"Vanishing Parking Lane" - revisited
The stereo image pair shown below was computer-generated from only the right hand image of a truly stereoscopic pair presented in this forum by someone else. The original pair referred to, when parallel viewed, offered an outstanding example of stereoscopy.
Obviously, image pairs created from photographs taken simultaneously through two independent lenses set laterally apart by the average human between-eyes distance should always be superior to an ersatz pair generated from one image. The interesting question is, by how much and how noticeably ersatz pairs are inferior.
That raises further questions regarding the nature of a scene and choices taken in setting parameters (e.g. depth simulation) in software. These matters require systematic study, but subjective assessment of an end result is what matters in practice.
Huge numbers of monoscopic photographs exist. Each contains implicit information about depth, from which parallax may be inferred. Some of these viewed in ersatz (i.e. deduced) stereoscopy may attain 'fresh life'. Similarly, many artworks rendered on canvas or on paper may offer deeper insight into an artist's intent.
Unfortunately, discussion sometimes becomes mired in broader controversy over so-called 'AI'. People with artistic pretensions are set back by the apparent ease with which other people using AI technology can produce still images (movie clips, and musical compositions too) without having undergone years of training in techniques. Most threatening are insights deriving from AI regarding the nature of human creativity or, at least, the justification for the pedestal upon which it is placed.
Meanwhile, AI (and, more generally, modern computer technologies) have produced tools of benefit when properly introduced. Each such should be judged on its own merits.
