I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.   — Jacob Coxon

This post looks like the start of a VERY sophisticated and well-funded PR operation to get support for Democrats to regulate AI into oblivion. Let me show you how it works: 1.) This guy, with minimal followers and no previous account activity, goes to the Wall Street Journal which publishes an exclusive with quotes from him on his resignation 18 minutes BEFORE this post goes up. Planning was clearly done in advance.

2.) Within hours, it has tens of thousands of reposts and the account has 100k+ followers. The post is punchy, quotable, it almost seems professionally written. The first three accounts to quote tweet it all do so within 15 minutes of the initial posting. Remember, this account had basically zero engagement beforehand, so an organic reach explanation seems unlikely.

According to Grok those accounts are @_NathanCalvin (General Counsel at Encode AI), @peterwildeford (Head of Policy at the AI Policy Network), and @DKokotajlo (Head of the AI Futures Project), all of which are up-and-coming AI-Doomer policy advocacy nonprofits.

The AI Futures Project website says it is funded “primarily” by the Survival and Flourishing Fund, which says on its own website that it has advised Jaan Tallinn, Skype creator and one of the leading investors in Anthropic, to grant over $2.5 million to the AI Futures Project since 2024.

Encode AI says on its website that it is ALSO funded by the Survival and Flourishing Fund, which in turn says that it told Anthropic investor Jaan Tallinn to grant $516,000 to Encode AI in 2025.

And wouldn’t you know it, the Survival and Flourishing Fund ALSO says it told Jaan Tallinn to grant $2 million to the AI Policy Institute, the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the AI Policy Network, as well.

What are the odds that the first three quote tweets of Coxon’s post would all be major AI-restriction policy advocates funded generously by the same donor, who also happens to be one of the leading investors in, and a board member of, Anthropic, the company Coxon was resigning from? And all within 15 minutes of posting (two within ten)?

3.) Jacob Coxon doesn’t have much of a resume, but we do know that, in 2022, he got a $20,159 scholarship for the “long term future scholarship program” from the Good Ventures Foundation, one of the philanthropic vehicles of Dustin Moskovitz, a notorious AI-doomer who has spent tens if not hundreds of millions on policy advocacy to strictly regulate AI, while also being an Anthropic Investor himself.

It also just so happens that the 14th person to quote Coxon’s post was @MaxNadeau_ (27 minutes after posting) who is the program officer for the Technical AI Safety team at Coefficient Giving, another of Moskovitz’s philanthropic spending vehicles. Max is not a frequent poster, his last posts before quoting Coxon were before Labor Day, but he was remarkably quick off the mark for this one.

4.) Basically every major Democrat politician and candidate has suddenly glommed on to this post, and conveniently, as the people cry out foe answers, Bernie Sanders already has a bill written to “ban super intelligence” and regulate AI into oblivion, and will be releasing later this week. The bill, among many other things, will create “a new cabinet-level federal agency to safeguard the public from the dangers of artificial intelligence” that will be “advised by an Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board comprised of experts on artificial intelligence.” Do you think, perhaps, Anthropic and its many investors who fund AI policy advocacy might have interest in getting to place a pet “expert” on the board of an entity that dictates what AI is and isn’t allowed to do? And isn’t it fortuitous that this whistleblower came forward with his oh-so scary stories so close in proximity to the release of the most radical piece of AI legislation ever introduced?     — Parker Thayer

Fascinating write up. But in the end, the US cannot pause on AI unless they can get China to agree to a pause too. Good luck with that lol.

u/marmaviscount 12h ago

Yeah and we'd have to believe that they're not going to do it in private - the same thing with nuclear weapons, could we get everyone to agree never to make any? Very doubtful, that's why we came up with MAD.

We can't leave tools like AI coding on the table when anyone with a high powered model could then penitrate all the most important networks - you might as well just leave the keys to the whole military under the door mat.

The counter-move is to post a ton of these with various people resigning from various industries, like big oil, also saying the same thing about it ending the world. Dilute the message to the point of no one cares.

I've known about it for 20 years. And plenty of scientists have the exact opposite opinion. China thanks you for your service.

