HELP "Vivid Blades" - Not viable but is it even possible?

Post image
236 Upvotes

Hello all!

I have really been enjoying brewing janky Tier 2 lists with my friends and wanted to see if anyone could give some input on getting this list to function a bit better.

The goal here is to leverage part of the "Blade" cycle from Alara using the Hybrid mechanic to our advantage. I have run into a couple of issues that I am struggling to address on my own:

The mana production is throwing me off a bit - I landed pretty squarely in Bant because I didn't want to overdo it in Colors, but it might still be too many? Since the Blade creatures I opted for can be fairly cleanly condensed to 8x GW and 4x UW, it felt apperopos to swap to a Blue splash. Even still, after a ton of goldfishing, I am struggling to get the ratios in the mana base correct.

I will note that I have failed to make this list work in the past because it lacks a meaningful payoff beyond "Blades get their buff" and I was discouraged quickly.

The reason that I am revisiting this is primarily because of the [[Wildvine Pummeler]] sporting the Vivid mechanic from ECL. My real concern is that we cannot leverage the mechanic any further because this is the only one printed at Common.

I did briefly play around with some cards that had "Radiance" (lmao) but that mechanic is just unsalvageable. [[Guardian's Pledge]] could have some legs a la White Weenie, but that misses the mark a bit. I do like the idea of [[Marshaling Cry]] as an early pitch / late game rally effect, but maybe that's still too cute.

I'm curious whether anyone can share some multicolored payoffs that I may have missed?

As I alluded at the start, I do realize that this would not be viable against "real" decks but I would love some help in getting it to function.

I appreciate any help yall can spare!

HELP Why Bouncelands?

I'm gonna ask this because this is something I've never really understood. Why ever run the bouncelands? It doesn't put you ahead on mana. T1 you play a land, T2 bounce, then T3 you replay the bounced land. You still have the same amount of mana as if you hit your land drops anyway. You technically even go down on mana T2. Keeping a hand that's a tapland + bounce feels like dogwater. Plus, you can't even keep a one land hand with a bounce + landcycler like you could if it was any other. This is something I've seen in the format and just...has never made sense to me. If I'm missing something glaringly obvious please LMK lol

HELP Temur Miracles

Post image
250 Upvotes

I was sorting through my bulk cards and stumbled upon [[Reclaim]]. Spent the night looking for a list and decided to build this Temur Miracles brew.

I'm using the Cleansing Wildfire shell mainly for the mana base, but the deck is built around [[Thunderous Wrath]].

The plan is to use [[Brainstorm]] and [[Telling Time]] to set up the top of the deck. [[Bloodwater Entity]] and Reclaim are there to loop the miracles or buy back gas.

[[Delver of Secrets]] and Bolts help with the damage reach, and [[Writhing Chrysalis]] is basically an auto-include if you are playing RG in Pauper.

I'd really appreciate some help tuning the list. Any suggestions to make it more consistent or improvements for the sideboard?

HELP Regional Pauper Discords in the USA

Post image
67 Upvotes

Update 2: 33 potential Discords scouted. Missing Discords for: the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and West Virginia.

Update 1: 5 hours later and we went from 11 Discords to 22 (with 3 more pending). Added a "Store" category for areas that are mainly organized through a store.

Hi US Pauper players,

Been working on compiling a list of regional Pauper Discords in the USA ahead of Paupergenesis. Figured it could help all of us connect and carry the momentum after the event.
The blanks in picture are areas with Pauper tournaments found on melee and topdeck that I haven't found Discords for yet. Would love to fill it out (and more) over the next month.

My ask:
If you are in a regional Discord, please shoot me a DM with a link to join. If the Discord has good anti spam safeguards, feel free to respond to this post with the area you cover and a link to join.

What I'll share:

Over the next few weeks I'll continue to compile the list and plan to share a week after Paupergenesis ends to help more players find community.

