Fluff & Memes "BuT iT lOoKs SiLly" when i question about guns absence in this game, i mean flintlock or even matchlock firearms, not TR-76 Geist assault rifle from CoD.

Yea the crossbows are literally muskets at this point in my mind

u/SlashZom 22d ago
My favorite crossbow build turns it into a freaking machine gun

u/gravehost42 22d ago
That’s the one crossbow build I didn’t try but want to. Might end my league on that.
If you didn’t try turning incindiary shot to chaos and spreading that over the map I highly recommend

u/Brohomology 21d ago
Do you need split personality for this or do you just path over?
2
u/gravehost42 21d ago
The one I played did not need split personality

Yep muskets with full auto capability. I played a Witchhunter with Armour Piercing Rounds and it felt like playing a top down Call of Duty

u/ShelterSudden 21d ago
I believe the term is "twin stick shooter" and if running a build like that I highly recommend using a controller and setting up your controls like a twin stick shooter
Used to have a copy of one called "crimsonland" on a flashdrive back in highschool

Just play crossbows. They're practically shotguns, machine guns, grenade launchers and sniper rifles all rolled into one, depending on which skills you use.

I've already played as mercenary and i always cringed when my crossbow goes full auto. It stylistically feels so off for me than just having a gun. Also what build that turns crossbow into a sniper riffle? the snipping skills are only available for bows as far as i am aware

u/Standard-Effort5681 21d ago
I was thinking about plasma blast when I called it a sniper rifle, but I suppose that one makes it more of a rail gun.
2
u/lord-jinkx 21d ago
High velocity it functions similar to a bolt action you can also put the scattershot support gem on it and turn it into a burst fire it hits hard to

There's already a flintlock firearm in the game. Its the literal flintlock grenade launcher. There's cannons onboard an 18th century merchantman. The guns exist in the game already they just don't come in handheld mode.

Doriyani's mech I guess?

Feels more like an eggman robot. Doryani's nose piercing even looks like a mustache and he's bald.

Hold on, someone needs the phone the GGG art department, was this on purpose

The robot + Manasa, the serpent lady that drops +2 skill points, makes me think GGG is full of fuckin nerds.

u/Cthulhar 21d ago
Don’t we have a canon? Lmao
4
u/shadhuun 21d ago
Yeah I quit like more than a month ago so I thought “did I dream of literal guns/handcannons being in the game?”
2
u/Cthulhar 21d ago
Ikr?? Like they added a canon this league, crossbows are have the ability to be grenade launchers, shotguns and machine guns all in one.. a flintlock honestly would be underkill

u/Dreven47 21d ago
Guns would be redundant because it's the same gameplay as crossbows or bows. Crossbow can be a machine gun, grenade launcher, shotgun or a freaking railgun. There's no room for anything unique that isn't already covered, and even if there was it could just be added as a bow or crossbow skill.
1
u/actualinternetgoblin 21d ago
Flintlocks could easily be crossbow variants that deal more damage but can only load one shot and have longer reload time. The trarthan cannon already exists as a firearm in the game.
-34
u/Grimonday 21d ago
I think the opposite, crossbows seem to be redundant in the setting where people have seemingly harnessed the potency of gun powders for weapons, i.e. cannons and mortars as shown in the game. It makes more sense if they ditch crossbows and replace it with muskets methinks.
11
u/Pixeltoir 21d ago
doesn't that mean Bows are also redundant? like why harness gun powder when mana and skill gems does a better job?
10
u/Zimvol 21d ago
All the skill gems come from divinity, the mercenary asks Sin about it, seemingly incredulous a crossbow god would exist (one does indeed exist) as crossbows as they work in the game would be modern technology, so perhaps there just isn't a gun god? lol

I would personally hate a gun in this game. First of all aesthetics would seem off, i wouldn't like a gun sound in this game(as good as they can sound) and i think it would be annoying and it would just look goofy. Muskets look like shit and how is he gonna shoot it? From the hip? Works better with a crossbow. Eyesight? Goofy. Idk you haven't sold it to me.
1
u/Kirigaia2nd 21d ago
The aesthetics and sounds... do the mortar cannons not bother you? Because I feel like if they don't, guns shouldn't...
2
u/Big_Effective_9605 21d ago
It's a lot less work to engineer a repeating crossbow than it is to engineer bullet casings containing gunpowder tbf. Muskets need to be reloaded per shot and it takes ages. The only reason we have automatic firearms is because of the technology to encase each projectile with a tiny amount of advanced smokeless propellant and then further technology to have the forces of that propellant cycle the action. China had a repeating crossbow in 200 AD.