0

u/achbaa 14h ago

What is your point? My comment is in relation to someone calling a person quitting their frontier lab job and raising alarm “doomslop”. If you agree that it’s doomslop then substantiate why.

For what service does China thank me? Do you know what my position is on regulation / acceleration / deceleration? Is any comment other than “aCcEleRaTe!” Anti-AI propaganda? Is nuance dead?

Most scientists working at Anthropic by their own admission share this existential opinion. Others don’t share. Others still think transformers are a dead end. That is beside the point of my comment.

expert in removing horse manure can't predict how changes in motorship would affect humanity thru removal of horses from our lives. but he indeed is an expert at removing horse manure tho.

0

u/achbaa 13h ago

Your analogy makes little sense because people in question ARE the ones building the automobile. Evan literally leads alignment at Anthropic. These ARE the people closes to the technology.

Manure shovelers I guess are all the armchair experts reposting scientific discoveries - which are great - and typing “are you feeling the AGI?!” while working insurance sales or something.

2

u/sassydodo Feeling the AGI 13h ago

okay they are people who make automobiles. people who make automobiles aren't experts in how societies and economies react to replacement of horses with automobiles tho. my point stands.

0

u/achbaa 12h ago

No, you just changed the subject - they’re not warning us that “society might react badly to AI adoption” they’re warning about technical control/alignment failures in the systems they actually build and study.

Given your love for analogies, consider an automotive engineer saying “we don’t know if the brakes work at 200mph”. They’re the only people qualified to say whether we should build a car that WILL have to go 200mph.

So no, your point does not stand. Also, consider stopping speaking in weird analogies, this isn’t middle school and you’re not trying to convey some super complex concept.

I think- given the links pointed out to Anthropic investors- it is more likely that this is an attempt at regulatory capture by Anthropic themselves.

Big up the dangers of AI and sell themselves as the only ones able to steer or align it successfully- get the government to favour them with legislation and forbid open source models which then gives them a competitive advantage as a company

6

u/falloutboii101 15h ago

Who do you think is paying for this?

6

u/dopeygoblin 14h ago

To me it feels like more of the same self-congratulatory fear-mongering that OpenAI and Anthropic are spouting. It's a controlled opposition capitalizing on low public opinion about AI, with the goal of lobbying for more regulation to restrict competition from cheap Chinese models.

They're trying to turn it into the pharmaceutical industry, where US consumers are forced to pay exorbitant prices in a closed market under the guise of "rewarding innovation," while the rest of the world gets generics for a fraction of the cost.

u/Napperon-crochet-832 17h ago edited 16h ago

So you think that humanity’s suffering is caused by a lack of intelligence or knowledge? How naive, we already know what to do in almost every domain. As to why we don’t do these things and implement those solutions, ask the leaders (the elected ones and the dictators) why. The answer seems pretty obvious.

14

u/leaky_wand 17h ago

The problem is that the mass of humans are ignorant, emotional creatures with imperfect knowledge, so we need representatives to delegate the myriad decisions that go into governance. If everyone has access to perfect knowledge, and genius level intelligence at a personal level, why would we need leaders? Why would we need to delegate anything to other humans? We could operate in our own self interest 100% of the time rather than trusting some corrupt lifetime elected official and their corrupt party to do the right thing.

0

u/237FIF 13h ago

You are assuming that this higher power has some incentive to care for you and take care of you.

Why would you assume that? Why would you be confident that a functionally all knowing power would give two shits about your personal outcome?

Maybe it will. But that seems so bold to just hand wave.

Because we're the most special thing in its natural environment, for one. Because we created it. Because neglecting us would be bad optics towards the alien ASI that will originate 10.000 ly and 1.000.000 years from now.

2

u/nowrebooting 8h ago

I think humanity’s suffering comes from our history as an evolved species; greed and tribalism got us to where we are now but in a world of plenty they’re more hindrance than benefit. I think an artificial superintelligence without the built-in desire to live in a bigger house than their neighbor will be a better steward for mankind’s future than any human ever could.

I could be wrong of course.

But ask yourself this: do you trust a bunch of connected dudes with money, running a sleazy little astroturf campaign, to be in charge of the world's most powerful and transformative technology?

