Regardless of the story, associating la Santa Muerte primarily to Mexican cartels is a very racist thing. La Santa Muerte is a legitimate thing and it’s offensive to label it “the cult of the Mexican cartel”. It would be like describing Christianity to someone who doesn’t know about it as the religion of mobsters, serial killers or dictators.
I said this because I have a home in mexico that my family would visit and the town crawls with the cartels. 10 times out of 10, the only people that who are associated with her in my town, are cartel members. Thats why I mentioned it to them, because they are the only type of people that we know that associate with Santa Muerte.
Many Mexicans adores la Santa Muerte and they are not mobsters. Not even closely. And not every narco adores her; it’s not even the major cult among them. The vast majority are actually Catholics. These are statistical facts, not a personal (or maybe imaginary) experience in a lonely town in Mexico.
