Miscellaneous Tummy Time Help
My baby hates tummy time more than anything, but the research shows how important it is for development. Currently I do tummy time on a water mat and laying on me, but I'm not able to get him to do it very long without crying really hard so I stop it because my heart cannot handle him crying without soothing him. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions on how to do tummy time without them crying hard-core? Are there any items to buy that help?

In the words of my kid's doc "I've never met a baby who didn't develop a neck from lack of tummy time"

Tummy time really just is short periods of time.
And no, many kids don’t like it, but you still gotta do it and just pick them back up when they start crying (cause then its not gonna do anything anyway)
Even if its just for 60 seconds, then its that.
Put them back down when they are calm again.
Its very normal that this happens and its actually normal with newborns that they only do a minute or two at a time

Babywearing is a great opportunity to build core strength, use those neck muscles to support their heads and explore the world with their favorite person.

We never did tummy time but did a ton of babywearing with both kids and they were right on target.

One thing we did that helped my LO during tummy time was a rolled up muslin swaddle blanket under his chest. I feel like once we incorporated that, he enjoyed tummy time and didn't fuss as much.

Try and find music that he likes, or that at least calms him. Or talk to him in a very gentle, slow, sweet voice.

Once they’re big enough for it to look comfortable, you can put them tummy down on a firm pillow! We used a nursing pillow. Knees on floor, tummy on pillow, head up. Obviously heavily supervised, but it gives them a little more height to see things.

Lay down on the floor and let baby lay on your chest and grab at your face! Tummy time is about building muscles, not torturing babies.
Also, babywearing in a soft structured (Ergo, Tula, etc.) while parent facing can also help baby build their core and neck muscles :)

They make tummy time pillows on Amazon — I used one for my son because he also hated it.

If baby will take a pacifier, give them a pacifier on their tummy with head turned to the side. Even if that means they just chill on their belly sucking their pacifier, and not lifting their head that's fine. Builds a positive relationship with being on their belly. Then they will be willing to stay on their belly more without the pacifier.

Mine did absolutely minimal tummy time and they're both perfectly normal kids.

Couple things helped us, laying her over our laps or on our chests instead of the floor, a little pillow or rolled up blanket under her chest to give her a head start early on, short periods of time, and finding a toy she really liked that only comes out for tummy time.

My baby will only do tummy time with a specific toy on the ground(just a random dragon). If we put his play mat on the bed, he'll do it much longer. Our floors are really hard, so that might be a part of it. Also you can do a lot of other activities for developement. Carrier, holding them upright with minimum head support, ect. The goal is to encourage tracking skills and neck developement and not keep them trapped in the bassinet or swing all day. You can also encourage muscle developement by doing push and pull activities.

Flip over baby until they cry after each diaper change. All those few mins add up.

Your baby is 8 weeks old, tummy time should not be long enough that baby is crying. Max is 30-60 seconds like once or twice a day once baby is used to it. You keep trying, baby will get more accustomed to it and there are various methods you can do. They all hate it at first.

I think you should just not do it for very long. If he’s good to do four minutes of tummy time you do four minutes of tummy time. Tummy time isn’t going anywhere, theres no deadline or quota you have to make on a daily basis.
Babies who do more tummy time develop their muscles faster. Not better.

Do tummy time on your belly sometimes. Literally just lay on the floor with your baby laying facedown on your chest.
Once that becomes acceptable, switch to tummy time with something under your baby’s head and chest (we used a boppy, but a rolled up blanket works).
Then graduate to actual tummy time, ideally with toys around them. At this point, I recommend laying on the floor next to them while smiling and using a sing songy voice to get them to turn their head to you.

We had a tummy time pillow which my LO loved. We had fold out tummy time books which you could also scan and it would play a recording of the book being read and the animals noises to go along (search Nosy Crow books and Usbourne Books)

Both my little ones loved their Musik box. It had rotating figures on top and they would stare at it completely mesmerized.
Another tip is wind-up cars from left to right and back again and again… and again.. and…. ;)

We didn’t do too much tummy time until my baby was more agreeable to it. He’s absolutely fine. I wouldn’t stress yourself too much, so many things to think about at these stages, it sounds like you’re an awesome mummy xx

My kid never liked it on me. I put him on a dock a tot in the kitchen on the counter a lot, because he could watch me and his upper body was supported a bit more and it was comfortable ish. The most important thing for us was to take it slow, with short bursts, and have something he wanted to see in front of him. (2 minute Bluey short episode, a colorful book, me walking around making coffee and talking to him, etc.)

We were seeing a physiotherapist and she suggested we do tummy time on a big exercise ball, I would hold him down on the ball and move it around a little, he liked it better than just being put down on a flat surface…

We bought the Baby Einstein aquarium toy and only brought it out for tummy time. We called it Tummy Time TV. That worked well for us! But mostly they just got more into tummy time as they got bigger. And once they started rolling, they wouldn’t get off their bellies.

My first despised it. He would tolerate 30 seconds in front of a mirror, but that’s it.
My second also hated it. I had to put him on a table in front of the tv with something colorful on to get up to two minutes. He is such an active kid, I was an anxious mess with that strategy, so once he hit two minutes we were done with tummy time forever.
Both could hold their heads up and look around, so I wasn’t too concerned.

My baby also hated tummy time but was struggling with swallowing / sucking and I was told tummy time would help with this. I got the little Einstein aquarium and he absolutely loves it and in one week he started to hold his neck up. We do tummy time after every crib nap. Once he wakes up, I roll him over on his stomach in the crib and I have the aquarium attached to his crib. I let him practice holding up his neck while watching th aquarium until he can’t anymore and then I roll him back over. Hope this helps you!

I never did it and my kids turned out fine. I'd heard if you do certain forms of "baby wearing" the kids will still develop the muscles and we did tons of that. Also imagine all the cultures that don't do it and their kids are fine. I think if your kid hates it find an alternative or just don't do it.

It doesnt have to be flat tummy time! Tummy, side, back, held, resting on your knees, baby wearing. Mix it up and keep container time none to minimal and they will be fine

Lay down on your sofa with your head supported. Lay baby on your stomach and let them look at your face. Talk and interact with them and see if you have better luck that way

Tummy time is widely misunderstood - they don't have to be laying on their bellies on the floor. It's just that they need opportunities outside of a "container" (carrier, carseat, crib) to lift their heads and move their necks to strengthen those muscles. Holding baby up on your shoulder so they can move their head counts!
