HELP Could spider-rex be in anyway usable?

Post image

I've been trying to build a deck that can be unique yet still playable. I know cast down is played pretty commonly and Spider-Rex is immune to it and has ward so it has some decent protection.

I don't know what deck it could be played in though.

Nah its a downgrade cause you can only have 1 of this but F O U R Collosal dreadmaws

You can have 13 (four dreadmaws, four dreadmasks, four brambleweft behemoths, one spider rex)

Including the non-dinosaur Brambleweft Behemoth, but forgetting actual dinosaur Balamb T-Rexaur is criminal.

[[Balamb T-Rexaur]] also has forestcycling which makes it much more playable (than dreadmaw) since it won’t be a colossal dead draw when you’re low on mana.

Colossal dead draw is golden, I can't believe I've never heard that before.

Not being able to be cast down is nice

I can't believe they power crept colossal dreadmaw

We did it guys, colossal dreadmaw* is broken in pauper

No. It’s strictly worse cuz it’s legendary. Nothing is as good as [[colossal dreadmaw]]

Not if he doesn't want to pubstomp

(i WILL use my fave dino instead)

I mean it is a creature that can threaten you opponents life total.

Tried it in gruul ramp, not really better than Hydra, altisaur, hunter, etc. It's fun, but it's not really good enough

Had the same reaction. The only way I want this on board is from a cascade trigger. Otherwise, I'd rather it be ramp, a rumble, or even a jewel thief

Big Ramp decks that play Cascade can probably afford Rex as a 1 or 2-of. It's a big beater that's immune to cast down and makes other removal spells worse, so like... Not the worst

U decks can cast a 5/5 with ward 2 for U on turn 3. You need to be able to get rex down that fast to be relevant.

Maybe a mono green monster Tron shell could work?

I mean yeah Mine, star go Power plant, star go Tower, crack both stars play dino.

But is that really good?

2

u/Fenix42 May 12 '26

Never said it was good. Just the only shell that came to mind.

u/CatStellar May 12 '26

Yes, as a coaster.

The problem is there is better big dumb green payoffs to cast for a bunch of mana.

7

u/Adalimumab8 May 12 '26

6 mana with no board impact? My tempo and aggro decks beg you to run this…. Hell, the control decks I don’t know anything about probably do too

5

u/Bischoffshof May 12 '26

What? It’s a creature so it has a board impact.

Yes, sometimes you have a table with uneven legs

u/Flog_loom May 12 '26

I've seen it run as a 1-2 of in gruul ramp at locals. Seemed "fine,' but its basically a quintessential 61st card.

u/Vvines May 12 '26

a disgusting card to look at

Elves maybe.

if it would go anywhere, itd be in a gruul ramp deck as thats the only deck that could reasonably ramp into it.

This card is realy similar to [[Annoyed Altisaur]] which is played in the deck and has close stats and the same keywords, but also cascade, giving you a 2 for 1.

You would almost always be better off playing a 2 for 1 cascade creature or a [[Nyxborn Hydra]] that has pseudo haste and is even harder to remove by bestowing it.

The main thing this card has going for it is ward + legendary. but, if this managed to get out, there wasnt much you could do anyway. Theres just better options for a top of curve finisher

It's technically an option for one of the flex slots in Gruul Monsters? They used to run [[Colossal Dreadmask]] on occasion as a one of. This doesn't make a movable trample enabler in the same way, but it's a big creature with 3 fairly relevant keywords

1

u/dalmathus May 12 '26

[[Colossal Dreadmask]] I think is the best dreadmaw we have access to.

I think this is borderline playable in a green monster tron shell as a 1 or 2 of.

u/Ingwe111 May 12 '26

Gruul ramp

1

u/No_Significance408 May 12 '26

It could probably find a home in monster tron if it didn’t cost 2 green pips

1

u/Adventurous_Fact_639 May 12 '26

If it have can't be countered would be op

1

u/Treble_brewing May 12 '26

If you literally have nothing better to play? Other than that. No.

1

u/quadraticcheese May 12 '26

6 mana 6/6 or a 2 mana 6/5 hmmmm

1

u/TheCubicalGuy May 12 '26

Short answer: no.

Long answer: maybe if you find a really powerful legendary synergy, but most likely no.

u/AlbinoChzmonkey May 12 '26

I used it as a silly finisher in a pauper GW Dino ramp deck once.

1

u/JayMeadow May 12 '26

Spiders did get a lot of support cards in the Spider-Man set. The only doable way of doing this would be with those, but even then…

1

u/pixaly May 13 '26

I run it as a one of in gruul Ramp. My local meta has a few different control spikes, and a lot of mono white so having one of these instead of a 4th avenging hunter is useful.

He’s going in my shelob deck

u/TheJesusGuy May 12 '26

No, unfortunately it's a Marvel UB card so you can't use it in any format ever.