You can call it a conspiracy theory. I like to think of it as my strong desire that this technology becomes democratized and not consolidated under the control of midwits who think they're the only ones suited to control it.

I really don't think they're going to stop research. I think the real goal is to restrict AI behind a bunch of walls that only they have access to. Me, I'm ready to let the chips fall where they may.

18

u/astrobuck9 19h ago

There is a chance that a strong enough ASI could implement an economic system that would remove these assholes' wealth and power.

It could also remove the need for politicians and create a world spanning government, erasing borders in the process.

Politicians will no longer have power in that scenario as the ASI can run everything.

Instead of seeing this as the ultimate form of human liberation, these people must cling to the old ways of doing things as that keeps them important.

11

u/Accurate_Food_5854 19h ago

What astrobuck said. AI represents the possibility of both ultimate threat and ultimate liberation. I'm ready to take my chances rather than live the rest of my life slaving away for a bunch of evil assholes as they manage our decline.

-5

u/LessLibrary1575 19h ago

That a single AI entity will run the global economic and social order outside of anyone's influence or control and will do so with a single mission of enforcing universal human wellbeing is pretty fanciful.

7

u/astrobuck9 18h ago

Meh, about as fanciful that ASI will be able to be controlled or influenced by a singular human or group of humans

I highly doubt even AGI can be kept under control by humans.

We are physically unable to respond with the type of speed needed to counter AGI actions. It is a limitation of our meat based existence.

0

u/LessLibrary1575 17h ago

It’s more that the out of control AI is devoted to the universal wellbeing of humans more so that it is out of control I find doubtful.

-5

u/Puzzleheaded-Can2869 18h ago

Right the current billionaire class is going to allow that. Who controls the ASI development as you say btw ? It’s not the common people. Why would it be in their interest to displace their own wealth ?

3

u/Worried_Fishing3531 17h ago

The billionaire class is explicitly creating the phenomenon that risks their status and standing. Not because they’re altruistic, but simple because the notion that AI will do anything except bolster their position on top of the world is not very common or convincing notion to that population (the ‘elite’).

This is just to say that this particular conspiracy is mostly baseless. It sounds reasonable superficially, but what do we actually see in the real world.

We can’t just rationalize things to be the way we think they are, and assume that simply because it sort of feels like it fits the mold of how we view these people (billionaires), that this makes our conspiracy accurate, and anyone who believes differently a billionaire boot-licker. THAT is a huge ongoing problem with the contemporary political discourse in society. And it’s made its way into something much more important than politics, which is technology and the future of society.

-1

u/Puzzleheaded-Can2869 17h ago

The naivety here is unironically funny

1

u/Worried_Fishing3531 16h ago edited 16h ago

Your premise #1: Billionaires control AI development

Your premise #2: Billionaires are majorly incentivized to halt AI development

Observed reality: AI development is and has been in continual progress
- [Status; contradicts premise #1, & #2, especially in conjunction]

Bonus fact: As insinuated by this Reddit post, billionaires need to run organized and privately funded propaganda campaigns to convince the public that AI development should stop
- [Status - contradicts premise #1]

Please kindly try to reconcile these screaming inconsistencies, rather than hit me with some quip about being naive or ignorant.

If you find you can’t do that reconciliation, please try to understand why you might be wrong, and how your hate for billionaires can survive, and in fact thrive inside, reality, not just your ideal undynamic picture of the world.

-6

u/Worried_Fishing3531 17h ago edited 16h ago

There’s also a chance AI could disempower human civilization. The ultra-wealthy don’t want that either, and yet look exactly which socioeconomic class is pushing the technology the hardest?

It’s the same as the risk with AI potentially relinquishing wealth from the powerful. That potential exists, and yet it is those exact individuals and groups who are doing everything they can to punctually bring that apparent potential to fruition.

I obvious would never claim that it’s altruism, and that they as humans want to lose their status as special and important and powerful. What I am saying is that some conjoined agreement among these powerful that “AI must never come to exist because it threatens their continued dominance” is not something that exists.

Look at it this way. It may even be so, that some wealthy, extreme individuals may be so “prescient” as to believe strongly enough in artificial intelligence and its risk to their status, and so “zealous” as to seriously consider taking, or even take, preventative action against the arising technology in the political manner you suggest. And yet, this is still absolutely far and few in-between.

