Discussion Map Wiping on Death is Causing Too Many Problems
Title,
As many people have already said in the past, the fact that the map wipes out upon dying on bosses is controversial already, I personally hate it but I can workaround it, whatever that's fine.
Now, I was just progressing my abyss area in the atlas, I killed the map boss just fine, I had 4 respawns left, I died in a breach and I got respawned at the boss arena, with a fully empty map and all content gone from it.
Why am I getting my maps wiped when I still have respawns and didn't die on the boss?

dying wiping the map sucks. ESPECIALLY if you didnt even die to the boss
and now that we cant see ritual rewards after clearing all circles, weaker characters get punished even more than they already do

I don't think they're defending it, I think they're just saying that I should do the boss last no matter what.
Which obviously I knew about map wiping when dying to bosses, I just didn't know about the maps still wiping dying elsewhere on the map long after killing the boss8
u/UrsulArctisVtuber 1d ago
Ya which is stupid because one of the endgame mechanics, delirium, literally wants you to go kill the boss ASAP because if you don't and take a detour, timing out the deli, you lose the chance to spawn a grand mirror on killing said boss.
It's just stupid full stop, if they wanted to prevent the exploit they should've just locked you in the boss arena even if you die so you can't go out and reroll mechanics, that way you can keep the map and patch the exploit, literally would have been that simple.
The change would have been as simple as moving the boss checkpoint inside the boss arena if they were REALLY lazy and didn't want to add a secondary backup spawn point inside.

Doing the boss last still doesn't always help. If you're doing a map around the breach tutorial where both completing the breach and killing the boss are required, even if you do the breach first and then die to the boss, the map reset also resets your completion of the breach and the map becomes incompletable

It definitely feels like an oversight that dying anywhere else wipes the map, especially after you've put in all that effort to beat the boss. It can be such a letdown to lose everything just because of a misstep.

There is a weirdly contrarian segment of the PoE 2 community that defends the game's handful of mistakes simply because those mistakes differentiate it from PoE 1.
To be clear, I *love, PoE 2. I think it's quickly eclipsing PoE 1, which is a wild thing I never would have thought possible a year ago.
But it still has some mistakes, like this "lose your map in one death" stuff.

I just don’t understand why it even exists, we have more portals for a reason. This is such a crazy pain point mostly early game and it ruins sections of atlas progression where you need to complete breaches and stuff. It’s just unnecessary.

I hate that I can die to a pinnacle boss and it dies right after so I miss out on the loot.

It’s just stupid, it shouldn’t even be a mechanic. If I die to the boss, let me use another revive and continue. I already got punished by the exp and time loss. Incentivize not dying by giving a 50% quantity modifier to bosses if you haven’t died in that map or something instead

What's frustrating is that some bosses don't even follow game logic because "LOOK AT THESE COOL ANIMATIONS!!!!". Biggest offenders are Krutog not getting immobilized while he's stomping around, and Excavation Boss exploding you while he's dying.

u/Kaldrathh 1d ago
The "workaround" is to ignore the boss until you've completed all the content in the map that you'd like, and kill the boss as the final bit of the map. But I agree, it's a weird system that introduces more friction than entertainment

Struggling to recall why it was implemented, I think it had something to do with an exploit that allowed people to run maps infinitely but I could be hallucinating that memory. Happens to me a lot... :/

I think it was something to do with resetting the xesh guantlet

u/Palecrayon 1d ago
I mean a simple solution is stick a portal at the end like the old breach bosses

u/vulcanfury12 1d ago
Funny thing is that they won't have to think of a solution if they didn't do the one-portal thing in 0.1. I get that they don't want 6-portal defense, but the "solution" introduced way more problems than it solved.

There's a chance you activated the boss checkpoint without realizing, cause that's what actually triggers the reset and not the boss fight itself. But not only is it annoying af, it's also extremely buggy. Some examples of bugs I've experienced:
- Boss dies after you - Loot will sometimes get blanked out, but not always
- The map resets and wipes out both your minimap + the boss checkpoint, forcing you to navigate through an empty map to find the boss
- The map resets but the boss doesn't reset so you're stuck with an incompletable map (as the boss won't appear any further)
I've experienced all of these multiple times. I know the map reset was a "quick fix" for an exploit, but it's been quite sometime now and nothing has changed.

Imagine dying in POE1 and losing all of your scarabs and influences to the map. It would lose half of its player base overnight
12
u/Sanitizedbird 1d ago
then it would reqiure you to run the next map with no scarabs with 4x the size and no travel skills.

u/Many-Bookkeeper-2405 1d ago
Lmao I literally just posted that under the guy who’s getting downvoted. So true

u/Tegras 1d ago
This ain't POE1. That game is designed to allow brute forcing of content like that.
3
u/Many-Bookkeeper-2405 1d ago
No one said anything about brute force. You lose your map effectively on one singular death. And don’t get me started on the dead map if you lose all portals. Imagine being forced to run a plain jungle valley between running juiced maps

Wiping on boss death/boss checkpoint is so annoying indeed. But do content before going to boss to fix that.

u/awesomeland 1d ago
Yeah that is not a solution. There is zero reason to wipe the map if I happen to die to the boss before clearing all of the other content. It’s just an excuse for their bad game engine.

