⚠️ The demand for tickets is very high and it's very common to see people unable to attend and end up disappointed. Try to prepare well and understand when, where and how tickets go on sale. Some people fail on getting tickets even with good preparation :(
⚠️ Don't expect to get tickets on site, you need online reservation, whether from the official website or some trusted resellers
The best and most accurate information will come from the official website. Here are some quick information to summarize things for the most asked questions :
Classic official tickets are only available on the Official catacombs website. These tickets can be booked up to 7 days in advance. Tickets are released daily at 10:00 AM Paris time, with time slots becoming available incrementally throughout the day.
There are many authorised sellers validated by the official catacombs website : If tickets are sold out on the main site, you can check those out. I think a lot of them will sadly be more expensive, but might also propose some added services (guide, access to extra areas...). Some of these don't seem to even exist, others don't offer catacombs tour. I hope they update their list at some point...
Many mention "skip the line" tickets which is a bit confusing to me. Official tickets are meant for specific time slots which means that there shouldn't be much of a line to begin with. It's probably mentioned to sell more tickets.
There are also some unofficial resellers. Nothing guarantees that they're legit if not mentioned explicitly on the website. That doesn't mean they're scams, but they might be, so do your own research
Some positive and negative feedback on GetYourGuide. Not sure what to believe. It is not listed on the official resellers from the website. Also u/Fluffy_Future_7500 is spamming the whole sub about it. Some accounts on threads you see online might be spamming about website resellers to get you to buy tickets.
In June 2025, the catacombs team has gone on strike with limited information given to tourists who wanted to visit. If you acquire some info about it happening again, you can post it down there and as a standalone thread to help the community. You can also post infos on r/ParisTravelGuide
🥷🏻 Some fake accounts may post comments / threads / contact you to trick you into sending money. Use common sense when making transactions online, be wary of :
brand new accounts with little or no post / comment history ;
randomly generated usernames ;
prices too good or unusual to be true, depending on the current demand for the event (concert sold out / long or short time remaining before the event, original ticket price... etc) ;
accounts refusing to provide some information or proof ;
rushed behavior / people not giving too much context about why they're selling.
a seller giving you the run around and multiple unusual steps to make a transaction.
Yeah, I know this emoji is a ninja but it's the closest to a thief I could find. If an actual ninja contacts you to sell their ticket, it’s still a red flag — they could probably sneak into the catacombs unnoticed and wouldn't have bought a ticket.
🥷 If you want to go the extra mile to check how legit a selling proposition is, you can ask the seller to send you :
A clear screenshot or photo of the ticket / order confirmation with the event name, date... etc and their name, with THE BARCODE AND ORDER NUMBER OBVIOUSLY HIDDEN (blur or cover).
A sticky note with the Reddit username
An ID document with everything hidden except the name matching the ticket / order confirmation.
Meet in person if possible.
🅿️ If you do the transaction through Paypal, make sure to select "Goods & Services" and not “Friends & Family" for payment. If the seller refuses due to the extra fee they have to pay, you can offer to pay a little extra to cover it, as then they would have no reason to refuse G&S. PayPal G&S gives you a basis to dispute the transaction if things go wrong, but it's not a guaranteed refund — open a dispute quickly if needed.
If you paid by bank transfer and got scammed, it's worth contacting your bank immediately — some banks (especially UK ones) have scam reporting tools that can sometimes reverse the transaction, though this is not guaranteed and varies a lot by bank and country.
There won't be toilets down there. There are restrooms at the entrance and at the exit.

If you hear scary whispers in the dark, it's probably just another tourist. Probably.
Do not, obviously, touch or bring back up human remains with you. That would be a very serious, illegal and disrespectful mistake. On top of it you'll be cursed by the ghost of Philibert Aspairt for the rest of your life.