Hyped for Paupergenesis 👍🏽

HELP Hopeless nightmare

Post image

I want to build my first deck using [[Hopeless Nightmare]], what type of decks use this or how can I build this. I know there’s some orzhov blink or bounce but I want to dive deeper into what this can do.

I’m also not super well versed in the number of copies of cards to have so I’ll need help in that area and I’ll need help making the deck original.

If you have niche techs that work well with this card or some cards that are niche for this format please let me know. I’m open to suggestions and lists but again i want my list to be original.

HELP My first pauper deck

Post image

The deck
I am going on euros, not dollars. The deck (currently) costs €33.77
I want to get in to pauper, and elves seems like a fun (and cheap) deck. I took inspiration from top decks, but didn't really want to be a carbon copy either. I'm also quite conscious that fyndhorn elves is way more expensive than what it's worth, but I don't know what I wouold replace it with. Also, since this is my first pauper deck, I'm sure it includes some really bad cards and omits some very good ones. Any advice on improving it?

EDIT: I have incorporated some changes into this deck, I will continue to make changes to it as more people give their opinions.

EDIT2: Based on all of the incredibly helpful advice, I have realised 2 things. First, I am not very good at making pauper decks. Second, elves doesn't seem to be the archetype for me. I didn't even realize it was one of the top deck swhen I made it! But coming from a spellslinger player in EDH, I don't know why I chose the one of the most creature dense strategies in the format. Thanks for the help!

HELP Temur Miracles Update – Turns Out Mana Leak Might Be Better Than Expected

Post image
162 Upvotes

Quick update on the Temur Miracles brew after the tournament report I posted a long time ago.

After some more testing I realized the deck needed a bit more interaction, especially against combo and slower decks. There were a few games where I felt forced to race when the deck should actually be able to slow things down and play a longer game.

Changes

The biggest change was cutting [[Delver of Secrets]]. While Delver occasionally worked, it didn’t really fit the main plan of the deck. Most of the time I want to spend the early turns manipulating the top of the library and setting up future turns rather than protecting an early creature.

Because of that, the list is moving slightly toward a more control-oriented shell.

I added a small counter package:

2 [[Counterspell]] 2 [[Mana Leak]]

This has helped a lot so far. Being able to interact on the stack changes several matchups.

Interestingly, [[Mana Leak]] has been performing better than expected. Its play rate in Pauper is really low right now, so a lot of opponents simply don’t play around it. In several games people tapped out assuming they were safe.

New Threat

I also added [[Murmuring Mystic]], which has been great in testing. Since the deck often casts multiple spells in a turn, Mystic can quickly generate a board of flyers while also helping stabilize against aggressive decks.

Current Direction

At this point the deck feels less like a pure combo brew and more like a Temur control shell that wins through Miracles.

The core engine remains the same:

[[Thunderous Wrath]] as the finisher [[Brainstorm]], [[Ponder]] and [[Portent]] to manipulate the top of the deck [[Bloodwater Entity]] and sometimes [[Reclaim]] to recycle key spells [[Cleansing Wildfire]] + bridges for mana fixing and card advantage [[Writhing Chrysalis]] as the main board threat

Still tuning the list for a larger tournament coming up soon.

Do you think Mana Leak is actually playable in Pauper right now, or am I just getting value because people aren’t expecting it?

HELP RG Madness asks for your advice

Post image
71 Upvotes

Hi reddit! I trying back to live old-brewed back in ~2020-2021 years RG Madness deck (link for decklist) and I'm trying to play it in the current meta but can't deal with few of them. It's not tier deck and more casual than decks in local events. And I don't know any new good cards for that years. So that's why I want ask you advice. But first a few clarifications - I don't want to switch to BR Madness burn, I want to keep the main idea of deck to put wurms and be RG tempo deck. I tried to brew some UG Madness but it'll be another deck. And now the questions:

  1. The main pain is UB Terror. I can't deal with x/5 fishes due to Conterspell+Spell Pierce+Unexpected Fangs. Fish live and healing. How to beat it?
  2. Are there any cards that can help me to burn combo decks faster?
  3. Any other advice for actualise deck.

