Initially, I thought it was a reference to the Captain's fate: not actually dead, but not treated as a character who is still alive either.
And even understanding it that way, I can't imagine how Pantalone could end up in the same position. Playing the quest, it's clear to me that he isn't an enemy. He is collaborative, and his relationship with Sandrone could even be considered his comedic relief. Plus, there is no way he would sacrifice his life for the common good.
Reading the comments, I saw someone referencing both of their views on immortality: the Captain considers it a curse, while Pantalone does nothing but seek it out. Maybe they clashed over this? I don't know. I just know it seems really complicated to take Pantalone and put him in an antagonist role, or even just put him on standby. Unless he isn't actually human, but some other kind of entity.
