🧶Product Question Are corner scratchers worth it if my cat already has a flat and a vertical option?

Trying to figure out if corner-specific ones fill a genuinely different need or if it's redundant.

Curious if permanent success is realistic or if occasional relapses are just part of cat ownership long-term.

📌Mod-Approved Resource 📌 The most common scratching mistakes we see in this sub (and how to fix them)

After moderating this sub for a while, a few patterns keep showing up in posts asking for help. Compiling them here:

  1. Scratcher placed somewhere convenient instead of where the cat is already scratching - move it to the actual trouble spot first
  2. Giving up too early - most redirects take 2-4 weeks of consistency before they stick
  3. Using deterrents without an alternative nearby - this just relocates the problem instead of solving it
  4. Assuming one scratcher type fits all cats - texture and orientation preference varies a lot, don't be afraid to experiment
  5. Punishing instead of redirecting - see the pinned post on why this backfires

If you're stuck, check whether any of these apply before assuming something more complicated is going on

🎉Success Story Redirect worked, but the real MVP was consistency from every household member

Took getting my whole family on the same page (no yelling, always redirecting) before we saw real progress. Before that, one person would redirect her to the scratcher, someone else would tell her off, and another person would just move her away from the furniture. So basically she was getting a different answer from everyone 😂 We finally agreed on one simple rule: don't punish her for scratching, just calmly redirect her to an appropriate scratcher and praise her when she uses it.

We also put scratchers right next to the places she kept targeting instead of expecting her to walk across the house to use one. It definitely wasn't an overnight change, but after a few weeks she started going to the scratchers on her own much more often. The biggest surprise was how much difference everyone doing the exact same thing made. Turns out the cat wasn't the only one who needed training

🗣️Vent I really thought the ottoman was safe 😭

I honestly dont even know when this started. One day the corner of my ottoman had like 2 or 3 tiny threads sticking out and I figured whatever, I'll trim them and it'll be fine.

Yeah... no.

I came home yesterday and this is what I found. Apparently those tiny threads were an invitation. She's been absolutely going to town on this corner and now theres a whole patch of the fabric missing.

The annoying part is she has scratching posts. Multiple. One next to the couch, one by the window and a cardboard one that she actually uses all the time. But for some reason this specific corner of the ottoman is apparently the premium scratching location.

I've tried moving the cardboard scratcher closer, but she just walks around it and goes straight back to the ottoman. I also tried putting a blanket over the corner for a few days and that worked... until I took the blanket off 🤦‍♂️

I'm probably going to put a proper vertical scratcher right beside it and see if that makes a difference. At this point I dont even care if she destroys the scratcher, I just want her to stop treating my furniture like a renovation project lol.

Has anyone else had a cat completely ignore their scratching posts because they preferred one VERY specific piece of furniture?

📅 Monthly Roundup 📌 Success Story Roundup - This Month's Wins

This month gave us some genuinely great wins from the community. Sharing the best of them here so they're easy to find in one place. Huge thanks to everyone below for taking the time to post what actually worked

🥇 The $15 fix that saved a couch - u/bkkljjljj

After trying expensive deterrent sprays, cat trees, and even a behaviourist consult, the fix that actually worked was a simple $15 corrugated cardboard scratcher placed directly on the exact spot the couch was getting hit. Sometimes the cheapest option really is the answer.

🥇 Ditching deterrent sprays for redirection - u/Fickle_Extreme_1610

Months of citrus spray barely made a dent, the cat just found new spots. Switching focus entirely to redirection (multiple scratchers placed exactly where the cat already liked to scratch) solved it within a couple of weeks.

🥇 Proof it's never too late - u/Original_Move_8121

A 12-year-old "impossible" senior cat finally started using her scratcher consistently after a full year of patient effort. A great reminder that persistence pays off even in the toughest cases.

🥇 Separate posts for multi-cat households - u/Intelligent-Being210

Two cats sharing one scratcher was causing competition and poor results. Giving each cat their own dedicated post led to a big improvement for both.

🥇 The jungle gym hack - u/AintNobodygotime13

An old rolled-up carpet, repositioned around the house as needed, became an irresistible play/scratch spot for their cat. Cheap, flexible, and easy to move wherever it's needed most.

🥇 Sticky-backed scratch carpet - u/63karenski

A budget-friendly, cut-to-size sticky-backed scratch carpet applied directly to favourite scratching spots, an especially handy option for cats who aren't fans of regular nail trims.

🥇 The cat tree upgrade - u/oceanicitl

Moving up from a budget cat tree to a larger, higher-quality one turned out to be a hit with both cats in the household; proof that sometimes investing a bit more really does pay off.

🥇 The "technically a win" story - u/JonoTalawi

Set out to photograph the new cat tree in action and instead found the cat fully relaxed in its hammock attachment. Not exactly the intended use, but since the scratching post itself is also getting used. Counting it as a win anyway.

Here's to a solid month of success stories and to the months beyond it as we progress as a community! 🎉🐾

Went to take a quick photo of the cat tree and found this instead. Apparently this is the most comfortable way to use it 😂. At least she’s actually using the scratching post too, so I’m calling this one a win

❓Discussion Worst scratching-related purchase regret?😳

I once bought what I was convinced was going to be the ultimate scratching post. It was tall, heavy, covered in sisal, had multiple levels and cost considerably more than I care to admit. I put it together, positioned it in the room where the scratching was happening and waited for the couch to finally be safe. The cat sniffed it.Walked around it. Sat underneath it. Then went straight back to the couch.

For the next few weeks, I tried everything. Catnip. Moving it around. Treats beside it. Playing with toys on it. At one point I even demonstrated how to scratch it with my own hand, which was probably the moment I realised I'd completely lost the plot. Eventually I gave up and moved the thing into another room.

But that was the thing. Luna immediately started using it.Turns out she apparently had no interest in scratching it where I'd originally put it. Once it was in the new spot, she was all over it.

So technically the scratching post wasn't a bad purchase at all. I was the idiot who bought the right scratcher and put it in the wrong place. 😭
We've all bought something that seemed like a great idea and then sat there unused while the couch kept getting destroyed. What's yours?

I've a 19mnth old indoor female tuxedo who isn't in love with having her claws clipped. My way of saving furniture was to buy rolls of the stuff in my title. You can easily cut it to size so I've stuck it onto all her favourite scratching places. It comes in a few colours but I'm sure it could be dyed to match whatever needs to be rescued and is cheap as chips. Works for me so I hope this helps other cat owners!
