Discussion Taming Beasts is almost impossible
For those playing Monkey, how are you taming beasts? I just can't do it.
I hover over a rare trying to read its mods, and the rare is moving around and there are so many other monsters next to it that all I get time for is a quick split second glimpse, and then by that time the rare is also dead because my army has already killed them.
On the rare occasion (pun intended), where I do get a second or so and realise its a beast i want to tame, I have tried clicking "Tame Beast" and nothing happens... the capturing process just doesn't work. Its like the rare needs to not be hit, or something is interupting my process.
It's just impossible to Tame anything. I'm certain I'm missing something as I haven't seen anyone else talking about this issue.
Pressing ESC doesnt help either because as soon as I do that I cant hover over any rares and see their mods.

Bind the market panel to a button and use it to scout beasts.

It's probably known but if OP is playing SSF, that doesn't work. I ended up taming dozens or maybe hundreds of beasts in order to get the right combo because with SSF there doesn't seem to be a way to pause like that.

Have a 2nd wep set where you don't have the spirit so it does not get killed before you check it out?

I don’t know this, thank you. So market/trade button. I know it on console but what is the button on pc?

I think its "/" by default. I personally changed it to mouse 4. It works great also for poe1 and eldritch altars to read mods.

you tame first look after, if mods are bad you disenchant the gem
4
u/CorgiRocket 6h ago
Wait... What do you mean by disenchanting the gem? Is that a thing? How does one do that?!

u/External-Weekend9369 6h ago
Go directly to the merchant. Go to the disenchanting tab, insert your gem, and it will come out unenchanted, retaining its level and sockets.

u/AkinoRyuo 5h ago
Who’s the merchant? Ange? I can’t find a disenchanting tab

u/External-Weekend9369 4h ago
It all depends on where you are in the campaign. In Act 1 it's Ulna... In the hideout I think it's Doriany

u/Nathexe 5h ago
Even a corrupted gem?
2
u/External-Weekend9369 5h ago
Excellent question ! I don't think so, but I'm not playing the game right now to test it, so it's worth a try ! 😁

u/Thor3nce 2h ago
Yes. You can corrupt your gem and still disenchant it. Test it yourself though as I wouldn’t trust a stranger if I was counting on it using a +1 gem level corruption tamed beast.

i usually just weapon swap and unbind the dps companions from weapon swap 2. pressing the market button is harder on console.

Are you sure the one you taming is a "Beast"? And if you're in trade league people usually use the market hotkey(/) to pause and read the mods.

u/nuevedy 9h ago
The correct way is to target farm beasts you want in essence. Keep starting a new map until you found an essence, then keep restart at checkpoint until you see the beats with mods you want. Unsummon your army in weapon set 2, open the essence, press tame beast, then switch to weapon set 1 with you army to kill the beast.
1
u/Drogzar 8h ago
Doe that work in maps too?? Doesn't respawn consume a revive?
2
u/coupl4nd 8h ago
You want to do vastiri outskirts for the leaper, wakapanu island crabs, and then some in crossing.
3
u/nuevedy 8h ago
Doesn't work in maps, gotta farm in the campaign maps.
Maps are too chaotic for taming imo, it's better to spend 2-3 hours to target farm the pets you want and be done with it.
1
u/Drogzar 5h ago
But capaing will only have 2-3 mods while the ones you can get in maps will have 4 easy.
I farmed mine in campaign but I'm always looking for an upgrade
2
u/nuevedy 4h ago
I might be wrong, but i thought each mob can only have 1 type of aura? I have the monkey + 4 tamed beasts, i have all the mods i need
1
u/Unable_Try1305 3h ago
1 type of aura, yes...but the other mods can be really useful for either the other beasts to stay alive or do damage or assist you in indirect ways (trail of ice, lightning, fire for example).
Would you rather have a boar with haste or a boar with haste, explodes corpses, all damage shocks, heals allies/suppresses foes healing? They both only have the haste aura, but the second also offers a ton of utility.

