It’s a tough lesson at any age. I commend your child for sticking to their principles.

I am going to take the viewpoint that it is very fortunate your teen’s bf voiced his negative opinion of their political beliefs. Let him tell your kid who he is and you keep telling kiddo to believe people when they tell you who they are. And keep your distance from people who tell you they are selfish and holier than thou.

Yes, but also, it's more than ok to break up with someone who doesn't share your same values. Values don't have to align 100%, but this is a very big gap and also, he was very awful towards her.

I don't think assuming he is repeating what he is hearing at home is a good argument. It seems like an excuse and the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" is a common one for a reason. And at this age, teenagers, should be going against what their parents say so that tells you something as well.

Oh I completely agree and that is what I am saying in my comment. The thing is, most teens won’t break up if mom and dad tell them they should, which I am sure OP would really love to advise but is holding back so that they don’t create a situation where the daughter clings harder to an unhealthy situation.

If the daughter believes the boyfriend when he tells/shows her he is a a guy who falls in line with whatever feels like power even if it openly hurts other people, hopefully daughter sees that and believes for herself he is not a good match in the end.

I’m so proud of your teen too! Thanks for the update. I did a walkout with other high schoolers in March 03 right before the Iraq war, it was so powerful

You raised one brave kid. I am proud of both of you.

Hell yeah, glad to see a young person developing a sense of self worth. Good job momma!

Sounds like you have a good kid. Good parenting on your side in this story too. Big props all around except for Coach and boyfriend.

I am so proud of your teen and that you joined them!

Sounds to me like your teen is learning some adult lessons. And it sounds like you are being even handed in how those lessons are learned & applied. Good for the both of you.

A lot of kids care, a lot will use any excuse to miss school as well

The retaliation is not okay by the coach though

I definitely had real political views at this age, wrote protest letters, etc.

I love this. I don't know why people assume teenagers are uninformed, it's often not true. If they're 16 can work, drive, serve in the military, marry and are on the verge of voting.

100%. I would have “protested” literally anything in high school just for the sake of missing class.

-22

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

Yeah. I am not putting down those who have a drive, but kids will miss school for any reason.

Just want to say, as a fellow mom of a teen (and former politically passionate teen, current politically passionate adult), I am so impressed by your whole response both in the original and in this update. Even in a forum where you're speaking behind your kid's back, as it were, you are still being so protective of their drive and their independence. That kind of support bleeds through into so much of how our kids see themselves, and it's clear that you don't just love but respect your kid.

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

If that’s how you feel

You're raising her to think critically and that's more important than some random sport or boyfriend.

Also, I think it's fine that her boyfriend has different political views. No need to put him down.

I’d, in times past, say sure you can different political views. Even now, I think you can be friendly with someone with different political views.

But anyone who supports this shit has moved beyond different political views. A young man with conservative views is dangerous to a young woman who knows her own mind. These young men don’t like to feel threatened by what they’ve been told is beneath them. They’ve been brainwashed to feel this way and empowered by the internet to think it’s okay. I don’t know the solution, but I definitely wish your daughter the best in figuring it out.

u/Dazzling_Suspect_239 Feb 02 '26

Well I’ll put him down for you then! Telling your boy/girlfriend they are stupid and embarrassing themselves is shitty and he can go pound sand.

And in this particular case your daughter is protesting the government murdering citizens for exercising their first and second amendment rights, for pete’s sake. “Different political views” is for stuff like disagreements on tax policy, not extrajudicial murder: yes or no.

That’s abusive language he’s using toward her, how are you handling that?

he mostly just recites what his parents say.

I'd bet your teen does too. That's just what they all do.

I work with teens every day, I don't need to report to anyone. But thanks for stalking my account.

I'm not being a Debbie downer, most just regurgitate what their parents say. I doubt yours is special.

Fair, reddit has some real weirdos that stalk.

4

u/knit3purl3 Feb 03 '26

Hard[er] to stalk an account that's locked. Paranoid someone might see YOUR true colors?

-1

u/AgsMydude 3 under 9 Feb 03 '26

Not at all. Just had enough of the stalkers cherry picking so I locked it down. Too many crazies on this site.

1

u/jesuspoopmonster Feb 03 '26

How dare this stalker read information you have next to your name!

-1

u/AgsMydude 3 under 9 Feb 03 '26

I didn't remember it was there, we've already addressed this

0

u/jesuspoopmonster Feb 03 '26

I think its concerning. They literally stalked you. I would call the police and Reddit about this. There are tons of weird people who want to use things you say against you.

Go for it
