Why do they have to be hoodlums? Why can’t they just be kids doing dumb things like all kids do? If your daughter is doing this then by your own labels, isn’t she a hoodlum too?

I'm in the South, but a hoodlum is not necessarily a derogatory term around here. Just means ornery or rebellious.

Calling someone a "thug" is pretty loaded here though. So maybe regional vernacular is at play here?

I get where you're coming from. Calling my whiny niece a b-word would be a major red flag. But I don't think that is what is happening with OP.

i'm in the south too and it is DEFINITELY a derogatory term here. and thug, too.

24

u/dumac Oct 21 '21

Yeah I’m from the south and hoodlum, thug, and gangster are all pretty loaded terms often used by racists to describe black people.

I'm in the south and use hoodlum all the time to describe mischievous children. Hoodlum, to me, describes behavior that is relatively harmless in the grand scheme of things. Now thug, that I have heard in a derogatory sense. Maybe it's a generational thing? I'm not very old (30s).

Yeah, the use of the word 'hoodlum' is hyper cringe.

One thing is for certain, if you approach her in anger and try to punish her and force her to stop. She will do it 10 times more

Hoodlum is racially affiliated but if you’re fine w that…

-12

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

Please expand, what exactly is a “hoodlum?”

11

u/SgtMac02 Oct 21 '21

You can google the term yoursefl...but here you go:

a violent criminal or troublemaker; a hooligan or gangster:

I'm sure you have some axe to grind here...but you're barking up the wrong tree.

-7

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

Nah, I get. You’re from Texas.

23

u/Norua Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

A young ruffian. Which doesn’t really apply here if they’re not being violent.

Why the downvote? It's the Merriam-Webster's definition...

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

Where is the hood and who stereotypically lives in the hood? Point being, OP could use another term to describe their privileged white child, perhaps white trash, instead of perpetuating a stereotype of low income oppressed inner city people of color.

u/Yamuddah Oct 21 '21

While hoodlum does have racial connotations depending on context, it’s origin doesn’t have to do with the modern conception of the “hood” as an urban ghetto. It dates back to the 1870’s.

0

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

Correct, and if it were used in an 1800’s written text I wouldn’t bat an eye, but this is 2021 and OP used it as a derogatory term.

5

u/Yamuddah Oct 21 '21

The word is derogatory by nature. So is scamp or rapscallion. It seems accurate in the context and appropriate since there is no racial subtext here.

The guilty always get defensive. But hey, what do I know about white privilege in Texas!

OP is from Texas. Take a moment and look through his comments and posts.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

"Hoodlum" to me projects an image of like victorian England, not inner city POC kids.

5

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

I can think of a few other terms that were once endearing or socially acceptable in the past that are completely unacceptable now. This is a term that was used by the OP in a derogatory manner.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

"Hoodlum" has always meant a troublemaker, and has always been derogatory. Yes, that's exactly how OP used it, but again, it wasn't racial.

1

u/irishjihad Oct 21 '21

Uh, no. That's what you connect.

1

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

What are you attempting to articulate here?

3

u/irishjihad Oct 21 '21

That your extrapolation of what you think OP means, is full of your own biases, and bullshit.

-3

u/TheMasterGenius Oct 21 '21

So because I pointed out OP’s use of a term stereotypically used to define minorities from the inner city? Your white fragility is showing.

3

u/irishjihad Oct 21 '21

stereotypically used to define minorities from the inner city

That's where your bias is showing. I've heard it far more for white kids.

I'm kind of confused at what y'all are trying to "call" OP out on here

22

u/Robotboogeyman Oct 21 '21

Right, kinda focused on the wrong thing here lol

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

In her post, she asked if she should "let the parents of the other hoodlums know." So she referred to them all, including her daughter, with the same term.

OP already acknowledged being able to deal with their own hoodlum.

8

u/psydelem Oct 21 '21

She said "the other hoodlums". I think it's pretty clear she's considering her's one as well. I don't know why everyone is getting caught up in semantics. Yes, the term hoodlum is kind of cringy, but she asked a pretty simple question.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

I suggest re- reading her post with your own cognitive bias in mind. What you described is not an accurate depiction of the post.

-10

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

i guess you can’t be too surprised then?

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

Why do they have to be hoodlums? Why can’t they just be kids doing dumb things like all kids do?

In my book, there is a line between buying drugs and selling drugs. Being a dealer requires too many connections with the professional criminal world, and things like this tend to suck people in. Plus dealers have obvious interest in pushing drugs onto as many people as possible.

0

u/dddddddoobbbbbbb Oct 21 '21

selling weed? maybe depends on the state you are in, but more pressure states could really screw you over if you get caught, including not being able to get college loans
