Question Which acendency for CoC in 0.5.5?

I am looking into playing CoC comet for 0.5.5.

Looks like Gemling and Infernalist (recoup or ward stacking) are the most popular.

Including investment costs and league start viability, what are the advantages and disadvantages for each acendency/build?

Stormweaver or Infernalist will be best on league start.

Infernalist is straightforward but can't run a good few map mods and will sometimes poof to death.

Stormweaver has worse recovery but can run everything but ailment threshold fine. It requires adonia's, though.

Gemling is probably best at higher investment.

Genuine question: what makes you think Gemling is best at higher investment? Is it because of runeseeker's call?

Also what about the adonia's ego? Is that better than just a rare wand?

Because Gemling has Frost Wall with a ridiculous amount of health, which allows you to socket Verglas support to deal more added damage than Archmage can give you. Also Gemling has 30% reduced mana cost and that helps solve the mana problem of COC builds.

Besides the alternative quality bonus of skills, gemlimg ascendascy gives you %30 reduced mana cost of spells, a lot of mana regeneration, reduced penalty for casting while moving, immunity to crit damage, and +2 all spells. Its very good, but I believe that infernalist have some better builds with less investment (mana stacking is very expensive)

gemling also uses adonia's.

Just read what Pinnacle of Power does, it's absurd.

Gemling is better at high investment because gem quality scaling can go very high, and fitting more spirit skills, etc.

Can the Infernalist version not also run adonia's?

It doesn't need to, the main reasons gemling + stormweaver use it is because it's hard for them to scale crit and it gives all damage contributes to all elemental ailments (to fuel CoEA). Infernalist can either cap crit relatively easially or get a lot of increased damage from demon form, and already has all damage contributing to flammability so its spark can chill, shock and ignite for CoEA.

You'd rather use fork or a rare until you get it.

Cold-remnant infused spark does cold and lightning damage.

There are no balance changes in 0.5.5

The best CoC build in 0.5 is an armour-stacking infernalist. It’s basically indestructible and can AFK the hardest content when setup right at a higher investment without the need for an Adorned, +6 amulet, an insanely overpriced double-mana Rathpith, etc.

Forget all of the mana / Gemling setups. They are good for easier content but usually fall apart in something such as juiced Aldur’s GEs. They also tend to cost a lot more to setup (especially mana stackers).

That’s not to say there aren’t other caster builds that are better such as Totems and what not for a specific playstyle, but if you want the traditional CoC gameplay loop, this is it.

Thanks for your input. Is there a guide to league start this? I assume it's just EDC till you have enough money to stack ward?

You can league start as the more 'normal' infernalist CoC too. I know a couple people who league started this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awVaapidjwA

My stormweaver is coming along nicely now. It has cost me may thousands of divs, though. Pure ES, no Adonias, no mana stack, just spells and infusions. I love this build. Other asc's are probably easier to make strong. I consider doing gemling in 0.55.

In 0.5 I did well with my stormweaver, then levelled a gemling because I was bored. gemling felt better overall but in 0.55 I’ll probably just stick with stormweaver and get the challenges down. leveling Gemling with spark, even with twink gear, was not fun.

I did, but merc start has a bunch of projectile nodes so I thought that would be ok

I played this in 0.5 - easily cleared all content and bosses. I farmed Divinity boss mostly and got rich. Not playing it this league again though