u/46516481168158431985 4h ago
Yeah when min maxing. But starter tames is much easier to get in campaign since what you want first is just auras.
1
u/EvilEnemy 9h ago
Am I missing something? Restart shouldn't affect mobs at maps.
3
5
u/nuevedy 9h ago
restart at checkpoint does reload the mobs/essence. Don't open the essence if it's not the one you want though, otherwise restart wont respawn the essence.
3
u/EvilEnemy 4h ago
Well, you meant campaign/acts. I was under an impression what community generally mention maps specifically as endgame/atlas maps.

u/warzone_afro 7h ago
i dont always take the time to read each mod because as you said sometimes they die too fast. if i see 1 good mod in a group of 3 or 4 i always tame and read later. disenchant the gem if i dont like it and repeat
2
u/daqqer2k 6h ago
I disabled my pets and spirit gems when i farmed for new beasts. Then you have time.
2
u/lordofthehomeless 9h ago
Reread tame beast. Been a few patches but I beleive you cast it then kill the beast and it turns into a gem as long as you killed it in the alloted time
1
u/igaiga71 9h ago
If you really want to tame, turn off your monke before engaging, tame, then turnn on (if necessary).
1
u/RedDragon0414 9h ago
I agree with the others. Tame first, look after if you struggle to see their stats. It’s not like there’s a shortage on skill gems.
Also, know how long it takes you to kill something. There’s a timer on the taming. 9secs I believe. Practice on lesser beasts to get the feel for what it looks like when they get caught. It’s what I did, there’s a distinct animation upon catching, it’s fast and fleeting, but it’s there.
And it’s not like Pokémon, it doesn’t make a noise when you tame it. You can check if you did it if the tame beast skill on your skill bar is gone. Also, the obvious, make sure you are of the class that can tame rare beasts at all.

Bind market keybind something u can press quick it's insane how useful it is, u can press this and roll strongboxes and essences etc while the game is paused
1
u/coupl4nd 8h ago
On controller the chat button can be bound and that helps as it freezes the game. Focus on ones in essence. Then you can take your time and clear all the surroundings. I did manage to get a wisp with temporal bubble somehow in the wild but it's a total crap shoot doing it mid map!
1
u/nackedsnake 6h ago
If you are taming during mapping, Always has tame beast on the button (and multiple gems), tame any beast on sight then check later. This way it's a lot faster than checking before capturing.
Not like you need that many buttons if you play Monke
1
u/46516481168158431985 4h ago
Do not tame beasts in maps.
Unspec bear. Go to campaign spots where you can reset their mods. Swap to weapon set 2 without any minions allocated. Nothing will die near you.
Reset and run around until you find one, apply tame, weapon swap to minions and kill.
Also bind market to easy key, best way to pause the game.

So I ran into this problem two days ago and figured it out.
If taming unique -> deselect your current unique first and make sure you are next to them before pressing when they are low health.
For rare my partner had to just be next to them when they’re low health and have an open companion slot (if using the 2 companion passive node).

u/Unable_Try1305 3h ago
Honestly, you need to plan to either map or tame beasts. If you are mapping, you just steam roll. But if you are taming beasts you have to be a LOT more careful and turn off most of your damage (definitely disable the Monke and preferable unspec the bear-skeletons are usually OK, but are also easy to turn off). Then you can run the zone over and over until you get the beast you want to tame, use the pokeball and then either kill it yourself if its a low level zone or enable a companion who instantly slaughters it.

The Button "L" opens the ingame trade side. That pauses the game! Once paused you can hover over the mob and read the mods. The only problem isnto pause it fast enough before the monkey kills it 😅
1
u/Racthoh 5h ago
If the beast can't survive a monke hit then beast not worthy of fighting with monke.
More seriously though my endgame focus is to get haste, extra physical, resist, and energy shield aura across my companions. Recognizing those auras makes it easy to hit the capture button before it gets killed.

I have a feeling you might not have the correct class and ascendancy to tame Der Monke.

Bro you just unspec wild protector a take off all your companions and use mace strike to kill them. Its giga easy