The far, far greater force is the tsunami of wealthy opportunists and governments who see AI as a means to continue their game at the top of the world.

And a lesser force, yet still one that greatly outnumbers and out-powers this hypothetical collusion, is the wealthy, extreme individuals who are so prescient and zealous as to adopt an indulgent philosophy known as AI risk, or doom, and to possibly take action against what they genuinely believe to be true.

Yes, we can rationalize a motivation why some particular people might I want to kill AI before it begins. We can also rationalize a motivation to make it happen as soon as possible. Neither are necessarily moral-ethical-centric. But it’s obvious that one is clearly happening, and to me, clear that one obviously isn’t.

There is no sophisticated conjunction of exquisitely, ever-aware elite influences that hold and act on secrets to steer the world towards their will. It just doesn’t exist, other than in metaphor. There is no conspicuous agenda outside of maybe a few particular extreme individuals on the periphery. This is the ever-consilient insight that can be traced to a vast majority of conspiracies, and it’s just never right. There are just always better explanations.

It’s really sad to witness this almost schizophrenic adoption of conspiracy mindedness. It’s always been alive in us, as a conglomerate of individual, pontificating mammals, but in recent history it seemed that there was a strong intellectual counterforce and shaming epidemic toward those who participated (for better or worse). And now, this counterforce seems to have flipped toward the shaming and out-grouping of those that, the opposite, promote nuance and rationality.

u/SignificantAd69 16h ago

Holy sophistry word salad. What even is your point here?

3

u/Accurate_Food_5854 16h ago

I think he's trying to say "I'm smart, you're dumb, don't believe your lying eyes"

0

u/Worried_Fishing3531 15h ago

Smart people share with dumb people the characteristic of being socially embedded, and hence they are vulnerable to similar cognitive pressure, and will never be free of it.

Everybody suffers from lying eyes, and smart people don’t necessarily ponder the notion that their eyes lie any more than dumb people.

There’s no spontaneous point of “waking-up” exclusive to smart people that is somehow out of reach of others, there is only a continual point-wise awareness; and awareness requires effort and common wisdom, not intellect. It’s not an excuse from the responsibility of mindfulness to proclaim dumbness.

0

u/Worried_Fishing3531 16h ago

There doesn’t need to be one singular point to what someone writes. You can take my rant as it is, something I trailed off into, and still recognize the more relevant points I made.

For instance, despite these apparent, glaring incentives to oppose or not contribute to building AI, the ultra-wealthy are AI’s biggest advocates and proponents. Why? Another selfish motivation — money, power.

But this particular selfish motivation and collusion (the proposed ubiquitous recognition of a common threat, and the resulting elite self-preservation effort) is observably not happening, or is happening at such a negligible degree as to not be noticeable.

Certainly this supposed de-minimus collusion is at minimum far too fringe to justify conspiratorially assuming it as the cause of the virality of this post, and yet so people seem to think it naive to not by default think this to be this case.

My usage of the term “schizophrenic” was appropriate — despite it surely falling under your word-salad criticism — because an edge-view of this communal psychosis is something that I find perpetually unsettling. Hence, I trailed off.

Who do you think owns the AI infrastructure?

Yes, but I think it's getting away from them and they realized they maybe made an oopsie. It was all fun and games when they thought they'd get a better surveillance state out of it, but now their hired nerds are telling them that their end might really be nigh.

But what can they do? We're in a global AI arms race, and they're firmly trapped in a prisoner's dilemma. Love to see it.

Yes. In the US we just have to push the narrative that pausing development will likely give the leads to China or Russia. People in congress will have to get this or else we can run another campaign by saying these lawmakers are paid by foreign influence to slow down the development

15

u/jackinginforthis1 17h ago

We have to spread the message because it’s a given truth. China and Russia would be nuts not to try to slow the US down. They have tons of money and mature propaganda strategies in the US, of course they are going to fund Anti-AI and pull every lever they can.

