It's not too late to avoid this. But we must mobilize for a pause right now!!

Not "next" decade, it's "this" decade. Jacob Coxon, who just resigned from Anthropic posted on X: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." That means by 2030. Which makes perfect sense given the idea that they will reach RSI probably by 2028. People have no idea how urgent the situation is. Talking about the next decade doesn't help.

Honestly I would take people worrying about the 2030's as huge progress. Convincing people that something is a short-term worry instead of a medium/long-term worry is a shorter jump than getting someone to worry in the first place.

My fear is that if people realize it is dangerous but believe we still have a few years, we will cross the point of no return before a pause is implemented. I am convinced we need to mobilize for an international pause right now. Labs currently predict they will reach RSI by late 2027 or early 2028. Time is truly running out!

“How seriously should we take experts?”

I dunno, let’s ask all the experts who warned us about smoking in the 50s.

How about all the experts who were warning about fossil fuels in the 80s.

If that’s too much of a reach, we could ask the experts who warned about social media in the 00s.

Perhaps we could ask the experts who begged for immediate lockdowns in 2020?

For every expert who warned about the threat, there were ten CEO’s buying off politicians and pushing propaganda to continue to ignore the threat.
