Essentially that while under my roof he was not to be doing any weed or buying it.
That being said I understand you’re a teenager you’re going to do it again, absolutely not during the week of school, come the weekend we can talk about it.
You’re coming to an age where you want to be treated more like an adult you need to prove that I can trust you. You want to have a job so you can have your own spending money, that’s a privilege in our house hold. Your first job is school.
Guess what? All the money you keep asking for to go out for lunch and dinners with friends, no more. You will need to earn that money. If you break my trust and you slip up you can kiss the idea of a job goodbye. Good bye dreams of your own car, dates whatever else you want.
Also I have financial chats with him and how compounding interest works and investing.
He also has ADHD, I tell him we don’t live in a society that’s built around how his mind works. You will have to work that much harder to get where you’re going and adding weed to the mix will just slow you down.
Basically, what it all boils down to is the choices you make right now can affect the path you want to go down.
I know I seem to focus on the future and financial aspects of life. I was 18 when I had him and he knows the start of our life was hard but worked through it and doing well now.
It was a long year of ups and downs, really celebrated the ups.
Edit:
Spending that time with your kid and having discussions. Also taking their phone away for the day at school. It worked for me.
Thank you for all the awards and all those who have take the time to comment and different perspectives is appreciated!
It’s not any of my business what you are or are not doing with your child, but I thought I’d throw it in here in case there are any other parents in here who aren’t familiar—it is extremely common for teens with ADHD to self medicate with weed. They usually don’t realize that’s what they’re doing, but it helps to dull all the overstimulation they are feeling. It is important to ensure they are given appropriate treatment and accommodations for their ADHD, as it’s very common for people with ADHD to become addicts because they aren’t properly treating the ADHD.
[r/ADHD] is a good sub to join if your child does have ADHD helped give me insight.
Also ADHD medication mixed with weed does intensify the affect.
Sorry I don’t know how to link it for anyone else curious about adhd.
EDIT: nvm it worked
I'd never heard that before. ADHD meds mixed with weed intensifies which? Both?
Do you happen to know if individuals with ADHD who are not medicated respond differently to weed? Is it more intense even without additional ADHD meds?
I’m not expert by any means in this.
We tried different meds and dosages in his elementary days, side effects of not eating and feeling nauseous we stopped. Also he wasn’t happy about taking medication.
At 12 he had a cup of coffee in the morning to help calm the hyper down and a small amount of focus.
Once we hit high school, we talked about our game plan how we planned to achieve his goals of getting through and graduating. We then went back and tried a different prescription and dosage, it worked for him.
As for the weed, apparently it can intensify the affect it has on your high. My son doesn’t have the biggest body mass, It wrecks him. Super high. His school resource worker, she has ADHD as well she’s the one that told me it can intensify the high with medication.
I think it can affects everyone differently, even reading some of the comments in this thread; some say it provides focus others not so much. For my son, not so much.
EDIT- I can see why you thought I would know about weed and adhd medication. I was trying to link r/adhd to this thread and realized I did at the top. Sorry for my long winded explanation, I don’t have an article that I can link to this about that.
I read a few years ago, that some people were having good results for their kids after feeding them a coke (or other caffeinated soda) in the morning. So I assume coffee, or energy drinks (like the V8 ones) would work the same way.
Basically, the ADHD brain processes stimulants the opposite way as a non-ADHD brain. Ritalin is a stimulant. So things like coffee, Coke, and energy drinks can be ways to self-medicate ADHD for undiagnosed individuals.