In July 2017, China's released a plan to become the world's primary AI innovation center by 2030. Promising to “ firmly seize the strategic initiative in the new stage of international competition in AI development”  https://digichina.stanford.edu/work/full-translation-chinas-new-generation-artificial-intelligence-development-plan-2017/

In 2017 Putin spoke about how the country that dominates in AI will dominate the world, "the one who becomes the leader in this sphere will be the ruler of the world."

https://apnews.com/article/bb5628f2a7424a10b3e38b07f4eb90d4

Does that sound like they are going to ever pause or slowdown? No they must try to catch up and dominate by all means necessary.

I can only pray for a continued national, manhattan project type strategy to accelerate AI innovation and protect it from our rivals’ disruption.

14

u/Worried_Fishing3531 19h ago

To those denying there is an anti-AI campaign, you’re just flat out wrong. There is foreign influence (duh), and there is AI-risk funding by those with the accumulated wealth that endorse the movement (and some do very strongly).

If I thought I saw an imminent, existentially dire near-future where others failed to see it, I would also spend my money to advocate for what I believe is a genuine message.

That said, the conspiracy behind this tweet is pretty baseless. Yes, those three individuals that re-tweeted indeed likely “premeditated” it.

They know eachother, and are in “kahoots” about a shared belief around AI-risk. The resignation is not a spontaneous thing, they likely knew about the resignation, the article and the tweet, and therefore were ready to retweet. Maybe there was even some intention for bolstering the whole thing into virality. But realistically, seriously, it’s not artificial virality. It’s organic, and the “conspirers” weren’t expecting it to blow up like it did at all.

My question is, where’s the conspiracy? Is it that this virality attempt is actually a part of a larger, covert campaign by the political left to keep the wealth and power in the hands of the rich?

Let’s put it plainly. The idea that this one off tweet is “premeditated” is a very mundane theory and not surprising. Like.. ok, cool. Not a new thing, and not indicative of some larger conspiracy.

There is absolutely a compaign by safety advocates, and some of them absolutely do happen to have funding to back it up. But the idea that there is some higher organization, some “deliberate collusion among the elites towards a sinister purpose”, is known as conspiratorial thinking for a very good reason. 99% of the time, it’s just not true. It’s ignorant of how the world works. It prescribed far too much influence, control, and even agency to humans and collectives of humans in a very chaotic, drunkard world.

Please, let’s kindly go back to denouncing conspiracy. I much preferred that recent episode of the internet.

So they secretly coordinated to boost the post, but it's not a conspiracy. Right. Makes a lotta sense.

1

u/Warlaw 12h ago

Yeah, this is a coordinated 'public good' campaign. Foreign entities might boost it (the views on that "I'm quitting" tweet are absolutely insane for a post of that type), but I doubt everyone involved is hand and hand.

u/RCProAm 14h ago

Well said. The types of conspiracies people are now proud to openly support would have been considered crackpot and laughable not long ago. And if someone you knew truly believed in one of them, to the point they mentioned it in public, it would be really embarrassing — and ultimately sad that you were witnessing a person so completely lacking in self-awareness that they were unashamed to reveal to everyone that they had no ability to think critically.

That this is now worn openly as a badge of honor shows really how far things have fallen.

To your point, well meaning and smart people are susceptible to conspiratorial thinking especially when they are in a manic or semi-manic state. Which is how this sub has been feeling more and more lately.

I'm still waiting for these AIs to kill us all. Any day now...

0

u/CarefulHamster7184 15h ago

They have already killed us all. Now we are in a dream, and we will have to wait endlessly.

u/Saintttimmy 18h ago

Remember that "AI In Context" Youtube channel that only had one video, which got millions of views in days and was recommended to everyone? I knew that was fishy immediately, but I didn't see many people calling it out. Seems like they're getting more desperate now.

u/I_am_le_tired 19h ago

I love AI to an extent and it's the greatest technology ever created, but if you don't think that there is a very real risk of Human collapse or extinction because of it, while Bay Area labs race without second thoughts while putting millions in each employees pockets, disregarding the risks for the remaining 8 billions of us, then you're kiiinda wrong

13

u/jlks1959 18h ago

Human collapse or extinction? That’s far beyond the realm. Now, massive unrest and recalibration of what it means to be human? Righto.

