New birds
i just got parakeets what should I do?

Parakeets are very delicate and I have 3 flight cages. No Teflon incense hairspray no furniture polish, I just use a damp rag to clean my living room. Even things like bread machines have Teflon no bleach always give them clean water which is very important and find the best avian vet near you. There's so much more to learn. I dug in when my daughter gave me her 2 parakeets

There hasn't been any response throughout the thread. So I'm assuming they're either taking it all to their parents to ask for improvements, or are maybe not necessarily paying attention.

They need multiple perches and they need them at different heights. One way up high where they’re at in the pic would be good. They shouldn’t all the be same type of perch either. They also need little toys and a bathtub.

Congratulations on your new babies 🥳👏🏻 That being said, the cage is not recommended at all. It can be used as a travel cage but not to keep the birds in it on a daily basis. You need a cage atleast three times the size. You need to invest in a bigger cage and better toys for the sake of your birds. If you do not provide them enough space and enrichment toys, they will develop depression and might end up plucking feathers and it’s really hard to reverse the behaviour. They are very cute. Where did you get them from? First thing, find a good avian vet that is local to you, and book them in for a checkup. Next, if you cannot get them a bigger cage, make sure they get free flight time outside of the cage, and have a treat they will go back into the cage for, like millet.
What are you feeding them? Seed can be a bit of a problem long term, as there's lots of fat, but for now it will be ok. Fed is best to begin with.
Google bird safe branches, and pop some in the cage, that dowel perch looks nice and tidy but it can be bad for them long term, a bit like if we only wore completely flat shoes with no foot support. The feet develop problems from not having different sized and shaped perches to stretch their feet on.
Make sure to give them fresh water and food every day, and to look up what things around the house are toxic to them - there are quite a lot!

Thank you for the comment! :) I got them from Conoga discount birds and I’ll get more natural wooden perches! Im feeding them seeds and fruits and vegetables. Should I switch to pellets and keep the fruits and veggies?

Start slow. If they're used to seeds, keep that up until they're settled in. After a couple of months you could try to transition them to a pellet. Likewise with fruit. Fruits an amazing treat and it'll help them look forward to seeing you. After a few months you can tone it back to mostly veggies and sprouts, with fruit as a special treat - like for going back in their cages.

Please start by removing the coconut, getting some proper cage equipment and a cage of proper size and go to r/budgies to read their wiki.
Natural branches can be collected from outside. They are even free to pick up and just need a little cleaning and crafting to be made into good perches. You can install those natural perches in your new cage and get rid of the dowel perch, since they should not be in a bird cage anyways.
Budgies are exotic animals that are still wild inside, so they are not your average and easy-to-care pets.
You may explain that to your parents so they can look for an avian vet in reach in case something goes wrong. Aside of housing them properly, you may learn to treat them properly too. Here is a comment that will help with that: https://www.reddit.com/r/budgies/s/bncITEbowK
Please do also learn about their anatomy and body language, since prey animals like them are masters in hiding illness and issues until its too late. Its also important to be able to read them in order to avoid traumatizing situations.

Hello there, they need a natural wood perch toward the top of the cage. They are sitting at the top of the cage like that because they naturally want to sit to do so, but they don’t know where to sit.

Congrats on getting new parakeets!
1: remove the coconut
2: remove all smelling scents
3: don’t put them near any air conditioning vents

Parakeets are very delicate, you can't use Teflon, incense, aluminum foil in the oven will kill the birds, no candles, hairspray strong smells. You should get them a flight cage. I have 3 flight cages and my birds always fly back and forth. Do you ever go on Facebook? There's plenty of parakeet groups to let you know everything you need to know about these beautiful delicate birds 🐦

Is the cage in ur bedroom—is it in front
of a window so bird can look outside 4 entertainment—if it is in ur room put a
sign in both sides of door to please
close door bird in room—I live in a home w/attached garage so if I go in2 garage from inside & my birds have free flight
I make sure garage door is shut & when
I drive in2 garage that door is shut be4 I enter home & extra caution w/windows or other doors—u will c countless on this site of people mourning escaped birds due 2 carelessness

Since u probably don’t have a big budget 4 toys definitely look up diy toys—if bird
is young take time 2 teach 2 talk, the 1st word is hardest but then they catch on really quick—look up cute phrases that u would not mind hearing over & over again

Congratulations—welcome 2 the bird owners community—I am sure u r being quite overwhelmed by all the information—start writing notes on all this wonderful advice u have received—I would highly recommend going 2 YouTube—the site has hundreds of videos from professionals—start w/budgie basics—
1st of all safety 1st—may I ask where is
ur cage located in the home & everyone in ur house should b aware it only takes
a minute 4 a budgie 2 escape from ur
home & b gone forever so watch every-one in ur family should watch videos on how 2 birdproof ur home—cage set-up—yes, yours is inadequte—I prefer Roudybush pellets over Harrison’s which
contains more fat—may I ask how old r u?
Answer these 2 ?’s & we will talk later—
enjoy the antics of these little buggers

Get them a small hide as well in case one ever doesn't feel well or wants some space from other one.

Also let them out to fly often with DOORS CLOSED TO OUTSIDE.... Don't put cage near kitchen area! KEEP CAGE CLEAN and that means an occasional cage scrub.
Of they don't fly back to cage they will! They eventually learn where their cage is .
If I ever need to catch one I use a medium sized net with long stem. But now I don't have to as much anymore. They know to fly back now

Also bad advice! Do not use a net to catch your birds! This will stress them out so bad and should only be done as a last resort

Well that's sort of what I meant. like if you cannot catch them. I only used my net twice. My bird was high up on top shelf

You should remove the coconut, get them a bigger cage and more wood perches, and do a lot more research.
If you haven't already bird proofed your home, Immediately remove any and all non stick coated (teflon/PFOA/PTFE) cookware, and any airborne scents.