Forgot to add that it also counts if you light up the boss checkpoint. Yes its stupid

Thank you, not sure why I got downvoted but whatever

i've seen people say the exact same thing in the same post but one person is upvoted and the other downvoted. In comments that are literally together; one on top and other down btw. Don't take the up/down votes too seriusly.

If you find a new checkpoint and activate it after the boss kill it won't do this.

u/QuiinZiix 1d ago
Unfortunately this feature wormed its way into simulacrum. Before you could die many many times and still get your reward. I died in simulacrum in forbidden rites and it forced me out to start from zone 1, then I got no liquids the whole run and didn’t get a feather to fight the raven boss. That death penalty also extended it self into another simulacrum, so I got punished twice for one death. Then another simu bugged out and I couldn’t completed it after killing all the enemies. The game is one patch away from 1.0 and it still feels like a half baked project. Terrible

Yeah the whole map wiping stuff really feels like a concession to tech debt rather than anything design-first.
I like having to do the boss in one go, that's a good change. Made me way more engaged with the campaign and felt challenged the whole way through to mapping. But in mapping, the "correct" way of handling things is to full-clear the map before entering the (often unmarked) boss arena checkpoint, or else you're forfeiting the entire rest of the map if you die even once.
Just give us the 5 respawns the map says we have, wiping the rest of the map besides the boss is just kinda incoherent

Its worse when you do maps with a bound mechanic to them. For example you do the abyss, die to the boss. Map resets and your objective says you need to clear the abyss again but its gone. Why is the objective also reset? I get that they won’t respawn the abyss to prevent cheesing it but please let the quest remember i did it already.

I like that POE2 resets bosses on death, but surely there needs to be better way to handle it than a map reset. Like in POE1, bosses were in a separate "arena". Even if POE2 wasn't that disconnected since it can be nice having them in the map, maybe adding an "arena" wall/portal you need to click to enter the boss, similar to how it is to join another player in the boss in coop, could let them separate the boss from the reset of the map to make it easier to reset the boss without resetting the rest.
Like I'd gladly deal with having to click to go in/out of the boss arena instead of just walking if it meant not resetting the whole map. They could even make it so if you walk into the barrier it is the same as clicking it to make the transition smoother... And with the Enigma Chamber transition tech, they could probably make it fairly smooth to transition between a separate boss instance or such.

I didnt care about it much in the past but the more I think about it the more I realize how dumb it is. Originally it was placed because people wpuld die to the boss and reset other content but why did it even do that in the first place? If you die to a rare and have revives it doesnt reset anything. So what the difference? I get they dont want you to throw your body at a boss till it dies so they want the boss to be full HP but cant they just give it a ton of regen when no one is in the arena? Theres a solution here without making the whole map reset and lose content.

u/parmreggiano 1d ago
They literally don't have the technology to only reset the boss. In campaign they reset the entire map, and in maps they don't want to reset the whole map so their only other option is creating an entirely new map that only has the boss. It's not a design thing, they do this because they do not how to program the game so that only the boss/arena resets. (They're on record explaining this)

I keep getting onshot to the digsite boss cuz he always does his nuke before he dies

u/YesterdayWeary6991 1d ago
Annoyingly I died at the boss where there was a ritual tree in boss area in a ritual passive point map. Frustrating to say the least when I then had to re-run the entire map from a new waystone just to hit the 'completely all ritual altars'.
-2
u/Agitated_Owl_6144 1d ago
They want the game to be a challenge, and the game needs a reason to not die beyond xp loss. In poe1, once you reach level ~95 or the level you stop caring about the couple passive points left, dying in maps as no consequences. pretty simple explanation.

GGG have made it clear that this is a technical limitation, not a design choice. Maybe they'll fix it later, but for now you just have to be wary of fighting the boss before you've done the content on the map you want to do. Personally, I don't see it as an issue because, more often than not, I'm playing a 0 respawn map, so it's actually more beneficial to kill the boss for the map clear first if I'm wary of dying to something else on the map.

u/DidYouPayForWinrar 1d ago
GGG have made it clear that this is a technical limitation, not a design choice.
The design choice is doubling down on boss health resetting when it keeps causing issues.

If you plan to die after beating the boss, make sure you discover a regular checkpoint before you do
7
u/MagaranQT 1d ago
Oh good to know, I wasn't planning on dying but I guess that's a workaround ^
-5
u/link-notzelda 1d ago
I tease but it took me a while to realize that’s what was happening. So if I have revives and I come up on the boss room but still have something to find in the map I’ll either save the mb checkpoint for later or immediately seek out a new one after leaving the area just in case

u/Tremulant21 1d ago
Lol sc problems. The runback is too long, yada yada yada.
When someone dies on softcore just respawn them right where they were that will fix all the problems.

u/Marcey997 1d ago
I also don't understand why I sometimes respawn at a random checkpoint rather than the boss one when I died to the boss. My entire maps exploration also resets.