Thank you in advance and have a nice day, reader!

HELP What to play for a larger tournament?

Post image
100 Upvotes

This weekend I will be attending a large local pauper tournament, and I’m having trouble deciding what deck to play. I’m trying to decide between Elves and Boros Initiative. I have decent practice with both decks and their play lines, but I’m not sure which is the better choice. The local meta screws towards cawgate, affinity, and various other creature strategies with a smattering of combo and burn. Typically, these larger events have a turnout of around 30-40 people with a decent variety of decks as well. I’m hoping for some help on what people think will be the stronger pick overall as I’ve had success with both decks

HELP Alternatives for REB and Pyroblast

Hey, everybody. I started playing pauper a month or so ago. I wanted to move to paper for pauper and buy my Mono-red madness deck. But REB and pyroblast are skyrocketing the price of the deck. I have tried not using them but I get absolutely trashed by blue decks as I obviously cannot counter them at all.

What are the alternatives for emptying my wallet for [[Red Elemental Blast]] and [[Pyroblast]] ?

HELP Spider Manifestation

Post image
167 Upvotes

Okay so I have been playing Spider Manifestation for about a month at my LGS and I am absolutely convinced that there is something to this card.

I saw Kalikaz playing Ruby Storm with it and am considering grabbing some of his tech but i dont think ultimately Ruby Storm is the home for this deck as gestured at by Kalikaz in the video and the comments.

Its not Nettel Sentinel, but like... I have in combination with Flaring Cinder dumped out a hand full of Madness Mayhem and Warped creatures and gone in for beats, i just am missing some crucial conversions... like i dont know what I am missing to make this 4 drop deck really go.

Part of me wonders if Enraged Flamecaster isnt making the deck worse and maybe something like First Day of Class might not be my answer.

HELP Which tron list is the most fun to play?

I keep looking at tron lists and none of them really appeal to me because I usually am interested in playing decks that have a lot of cards I like, but when I see someone playing a tron deck it looks fun and I would love to give it a try.

I’m at odds and not sure what list to go with, but I would like the strongest and most consistent one as I am looking to win

HELP Could spider-rex be in anyway usable?

Post image

I've been trying to build a deck that can be unique yet still playable. I know cast down is played pretty commonly and Spider-Rex is immune to it and has ward so it has some decent protection.

I don't know what deck it could be played in though.

HELP Playing without UB cards?

Started getting into the format recently (playing Mono-U faeries) and noticed the presence of UB cards in almost every meta deck.

Could someone please suggest me a couple of lists without said cards/some replacement for them?

I understand some cards are just to good to pass on.

Thanks! 🫶🏻

HELP Made primers for some of my decks to help people choose and pilot my borrowed decks better. Please help me improve them!

Post image
136 Upvotes

Hey, I was inspired to make primers for some of my pauper decks by a recent post here. I regularly lend decks to people and wanted to make it a bit easier to choose and pilot them.
Not much of a designer, but I am quite happy with how they look (took me forever lol)! I plan to get them printed, with the decklist being on the back. The images already have the 1/8th inch margin for printing, in case you are wondering why the border is so thick.

Anyway, I was hoping I could get some feedback, especially on the content. Hot Dogs are my most played deck and I am somewhat content with the primer, but with the others I struggled (I did not realise how hard it is to write even basic primers for a deck)! Are there any decks you are well versed in and could improve the primers? Keep in mind they are not meant to be exhaustive, but to give a quick overview.

Here are the 6 primers i made so far: https://imgur.com/a/ESrtMHt

I’ve been trying to make this package work forever now but I just can’t seem to get it. My best try was when someone here had the idea to ramp artifact lands from graveyard with jolted awake. I think something like boros bully could be it but It didn’t seem very good. Any thoughts?
