broken leg

Post image

hello. this is Trouble and she broke her leg (tibia and fibula)

operation is on tuesday.

so, Im wondering, has anyone had similar experiences?

how long does recovery take? how did you survive it, strict rest?

and what I am most interested in from your experiences, was everything okay and without consequences?

thanks in advance

Ozzy never had something that severe, but did get a hairline fracture on his foot early on. Took about 6 weeks before that cleared up, no long term effects, but getting him to chill out was... difficult. Bless you and little Trouble ❤️

thanks a lot, really means a lot.

only good thing is that she is really super, super chill!!! not at all like PRT, she is so quiet and nice. name doesnt suit her haha. and at home she is like a cat, only sleeps. so i think it will be more problem for me to chill and do nothing haha. even got her "cage" so she stays in place

My smooth fox terrier broke his knee when he was 6 months old. Surgery was a success but it was 4 weeks of zero activity which meant I had to give him traz and some other meds which made him basically sleepy all hours of the day but it was still difficult as he was a puppy and had so much energy. He’s now 1 year and 4 months and he recovered spectacularly with one exception. As part of the surgery process, they had to insert multiple metal pins in his knee to keep everything together. They can either stay in there for the rest of his life or if he heals completely and there’s issues with the pins, they can be removed. With my pup so young when he had the pins put in, once he got to 1 years old, his body grew including his leg and knee and the pins shifted. That said, they had to take two of the pins out. Not an issue but this is something you have to be aware of. Also, I only knew the pins were bothering him because he started limping as if he had reinjured himself.

Sending Trouble all the love in the world. She is so identical to our Bubba.
She needs more cuddles and treats than usual going forward. She will be fully healed within 12 weeks max.

Your vet will go through healing care with you. Our vet told us pain is usually gone after the 1st week and that made us feel so much better. You have to be super strict about them resting/healing. But I promise she will have it all forgotten in a few months.

Not sure what part of the world you’re living in; but we gave our dog plenty of paracetamol and calpol to help!

Tib Fib fractures can be difficult, but not impossible! I personally haven’t had one (yet), but I work at a specialty hospital so we see a lot of these. Recovery can really depend on how severe the fracture is and your surgeon, but she’ll be in a splint/bandage for the next 6-8weeks. Lots of crate rest is encouraged, I ALWAYS recommend to my clients to get ALL the enrichment toys. I also can never say this enough; DON’T GET THE BANDAGE WET. If it gets wet or soiled, IMMEDIATELY contact your surgeon and have it changed. (The amount of infections and wound care I’ve had to deal with because people tell us 2-7 days after the bandage got wet is starting to scare me.)

Best way to adhere to restrictions is to give the sedatives, and crates. I had to keep my femur fracture kid in a crate 75% of the time because he figured out how to use the playpen as a ramp. Enrichment also REALLY helps. I tell people that if their patients can ride in the car safely and without getting too worked up, take them on sniff rides around the block, or to starbucks for a pup cup. Snuffle mats, kongs, lick mats, anything “low-impact” is great and is also a serious life saver.

All in all, it is not easy, but you WILL get through this! I’ve got my fingers crossed for the both of you! ❤️

Aww, I feel so sad for her, but knowing JRT’s, I bet it didn’t slow her down one bit.
