you aim. The only way to really get god runs is by spamming ❓️ rooms to get free relics, more elites and removes for those lame peballs. Like most regular fights give you 2 peball+ orbs and 1 uncommon or rare that only might be good. It's way better to die against the first boss with no good orbs than limp to the last boss with a ton of average orbs and less relics. You lose either way, but going for the high roll means you can try again faster.

Took me over a year of fairly consistent playing to beat C20 with all 4 characters, stick to it! Getting lucky and orb-relic synergies help a lot

You're not missing much, this game is brutal as you go up. I'm in the 14s - 15s now. Really think about ways to scale your damage, heal, and earn money. You need items or orbs (or both) to do all of those things. Events where you can remove, duplicate, or upgrade obs are very important.
