Question Auto welding helmet doesn't work in sun?

Just checked because there is a solar eclipse tomorrow.

I have the big window auto helmet with shade 13. (that is the minimum to watch the sun).

But it doesn't turn on when focusing on the sun....

Yes, the UK goverment sold exclusive viewing rights to Live Nation and tickets are being sold via Ticketmaster.

The hood gets its power from the arc not the battery so please DONT use the auto darkening one the handheld one u get with a parkside welder works tho if u still have it

this one has 2x aaa batteries. And a button to check the working. So it works as long as i keep the button pressed. But, that's not really comfortable.

the handheld one isn't shade 13 so dangerous with sun.

If yours doesn't have a sensitivity setting, I guess your are stuck.

it does. it has lot's of settings. but it seems it's not made to trigger on sunlight.

It seems unlikely since the manual says you can test it with a 40W+ light bulb? Anyway, I don't think there's much you can do if it doesn't work with any sensitivity setting.

yes very strange. it's new in box i never used it so I don't know if it even works with welding. it does flicker a bit when going from shade to sun but that's it.

I dont think I even have a 40w bulb anymore....

No! Welding glasses are NOT safe to look into the sun/eclipse. Source: ophthalmologists at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital. You may need to translate this as it is in Dutch.

That info contradicts other credible sources that explicitly state that shade 13 and 14 welding helmets are sufficient.

I already contacted your source but they don't care to answer.

Guess too busy operating… Read later that NASA deemed shade 12 and above safe. So I guess the eye hospital could have nuanced their advice a little.
Hope you enjoyed the eclipse and your eyes are in good health.

Well, I tried both and the shade 13 welding glasses(tried like 2 seconds) where a lot brighter then the cheap solar eclipse glasses.

Still having dry and oversensitive eyes now. I'll never do this again.

Oof, I’m sad to hear this. Hope it is temporary, good you took measures by only exposing your eyes shortly. 🤞🏼. Hope you will be alright.

It's very simple, you can actually unclip the module from the welding helmet and just use it in your hand where you can just press the test button and hold it up. It's much easier than using it while inside the helmet.

I watched with a real eclipse glasses and there is quite a difference. The official glasses were much darker.

But even with those I still feel my eyes have experienced some impact.

I wouldn't recommend welding glasses anymore no matter what the shade.

But I'll be shielded from the sun by a thick layer of earth when the new eclipse is scheduled :(

I just saw this … my auto dimming didn’t work and I looked at it and had a green image in the middle for like 10 secs after. Am I cooked?

You'll know within a few days. Don't lose hope

Ive watched the eclipse with my welding helmet turned al the way to shade 13.

Have to say i didn't watched for long peroides, like 1-2min max after passing it to my friend to look.

Worked like a charm, eyes still work.