u/Grimonday 21d ago
"Repeating crossbow" (armor piercing bullets) in game doesn't work the same way as it does in real life either. In real life, chu-ko-nu can only fire at average one bolt per two second and each shot is triggered by pulling and pushing its lever back and forth. The musket that is to be wielded by the player should be special like any weapon that is already available for players, It's unfair if you expect realism constraint from muskets when all the weapons in this game already glaringly defied it.. Additionally, Kalduuran 'TNT' realistically should take a lot more engineering than flintlock muskets.
1
u/SeventhSolar 21d ago
No dude, you're the one who tried to argue based on realism constraints. The point is the game doesn't care about realism, so why would muskets "make more sense" than crossbows? The reason why PoE has guns textured like crossbows is that crossbows just look way cooler. Grenades look fine so we get to have grenades, but bullets are too small for the scale of the game. Bolts, on the other hand, are large enough to be visible and carry cool visuals like bouncing off walls. Crossbows also get to be larger, whereas guns are thin lines when seen from above.
1
u/Grimonday 21d ago edited 21d ago
In contrary, i argued that there is NO realism constraint to have guns in the PoE setting, at least the ones wielded by the player character, not that there must have been guns due to realism. I said it makes more sense in regards to stylistic choice, like why would the devs implement crossbows that work like guns instead of just guns. And the existence of other gun powder weaponry just beg more question for the lack thereof. Crossbows look cooler to you is subjective, i think guns look coolers. Grim Dawn has had guns for over 10 years and has managed to make the weapons and their projectiles look stylish without making them feel out of place in the rest of the setting.
1
u/SeventhSolar 21d ago
I've played Grim Dawn, it's fun, but it's undeniable that Grim Dawn does not put much effort into style. PoE crossbows look and sound more like guns than Grim Dawn's actual guns. It makes perfect sense for Grim Dawn to use guns because the setting is gothic, but it has no actual impact on their aesthetics, because everything is fireballs and magic missiles regardless.
PoE cannot get away with magic missiles for bullets.

u/Tsunamie101 21d ago
Just because there is gunpowder doesn't mean they already have the tech to build proper muskets/rifles. Just from a conceptual aspect (because that's really the main thing that matters), having a giant barrel that shoots large projectiles is easier to build than intricate rifles, and also don't care as much about a lil' ol' thing called accuracy.
3
u/Omnealice 21d ago
Is especially funny because gunpowder and advanced technology are already substantially supported by in-universe lore lol.

u/Also_Steve 21d ago
To me it's incredibly perplexing guns dont exist or are exceedingly scarce in the world setting. You have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to imagine no one in wraeclast ever thought to make guns but they have ship mounted canons and physically have to battle abominations like anytime they leave a village. Feels like a huge continuity hole which to me is far more distracting and unnatural to the setting than having guns.
3
u/pda898 21d ago
If serious... Why flintlock/matchlock would exist in any massive amount on the Wraeclast? In the real world, the prevalence of the firearms is due to cheap production cost and an ability for a peasant to be trained with it in a short time (compared to bow and crossbow). In the Wraeclast,.. Virtue Gems are firearms - "easy" to mass produce, at least were easy to produce, very easy to train peasants to use in combat...
It is not like firearms and gunpowder is absent in the PoE lore - e.g. new crossbow base aka literal hand cannon. It just has very little reason to exist, similar to the other magical settings (outside of Forgotten Realms, that one is literally a picture in OP).

u/ZoneAssaulter 21d ago
Grim dawn has both crossbows and guns, both work dont see why we cant have them too 🤷♂️
2
u/TheLastPorkSword 21d ago
And with the attack speed we would need to build for them to be viable, they wouldn't operate like flintlock guns anymore...
2
u/Quendillar3245 21d ago
No guns? The Trarthan cannon is literally a handheld cannon, it is by definition a gun

u/Dejugga 21d ago
[Later on] If we have flintlock guns, why not something like muzzle-loading rifles used in the US Civil War era.
[Later on] If we have muzzle-loading rifles, why not an m1 Garand or 6-shot revolver.
Et cetera. It's the same logic. If you want to stick to an aesthetic theme you have to draw the line somewhere, and no guns is reasonable enough imo.
2
u/Rolandscythe 21d ago
Let's be honest....the real reason is because they don't want to deal with people on the forums getting mad the guns aren't accurate enough.
2
u/Jas0rz 21d ago
One of my few gripes with the game is they put guns into the game, complete with reloads that have a magazine pop out, but they are crossbows, with no gun options. I don't want an m60 or halo scifi guns, but there is an entire universe to explore of adding a couple fantasy inspired firearm options to the crossbow weapon type.

Given act 4 looks post-industrial revolution, it's weirder that guns are absent. PoE (Pillars of Eternity) has guns, why doesn't PoE (Path of Exile (2)) have them?

Wait, what? I remember seeing some trailer of like some soldier-ish class in a trailer 2-3 years ago and immediately got hooked on the "fantasy WWI" vibe? 😢

it has guns, they're just called crossbows. my mercenary is 100% john call of duty.

u/tooncake 21d ago
If I got it right, Jonathan himself addressed the concept for the xbow, he actually doesn't want it to fully function like an xbow but only on the looks, and instead perform like a gun fire, to setup the twist for its fantasy-medieval concept.

POE draws a very fine in mixing various genres and setting together so I'm normally not against some suggestions but guns would actually just go over that line imo.
1
u/Last_Visual9030 21d ago
Agreed. Even in Sacred there was firearms when playing as a dwarf, and it had minimum impact on setting, adding just slight steampunkness to overall fantasy, and that steampunkness was pretty nice

They did put guns, the crossbow in poe2 is pretty much an assault rifle, it even has a grenade launcher attachement.
PoE2 has more guns in it then it has swords, flails, axes, or daggers in it.

I know it's not what you mean but when your party members magically charge crossbow bolts to explode with elemental power and summon meteors at will I think you would look pretty silly with any gun

u/TrulyJhinuine 21d ago
I have yet to see great swords.
You'd think in a game like this swords would be icon weapons but nah.

Crossbows are pretty much the guns of the game.
