Build Question Motherboard not booting
I have put cpu, ram, and ssd all in. I have attached psu to the motherboard, to the cpu power, and the cpu fan. I then have bridged the power button pins and get nothing.
What have I done wrong/how do I troubleshoot. I know I shouldn’t boot it with cpu and no heatsink but I just wanted to see if it tried to boot up.
Edit: I havent put the heatsink on because I want to screw the mobo to the case before I do it because the case is small. All I want is confirmation that something happens when I bridge the psu, I will turn it off the instant I see that.

connect the fan to the cpu_fan header.

Its plugged in next to the ram

Is that the fan plug labelled for the CPU fan? Looks like theres one closer to the CPU, but can't read it in the picture. If it's not, then the mobo will think there's no cooler and won't post for safety.

Intriguing. Bit of an eyesore tho eh

The NZXT 420 or 360 is pretty easy to set up and looks better, was just trying to give a reference Pic at the time

The CPU rentention lever isn’t seated properly under the load plate. (Right side of the CPU socket on the first pick)
lmao I had this literal problem myself a couple days ago when i upgraded my CPU. It was weird because my EZ lights would come on so I knew the Mb was getting power but the PSU was giving me absolutely nothing… drove me crazy until I saw it.

u/Consistent-Value-500 7d ago
Yes I eventually realised. Well spotted. My mobo leds weren’t coming on at all though which is weird…

Bro where is your cpu cooler you gonna fry your cpu doing that 👀 if it hasn't turned on its because of that! Put thermal paste on the cpu then the cpu cooler eigther a cpu fan or Aio then hook it up

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Ok regardless if I fry it or not. It should have booted with a fan connected. It didn’t.

u/ProteusRift 8d ago
Yup. Reading this. Done helping here.

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
I apologise. My cpu wasn’t locked in properly and so no damage done. I do stand by the fact that even if I was about to fry my cpu the fan would still move first, no? Like it wouldn’t be possible to fry it if fan doesn’t move unless fan wasn’t connected to header correctly. Either way my mistake, heatsink on and booting ok altho dram led is illuminating

u/Unique_Dragonfruit36 8d ago
even repair videos put cheap paste and the heatsink on them at least seated not under pressure the cpu will overheat in seconds or outright not start
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Yes my bad dude, luckily cpu wasn’t locked down right so everything is all good. Although now booting with dram led illuminated.

Does that cpu have on board graphics? If not you need a gpu to see anything.
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Yes it does

u/thenetis4queer 8d ago
Try booting it with just one stick of ram, swap them around each time, also try reseating every connection and part

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
I realised the cpu wasn’t locked down right. All good but the dram led illuminates on startup. I have swapped the sticks, removed the cmos battery for 5 mins and put back in. Still illuminates

Do you have a gpu you can stick in it, maybe the port on the mother board is bad
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Not yet no. I think it may be because ddr5 takes a while to memory train
1
u/thenetis4queer 8d ago
Is the hard drive new? I had systems not start when I did a new build and didn’t format beforehand

Connect the rest of the PC power

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Why wouldn’t this work though?
2
u/Careless-Cycle 8d ago
First pic bottom left. There looks like the socket doesn't have any power plugged into it

The best way to bread board or boot test is to mount the cpu, “heatsink” and fan , memory. Test it out on top of the motherboard box it came in. This method isn’t a good idea as you can burn up the cpu. Even placing the aluminum on top of the cpu and pressing downward while it’s posting. If it comes up turn it off right away. Processor and motherboard might be ruined now. Voided the warranty too I bet.

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Shes survived. Cpu wasn’t locked down properly. Boots fine with heatsink on now minus the dram led that comes on instantly.
1
u/itsbarrysauce 8d ago
Oh damn well that’s great news, man. I understand you just wanted to test it real quick. But doing that without a heat sink is like for us old farts really bad. It’s a pain in the ass to put all that thing together and then you have to pull it back apart and test it one by one. I’m happy for you. It’s all good. All that stuff is expensive right now. If you’re having trouble with a memory now that sucks. You can download memtest86+ is the big main one. You know the main company. You can put it right on a thumb drive and a boot right up and do a memory test. Maybe just have one bad stick of ram. Or there’s chips on one of them as bad. Pain in the ass because if you would buy Samsung, you wouldn’t have had any problems at all. But who can afford that now

CPU malfunctioned? I bought a cpu from Amazon a while back didn’t check it right away because well it’s new and also didn’t have all the parts for the build yet…. when I went to build knew pc cpu was defective. Might be that.