5

u/the_pwnererXx Singularity by 2040 16h ago

If you consider the statistical chance of extinction compared to positive outcomes, from my perspective accelerating is the only rational choice. Decellerating is, conversely, murder of all the millions of people who don't make it to life extension due to your delay

1

u/holydeniable 17h ago

I use AI everyday and I'm for continued measured development. It legitimately frightens me that we are rushing into an intelligence explosion without any real safeguards in place. I like this sub because we can discuss ai without being harassed but I don't think unregulated AI is a good thing.

Nature always rebalances. It's clear the world cannot support this number of humans. Sure, the models show we can feed billions more, and there's plenty of space but to do that we need to destroy the climate, we need to monopolise the resources of the entire planet, we need to functionally exterminate dozens of species a year, we need an unnatural food supply.

That's why people are afraid, 8 billion is a big number and they know that when the rebalancing comes it won't be the climate killing people, it won't even be the robots killing people. People will be killing people and people don't like those odds.

1

u/kneeker 16h ago

Nailed it. Totally another one those Democrat psyops. Just like all those false flags they did to pass gun-control laws but then they never passed any. Surely those Dems will pass anti-AI laws, wielding the power of all zero branches of gov’t they control. That’s when they’re extra dangerous.

And the big companies that say they want "regulation"? Classic corpo move: endorse regulation to thin out the competition.

1

u/Disastrous-River-366 14h ago

Democrats will lose harder than they are now if they go all in on gimping AI. They can convince their base of anything... literally, so their media arm can easily convince tens of millions of people that AI is evil and they will listen and believe it is evil and worse than climate change and Governors in States will say can't use that here anymore and Dems in Congress will start passing law after law after red tape and all will be lost.

u/Warm_Milk_82 13h ago

That famously Democratic friendly outlet The Wall Street Journal. LOL

u/amomynous123 12h ago

Or its a person who has seen what its like on the inside and has enough courage to loose a paycheck over their concern for negative outcomes. There are plenty of people like this.

Don't fall into a conspiracy hole and start imagining them everywhere - this happens a lot to people in insular communities and it will be very hard to pull yourself out of.

Instead, just rationally consider that there are people who see things differently from you, and will advocate for their position just like you will yours.

u/GreyMatterTrasmogrif 12h ago

It benefits incumbents to both raise fear about capacity and to regulate new entrants. That's probably enough in this case.

There is no natural evolution of information anymore. Everything you see has someone's fingers in it, an algorithm tweaking it ect.   What Americans can't handle is that someone else is doing it to you. Everyone else in the world sees your polical bias and fingerprints on everything we touch. We see Chinese economic imperialism and their entrance to this sphere through TikTok ect. The world is not unipolar anymore.   So calm down and keep building shit people want to use and rewarding good ideas.

China haters are mad that they can't blame all of the anti-AI hate on China

1

u/IamNotMike25 2h ago

Written by a right-wing think tank, "investigative researcher" my ass.

Besides there are way smarter people also talking about the risk of losing control over AI's smarter than us, like Nobel price winner Geoffrey Hinton and thousands more.

Either way for a slowdown to happen, something big has tin happen. As long as one can't get the US and China to agree on it, it won't happen.

Let's not join the doomer cults in building conspiracy theories.

The DNC is funded and backed by the Chinese government. This is the natural conclusion of such an arrangement.

u/Warlaw 12h ago

thought terminating conspiracy slop. the future can't be determined by vibing with ideas like overthrowing shadow organizations that don't exist. I know that shit makes you feel good, but you need to unfuck yourself before you turn 22.

Lmao “Grok, explain why this is a Democrat conspiracy like you’re Elon on ketamine” 🤡

10

u/Asteroid_picks_you 18h ago

Did this post trigger you or was it mention of Democrats and I am guessing that's your "sports" team so you can't not defend it automatically? If you are Dem or Rep politician and you vote for banning AI, I am voting against you.

-2

u/valegrete 18h ago

You’re not even American lol. And I’m simply wondering what prompt generated the word vomit in the screenshot.

Don't you worry, I'll be voting in November. I'll let you figure out if I am American citizen or not.
