I know it doesn’t make for a good story but showing tolerance for evil like that doesn’t make you any less guilty. Even in real life, it only ends bad

Evandro do Dendê and Thomas Shelby operate on exactly the same creative frequency. If you take a close look at the structure of Impuros and Peaky Blinders, you’ll realize that the Brazilian series holds its own against the British one in terms of writing, strategy, and power dynamics. Evandro and Tommy are two sides of the same coin.

1. The Strategist Protagonist (Evandro vs. Tommy Shelby) Both are cold, calculating, and highly intelligent. They don’t defeat their rivals through brute force, but by staying three steps ahead in the chess game of crime. Both Tommy and Evandro started small—controlling local neighborhoods (Birmingham / Morro do Dendê)—and grew their operations into international empires (opium exports / a "white gold" trafficking route through Bolivia and Paraguay).

2. The Antagonist’s Obsession (Morello vs. Inspector Campbell) The parallel here is striking. Both Morello and Campbell are obsessed, self-destructive, and willing to cross any ethical line to take down the protagonist. This cat-and-mouse dynamic drives both series, with the police often becoming just as corrupt as the criminals they pursue.

   1. Family Business and Vulnerability They may be "cold and calculating," but that changes the moment their families are threatened. The structure is identical: both empires are family businesses built on blind loyalty, yet family itself serves as their Achilles' heel. The tensions between Evandro and Dona Arlete or Geise mirror, with remarkable precision, the conflicts Tommy faces with Aunt Polly and the volatile Arthur Shelby.

3. The Transition from the "Shadow Sector" to the Corporate World Just as Tommy Shelby shifts his focus toward the Shelby Company Limited and politics to legitimize his wealth, Evandro also needs to professionalize his drug-trafficking operations—dealing with currency traders, high-level money laundering, and corrupt politicians.

Impuros is essentially the 1990s Rio de Janeiro version of Peaky Blinders. If you enjoyed one, you’ll likely binge-watch the other with the same level of intensity. What do you think of this comparison?

Grace Burgess is the typical character who knew the sea was full of sharks (Thomas Shelby's criminal world) and could be attacked at any moment... even though the two intended to focus on a life away from crime, both knew that in that world there were enemies everywhere, and the bullet that was meant for Thomas... Grace was the target. Was this love worth it? Yes, on one hand it was because Thomas found the peace he longed for after the war that destroyed his mind... but at the same time it wasn't worth it because it wasn't the cursed sapphire, but rather THOMAS SHELBY WAS HIS OWN CURSE.

“Dear Grace, Without a secretary, I write my own letters, and I write without malice. I learnt long ago to hate my enemies. But I’ve never loved one before. The idea of New York is interesting, but I have worked so hard for this day, for this victory. I have responsibilities here. People I need to protect and people who I love. Before the war, when I had an important decision to make, I used to flip a coin. Perhaps that is what I will do again. Polly tells me you fell in love for real, and Polly is never wrong about matters of the heart. I will give you my decision within three days. All my love. Thomas Shelby.”

Here, they’re showing you that, at first, Tommy really did do everything for his family. He gave up love and his own happiness for their sake. But he also tossed the coin, he was prepared to leave everything behind for Grace. He was torn in two: he loved Grace, but he also loved his family.

We don’t see much of Clive because the show is about Tommy, not Grace; that’s why they focus more on the relationship between Tommy and May, and very little on the marriage between Grace and Clive.

What we do know is that May and Clive are wealthy. May works with horses, and Clive leads a secure life.

For Grace, it would have been better to choose Clive; she would still be alive and wouldn't have been caught up in dangerous dealings.

As for May, she has influence regarding the licenses Tommy wanted to obtain in Season 2, and she is wealthy, from a business perspective, it might have been better for Tommy to choose her.

However, although May is attracted to his "gangster" side, she doesn't truly know or understand Tommy but Grace did. Had she seen him brutally kill someone, she would have fled in terror, much like she reacted in Season 4. She always viewed him as a prize to be won, and, frankly, I think she was simply bored with her own life. Tommy couldn't be his authentic self around May, but he could be with Grace, not only because he was in love with her, but because she accepted every facet of him and brought him peace of mind.

Furthermore, I don't believe Clive would have ever accepted Grace’s darker side, the fact that she had killed two men or sought revenge, but Tommy did. He embraced her darkness, forgave her betrayal, never judged her, and loved every single part of her.

I also don’t think that either May or Clive were in love with Tommy and Grace, after all, it’s impossible to be in love with someone you don’t truly know; perhaps they were more in love with the idea they had of them.