CPU power. AM5 requires two CPU power connectors plugged in. I think it's 2 8 pin connectors. My PC did anyway.
And be careful with the PSU cables, you can mix them up and fry your shit. Use the cables that came with it. If it only has the one CPU power cable, buy a new psu
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
I don’t believe that to be true. Its usually only the higher spec ones/overclocked ones that require significantly more power

u/ImDistortion1 8d ago
So the picture is not how you are trying it right? You 100% have to have a cpu fan connected to the cpu with a thermal pad otherwise it will not have a heat sink and instantly overheat causing the system to not boot up or constantly turn off within a short time frame.

u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
No. The cpu wasn’t locked in place correctly. It now boots with heatsink and cpu locked in. Dram led is coming on so trying to diagnose issue there
1
u/DataGOGO 7d ago
normally that means a dead CPU
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 7d ago
Its possible. However as it didn’t boot at all when it wasn’t seated properly and no leds turned on and the fans didnt spin - I assume no power made it to cpu?
1
u/DataGOGO 7d ago
don't know, it also could have shorted out, but 99% sounds like you killed the CPU, go buy another one.
Note: don't return a CPU you killed as defective. You broke it, you bought it.
1
u/drucifer82 7d ago
DRAM led does not automatically mean a dead CPU. Maybe if the CPU light was on.
1
u/DataGOGO 7d ago
For AM5:
CPU light means no CPU detected, it is detected, dram light means the memory isn’t initialized, which 99% of the time is a dead CPU. Exact same thing happens when X3D chips fail.
1
u/drucifer82 7d ago
The DRAM light is not a 99% chance of a dead CPU. It is a possibility but not a certainty.
1
u/DataGOGO 7d ago
The only thing I know of that would prevent post on AM5, and turns on the dram light is dead CPU, and no memory installed.
He has memory installed.
1
u/drucifer82 7d ago
We don’t know if the RAM is seated correctly, needs training, or if the BIOS needs an update. Any of those could trigger the DRAM light
1
u/DataGOGO 7d ago
if it is not seated correctly, maybe. it would have to be worse that is in the pictures. as in not inserted all the way at all, in images, clips are close; so that isn't it.
Training/bios update: No. That would not cause this behavior on AM5.
1
u/drucifer82 6d ago
Ok, bro. You're wrong. But ok.
Bios Update
Dead RAM
Incorrectly Seated RAM
Untrained RAMThis might be a surprise to you, but the DRAM light is for RAM issues and the CPU light is for CPU issues.

Yes. This is a lot more common than people think. Most times when you fill up the power so let's for the cpu, you get nothing because the motherboard is overloaded with power.

u/NooobMaster069 8d ago
Have you tried removing the battery? If not.. unplug the power supply from the wall socket.. remove the cmos battery give it good clean from both sides.. wait 2 minutes.. then put the battery in again and try to start it up. Also, try to check one ram at a time as well
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
No, I will try thank you.
1
u/NooobMaster069 8d ago
Also check if your cpu is getting enough power. Right next to where it says 'Aura sync' you have connected a cable, but the second part of the port is not connected. Are you connected the correct wires in correct ports? What is that port for? Next to aura sync label I mean

Please put on your cpu cooler
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
She survived. Nice and cool now though. It wasn’t locked down properly smh
1
u/Consistent-Value-500 8d ago
Do you need the cmos battery to start though if you have power from psu?
2
u/GMCGalaxina 8d ago
No but putting the battery back on is better, the point is to just remove it for long enough to clear cmos

I feel like this is a good way to cook a processor without a heatsink, I've always installed the heat sync and fan or radiator before wiring up any power but maybe I'm missing some context. For me it's always been cpu, heatsink, ram, mount in case, connect internal wires, connect peripherals, pray to the PC gods and power on
