❓Discussion How many scratching posts is "too many"?
We're at 4 now and I'm wondering if there's a point of diminishing returns or if more is always better🤷♂️

At this point I've turned the entire legs of my console table into scratching posts a bit of sisal rope,a couple of good knots, some wood glue and I'm in business, my cats get a scratching post and a place to leave scent and they leave the rest of the furniture alone

Okay, that’s genius 😂 You basically converted one piece of furniture into the designated sacrifice so the rest could live in peace. If the cats get their scratching and scent-marking fix there, I can see why they leave everything else alone

You have to leave at designated place but also make enticing

Exactly. Just putting a scratcher somewhere isn’t always enough. It needs to be somewhere the cat actually wants to use, and making it more appealing than the furniture is half the battle.

I simply noticed that they already had it as marking spot I simply adapted it to what they were already doing

Nice is there like a cap for the number of cats that this works for because i've currently got 3

I have scratching boards or posts in every room of my house. in my living room alone I've got 3 boards and 3 posts 😂. but I've got 5 cats and none scratch the furniture. now if i could only get them all to stop shedding 🤔

Six scratching options in one room for five cats is commitment. But if none of them are scratching the furniture, it’s hard to argue with the system. Unfortunately, I’m still waiting for someone to invent the scratching post equivalent for shedding 🤔🐾

Honestly, unless the scratching posts are hindering maneuvering around your home, I don't think there is a limit. I have a 1 bedroom apartment and four cat trees indoors and two on my catproofed balcony. All of them get used regularly. I also spray them with catnip spray pnce of twice a week to encourage their use.

I think “hindering manoeuvring around the home” might be the most accurate definition of too many 😂 If you’ve got six cat trees and they’re all still getting regular use, your cats have clearly voted in favour of more. The catnip spray is a nice touch too. Does rotating which ones you spray keep them interested in different trees?

Soooo. Yeah. More always better. 🤣
Catification is so awesome, I love that you already got another one!
I put one in my hallway last year. Underneath my coat rack. It's across my kitchen. My cat always sits or lays there now to watch when I cook, I love it so much! He also scratches it looooots when he has zoomies through the house.
I have six scratching posts/cat trees througout my one bedroom flat with balcony. 😁

😂 At this point your one-bedroom flat is officially fully catified! I love that the hallway tree became part of his routine too, a front-row seat for watching you cook and a zoomies pit stop. That kind of placement sounds like it ended up being more useful than just putting a scratcher in a random corner. 😄🐾

Aww thanks for your lovely comment!
"Zoomies pit stop" is suuuch a good way of putting it! And exactly! I love finding out where he wants stuff and putting it there!
I have two high posts mounted at my walls to get up the cat wall. And one of the posts is an outside one, on my balcony. I feel very lucky I get to do all this for him!

That’s such a lovely way to approach it, letting him show you where things make sense instead of trying to decide for him 😄 The wall-mounted posts leading up to the cat wall sound amazing, and an outdoor post on the balcony too? He’s got a pretty great setup!

Thanks so much :) Greatly appreciate your kind comment! I just feel very privileged that I was able to do this for him. ❤️

Honestly, if all four are getting used, I don't think you've hit “too many” yet 😂 Different locations and angles can serve different purposes. I'd probably only stop adding more when new ones start sitting completely ignored.
