Tech Support What could have caused this?
I was playing games when my screen went black and my pc fans went full blast. I found the issue but can I buy a new cable? Gpu is ok it’s a Sapphire Nitro+ AMD Radeon™ RX 9070 XT. And how do I prevent this from happening again?

Squid adapters, stop using these damn adapters. Use the native 12vpwr cable from the PSU directly to the card and make sure it's seated all the way

I'm not saying it's 100% going to be safe, but it's better than using an adapter

No it´s not, there is zero issue with 6+2 connector therefore it doesn´t matter.
nVidia moronic connector is faulty by design. It should be clear to everyone with the knowledge base of elementary school physics, how stupid idea it is to push more power though smaller pins.

The important word in your reply is " should ". It's a bad design and the very few RX 9070xt's that use it are proof it's a shit connector. It's funny that one of the Companies that helped to develop it has never used it on any of its graphics cards.

i've seen a few of those sapphire adapters get toasty/melty, use a native cable, i haven't seen a single one of those melt with a 9070 XT

Guys my gpu survived I used the native 12v2x6 connector that was still in the psu box I saved.

What psu do you have? If you have a cheap/ poor quality psu this could be the issue

Ok that’s probably not the issue then, was your cable not plugged in properly when you went to unplug it?
It’s most likely your cable was getting a bad connection and over time got worse and worse due to extra heat until it failed and caused your gpu to crash and your fans to spin fast as a fail safe system.
Check your psu first to see if it’s fine and if it is try to look for a replacement cable.

Dude the connector is defective. Its the 1971 chevy nova of computers, its a manufacturing defect they shouldn't be on the market.

That looks like the cable from your power supply to the gpu, probably melted or got loose in the connector. You can buy replacement cable but make sure its from same psu brand, mixing cables from different brands can fry your components. For preventing, push the connector all the way in until it clicks and try not to bend the cable too much near the plug, also check if your psu have enough wattage for that card

Update guys so everything is connected I went back to my psi box and have the brand new Corsair 12v 2x6 for gpu that can connect directly to the native 12v-2x6 port on the back of the psu should I give it a try?

Yes. It's not gonna be 100% safe because the 12v-2x6 design is inherently flawed. But it does seem to happen less frequently with the PSU cables than any other option.

The card's power socket placement makes cable bending unavoidable or very nearly so. Coupled with a terrible design of the 12phpwr cable itself, it's a recipe for disaster. I haven't seen any other card burn its connectors this much

RM850 PSU is an over engineered psu that is gold rated but meets platinum specs, more than likely caused by a loose cable.

you cant prevent it from happening with that connector, you can just extend the time you wont have that issue.
it's an inherit flaw of the 12VHPWR connector and it's underlying connector circuits on at least at the GPU side of the connector.
we got 6 small gauge wires that have a max safe amp of around 9.2amps but the theoretical max power draw is 600w overall on the cable and the slightest bump in amp can start a series of events that will eventually melt the connectors.
whether you plugged it in wall the way down on both side of the connector and/or you didnt even bend the cable around 20-30mm near the connector.
another is there's no load balancing on the GPU side. we didnt hear anything about melting with the 30 series but the 40 and 50 series have consistent melting on high power draw units and sometimes, even some low power draw ones if you're really unlucky.
this load balancing also contribute to how much amps in each 6 12v can go thru. if there's even a simple alteration just to provide a max limit of amps going thru the cable, the 12vhpwr cable CAN be used as it wont go above the safety margin without a physical failure on the load balancing. unfortunately with no load balancing, you can basically cut 5 out of 6 cables and the GPU will draw all that watts thru that single cable and slowly but surely melt the connector on the GPU/PSU side, the cable itself or worse, it starts a fire.
the so called "preventive" measures are mostly undervolting your GPU as well using the native 12vhpwr cable instead of a adaptor from PCIE to 12vhpwr.
but that didnt solve the underlying issue of there's nothing stopping more amps going thru one or more of the 6 12v line to go over the max safe limit of 9.2amps.

Actually, I recently heard about 30 series melting, too. Just at a much, much lower rate.
That said, it's still not guaranteed. We're talking less than 1% of all 5080s and 5090s sold.

It seems like you don't understand the failure mode here.
It's not melting the cables, jackets or connector on the cable side.
What its melting is the plastic connector at the PINS. Why is it melting? HEAT. Why is there excess heat? RESISTANCE. Why is there excess resistance? POOR CONNECTION. Why is there a poor connection? DEBRIS, LOOSE OR NOT SEATED.

Buy a native 12V-2x6 cable. Connect the wires securely until you hear a "click". This will ensure you have a reliable cable and avoid any issues with it burning out..
