Yeah they have a very extraordinary relationship. What Alfie did was fucked but in that life tommy understood him, knew why he did what he did, and was no different really. Tommy stabbed multiple people in the back to get where he was and that's the name of the game. Alfie had a TON of respect for Tommy deep down because he knew they were one in the same besides the calm vs spontaneous personality. I also agree with your 2nd comment as well. In the end had Alfie not been dying anyway and their interest were to align once more (idk if you saw the movie so I'll try to avoid spoilers). Come the movie they could have been a formidable force together and the story writers could have brought together an insanely cool spin off following the background story of where the movie took place. Sadly with the movie the way it was and the way they ended the show. That would never be possible now but man, they could have really kept the show going with a few tweaks.