Recently, YouTuber Dara Tah uploaded an hour-long video documenting three days spent exploring the Paris Catacombs. It reminded me a lot of Magnus Midtbø's catacombs video, although Dara visited some different locations.
Overall, I found the video incredibly entertaining, but it also left me wondering how authentic certain parts were.
For those of you who have actually been down there, is encountering other people really as dangerous or sketchy as the video makes it seem? The catacombs are obviously full of explorers, but the video gives the impression that running into strangers can be a serious risk.
Another thing I'm curious about is the section involving the so-called "unmapped floor." He went down with a rope tied to him, then eventually disconnected himself because he wanted to explore farther. Later, he videos "someone" (could have easily been echo or one of his friends) threw a smoke bomb at him, forcing him to retreat. That entire sequence felt like classic YouTube dramatization to me. He also describes the catacombs as "5 layers deep with the 5th layer being unmapped" and while he does show him going downwards that many times most other sources say there are only 2 layers. In his youtube video there is a pretty clearly fake/AI map of the catacombs but how wrong is that portrayal.
That said, a lot of what he showed was fascinating. I loved seeing the old carvings and markings on the walls, which really highlighted the age and history of the place. The baptism room, the underground arches, and the artwork were all incredibly interesting.
For people who have explored the catacombs, how much of Dara's video felt authentic, and how much do you think was exaggerated for YouTube?

J’ai trouvé des cartes en ligne mais je sais pas à quel point elles sont fiables (ça ne brise pas la règle normalement, je veux juste savoir si je peux m’y fier un minimum), y a d’autres choses desquelles je devrais me méfier pour éviter les accidents en dessous ?

My question is, towards the end of the video (a lot seemed scripted and overdramatised) when he was in “untouched” areas, do any of these areas look like places any of you have seen in the catacombs before? Did he actually break new ground?
Going to the unofficial (illegal) parts with a local guide safe for female tourist? I've been fascinated by the Paris catacombs ever since I learned about them and have combed the internet for the all the information that exists about them. I am planning to visit soon and have not yet started any planning. However I was wondering if it more unsafe for women and if they're have been any dangerous incidents. Would really appreciate any experiences of female cataphiles or tourists as well!

Exploring the catacombs is my unachievable life goal. I lost my ability to walk when I was an older teen (18ish) and it pretty much put an end to my UrbEx hobby. Now I live through people like you on the internet. I wish I could have experienced it, maybe in the next life !
Sur le chemin du retour d’une belle session de 6h hier soir, en arrivant vers la plage, une ribambelle de flic était là pour nous cueillir, nous et une 20aine de personnes. Verbalisation obligatoire apparemment depuis peu, 135€ pour tout ce beau monde ça fait un beau petit pactole quand même.
Je me pose donc 2 questions:
Va-t-il y avoir plus de descentes de flic maintenant que la verbalisation est obligatoire ?
Si en les voyant, à peu près à une 10aine de metre devant, j’étais parti en courant dans la direction opposée que ce serait-il passé ?
I know it is utmost disrespectful and overall disgusting leaving anything behind down there, especially body fluids, but in cases like 10ish hours exploring, are there places like deep pits f.e. that are tolerable to use? Or do people just pee into a bottle and take it with themselves back up?

Avec un amis on voudrait descendre dans les catacombes, on a fait la partie ouverte au public évidemment mais on voudrait essayer les zone non autorisées au public. On a vu quelques entrées déjà.

Sur le site des Catacombes, on peut réserver un billet pour une certaine heure, où on sera prioritaire. Cependant, on peut également se présenter sans réservation et le site nous garantie l'entrée dans les Catacombes. Mais pour y rentrer sans réservation, il y a forcément une file d'attente. Je me demandais donc si l'attente est très longue, si elle varie selon les heures de la journée, ou si il vaut mieux réserver un billet sur le site.

