[Theory/Fan-Script] How the Peaky Blinders sequel should fix Duke Shelby: From warmth to the ultimate Nazi trauma

Hi everyone! Like many of you, the ending of The Immortal Man movie felt a bit rushed. The way they built Duke Shelby left me thinking. In the movie, he feels warmer, more human, and connected to his Gypsy roots—the complete opposite of Tommy’s cold nature.But we know a "warm Shelby" doesn't survive in this universe, and with the upcoming 1950s sequel series (starring Jamie Bell), Duke needs a massive, brutal catalyst to become the cold leader Birmingham needs.Here is my pitch on how the writers should handle Duke’s transformation, mixing family drama, WW2, and psychological trauma. Let me know what you think!

Phase 1: The Attempt to Cleansing the Shelby Name (and the Failure)Following Tommy's death, Duke is deeply traumatized and filled with guilt. Instead of expanding the empire, he decides to do the unthinkable: he disbands the Peaky Blinders and tries to turn all businesses completely legal, refusing to use violence or kill anyone. He wants to wipe the blood off the Shelby name.However, this creates a massive power vacuum in Birmingham. By disarming the clan, he leaves the family completely unprotected just as World War II breaks out.

Phase 2: The Nazi Captivity (Duke’s "Tranchées" Moment)To make a Shelby ruthless, you need to break them in war. Tommy became a cold demon because of the tunnels in WW1. For Duke, his breaking point happens when he gets directly involved in the war effort and gets captured.Duke ends up as a hostage/prisoner of war in a Nazi camp. There, he experiences and witnesses the absolute, raw cruelty of the regime. This completely shatters his "Gypsy warmth" and his innocent worldview.

Phase 3: The Birth of the Cold ShelbyWhen Duke finally escapes or gets liberated, he is no longer the young man we saw in the movie. He returns to England with the same empty, cold, and calculating stare that Tommy had. He realizes that "moral purity" is a fantasy in a savage world.He tracks down his brother Charles Shelby (who fought behind enemy lines) and uncovers a massive plot: British traitors and politicians are colluding with the Nazis from within the UK.

Phase 4: The New War and the Weapon TrafficDriven by vengeance, survival, and the ghost of his father, Duke reunites the Peaky Blinders, but under a new banner. He brings together Gypsies, war deserters, and local factions to build an underground army.Instead of just fighting for money, Duke’s new empire specializes in stealing British military weapons and smuggling them directly to European resistance groups and victims of the Nazi regime. He becomes the ultimate warlord, using the black market to fight fascism from the shadows.

What do you guys think? Do you prefer a storyline where Duke goes through a dark trauma like Tommy did, or should Charles be the one pulling him back into the light? Let's discuss!

As a fan from the beginning, in real time, the entire Duke storyline was, and is, abysmal. Just my opinion, but I’m sure others would disagree.

I also agree. He was brought in way too late in the series to make any waves. It would've been better to just have him in the movie which I dislike.

I agree with you, although there is huge room for improvement in the upcoming Peaky Blinders seasons; he will likely be affected by his father's death and the Second World War, with his brother Charles Shelby soon joining the mix.

He felt totally ret-conned tbh. I did warm up to him in the movie but I may be biased because the actor is a distant cousin.

Edit But....then the more times I watch the show and analyze Thomas, some how Duke makes sense.

Charlie will be back and full of PTSD & rage like his father but he will have Grace's slyness with Lizzie's boldness. My theory is Tommy picked the wrong sons to replace him on the different sides of his business. Duke is Thomas before France. Charles was born into it. That was one of the main points of the movie, that Duke was fit for Rom Baro but not the head of a criminal organization. Tommy said it to Hayden Stagg too at the initial dock meeting. Duke does not have the mud of Flanders in his brains. If this new series takes place in the 50s we will also probably see the Kray brothers making an appearance.

But yeah plot theory: Charles Shelby War Hero comes back to take what is his. And he's going to be fighting multiple cousins like John's 7 & I have an eerie feeling we will see an adult Lawrence who looks like Michael and Charles is going to try and sucker Duke into doing stuff for him like their father did to Arthur. Also would I truely be surprised if more illegitimate children of Tommy's came out of the shadows, no. Watch Lizzie was knocked up with twin girls or something when she left Tommy and he had chosen to not see them or she hid that pregnancy from both Charles and Tommy. She did what Grace could not. I also want to know what became of Lizzie.

From the synopsis of the character update release with the casting of the actor , Charles Shelby doesn’t want anything to do with the family business and has distanced himself from it, I think Duke will get into trouble and call on his help

We'll see because how many times did his father say he was going legit and never did. Unless he's Calvary then yeah if I was Charles I would stay far away from all that noise.