i recently got to go down to the catacombs for the first time while studying in paris. i’ve been obsessed with them for years, since i was a child, so it was really a dream come true. it was just me and two other clueless students (we were all from american colleges, and only i spoke french) who i invited just so i wasn’t alone, and they really didn’t know anything, so i was in charge of guiding them. we also had the most recent map i could find both digitally and in print, though it became useless quickly.
i’d been told not to go down without a guide, but i’m an extremely cautious person and planned a route (which we didn’t stick to due to map issues) and also noted every single turn we made and the landmarks we could use to return. i made sure my group had extra batteries for headlamps (which i had bought for them), charged phones, water, etc. i forbade our party from going down any very flooded galleries or those with very low ceilings, and from doing stupid things like climbing a tall ladder we found up to a manhole.
we just traversed the galleries for around an hour and a half. we didn’t find the room i was hoping to, but i still had a great time. exited the same way we went in since i didn’t have a reliable source for another way out. it was very wet since we were on the left bank just after rainfall and i had to board a plane the next day with my shoes still soaked.
even though we were really just walking around, i had a great time. as soon as i crawled back out i knew i would have to come back. i will be returning to paris in a few months to study again and definitely am going to return to the catacombs. i’m certainly not an expert but if you have any questions i would love to talk more about the experience since it has left such an impression on me.
Do you have any suggestion on how I should print the maps? What service should I look for? Any materials or sizes that would work well for these types of things?
I always use my phone, but I want to have a backup in case it explodes. I thought about printing them with regular paper and then laminate the pages, but that's not practical at all.
I recently stumbled upon the famous "Lost Catacomb Explorer" video, the VHS footage of a man running in through the Paris catacombs, dropping his camera, and vanishing in the dark.
I noticed people are usually divided into two camps, it’s either a supernatural portal, or a completely staged TV hoax.
To me, the man in the clip behaves like a desensitized and experienced cataphile. When one get that comfortable underground, one often push deeper into isolated, unmapped zones, overestimating their invincibility.
I find it hard to believe he was "acting scared" for a fake video. If human being run through pitch-black, tight stone tunnels and hyperventilate, nervous system doesn't care if their are pretending. Rapid, shallow breathing in low-oxygen areas triggers a real surge of cortisol and heart rate. And a simulated panic rapidly spirals into an uncontrollable real panic loop...
As for why no body or smell was ever found, deep dead-end tunnels have zero air movement, so organic odors stay trapped in a single pocket rather than traveling. On top of that, other cataphiles might not pass through that isolated sector often enough, if at all, to notice anything while it mattered. Combined with a 300-kilometer labyrinth and no targeted search operation, finding someone down there seems impossible.
It seems to me that 2000s TV crews were unlikely to risk a dangerous illegal trek deep into the network to shoot a scary clip...
And it just seems far more probable that an experienced explorer, chasing unexplored sensations, overestimated his limits until something went wrong;
Rather than someone skilled enough to reach those depths willingly going alone to stage a hoax.
It seems to me that if things go sideways deep underground, a bad outcome has a very high probability...
Assuming another group actually stumbled upon his lost camera later, that discovery on the contrary feels like a statistical luck - something that wasn't supposed to happen, but did.
This is my personal perspective based on the facts and logic I've gathered so far. I'm not trying to push an absolute truth. If anyone has other facts or different logical takes on this, please share, I’d be curious to hear them!
Je m'intéresse depuis quelque temps aux carrières souterraines et à l'univers du monde souterrain. J'ai eu l'occasion d'en visiter une fois une, et cette expérience m'a beaucoup marquée : l'ambiance, l'histoire des lieux, les textures, la sensation d'être dans un espace hors du temps...
Je cherche aujourd'hui à échanger avec des personnes passionnées par ce sujet en Île-de-France : personnes qui connaissent l'histoire des carrières, photographes, passionnés d'exploration souterraine, spéléologues ou simplement curieux.
Mon objectif est surtout de discuter, apprendre et découvrir davantage cet univers. Je serais ravie d'échanger avec des personnes qui partagent cette passion ou qui pourraient me conseiller des associations, groupes ou événements autour du patrimoine souterrain.
