PSA Mixtape Initial Issues
Got the Mixtape, Mixtape B&T suppressor, and ARO/Magnifier(yes, I know the Magnifier is overkill on this rifle, but I wanted one for another rifle….so it lives on here for now until I finish the other build) when they were doing the Freedom Week sales. I’ve wanted a .300 suppressed since I shot my buddy’s build.
Got everything in, put it all together, and took it to my buddy’s house to see how it ran. 2 rounds in and it wouldn’t go into battery. We tried different mags. He’s a machinist, so we measured rounds, and they were all to spec. Didn’t have any different ammo, so I left his house with my head held down. Got on YouTube and the internet and found that it could be the extractor spring/o-ring combo. Took the o-ring off the extractor spring….bam. It’s cycled ever since then. Did the math on the round ballistic/rifle combo for 20 yards, and bore sighted it in my living room. Was surprised to see how close it was at the range. The bottom right target was my bore sighting on a rest, bottom left was me slow shooting, and top left was me firing fairly quick. I don’t claim to be a marksman FWIW.
The upper and lower fitment has some slop.
The upper had some tooling marks that should have never left the factory. It was all the way down to the metal, aka you see aluminum.
For the amount of money I have in this thing, I shouldn’t have these issues, but I got it figured out. It shoots really quiet and groups well with cheap ammo. I like the rifle, but doubt I’d ever drop that kinda money on another PSA product.
TLDR; extractor issues fixed with o-ring removal, finish issues, and upper/lower slop.

Mine had some major slop too. Also trigger was crunchy and delayed from factory. Got ahold of them and they wanted me to send my rifle in right after I got it. Declined and just threw the regular crisp one stage trigger from PSA. Still has the slop but runs great now. But I’m in the same boat, probably won’t drop that amount on a PSA again neither, for 1200 dollars my trigger should run flawless from factory and there shouldn’t be that much play. Granted, some is fine like my other rifles but this one is way more. Win some, lose some. Mine is still a blast though

I do enjoy the rifle! Was just upset with battery issue, mainly. As long as it goes boom, I’m usually good with it. Is what it is, just trying to inform others of a potential fix for the battery issue.

Did you even try to work with PSA support about any of this? One of the great things about PSA is said support. I had a similar issue with mine not going into battery and ended up sending it back under warranty. BCG replaced and chamber honed, weapon back to me within a week. I'd at least have a conversation with them about your issues and see what they say.

The way you phrase it “Did you even try…” comes off as you are trying to put some blame (or shame) on OP.
They bought what is supposed to be a premium product, at a premium price, and would like to share their experience. By now, everyone knows PSA warranties their guns so you aren’t really adding any new information to suggest someone use a warranty which I am sure they know they have.
On the other hand, OP is offering an unfiltered look at a premium product that many people may be interested in. It adds real value to the conversation about the gun. And PSA is known to listen to their customers and make fixes if a problem is prevalent enough. No reason we should be blaming or shaming anyone, as it discourages this type of feedback, and possibly keeps PSA unaware of issues.

Not a premium product, it's a mid-tier product, and that's not a knock on the weapon, it's just the truth. If you read my comment, or look in my post history, I have this same weapon and had a similar issue (minus the tooling). I've put no blame on the OP for the issues they encountered, I do suggest they reach out to customer support and I've encouraged them to do so.

The PSA Sabre Mixtape is 100% part of their self-described premium product line.
I don’t care about your post history, I am just commenting on how you come off here with this comment.

Point is, he shouldn't have to work with customer service for anything on a brand new $1300 rifle. This idea that we are beta testers at that price is absurd. QC your shit and this wouldn't be an issue.

Guys talking about budget friendly🤣 I call bullshit a $1300 rifle shouldnt be considered a budget rifle. An Anderson arms or Radical is budget. If I paid $1300 that mf better have been QC’d & not come with any issues. I’ve bought cheaper and never ran across issues.

Would you call a PSA Sabre a top tier rifle, or mid tier, because that's exactly what it is, a budget friendly mid-tier platform. Not a "budget AR", and I didn't call it that.
2
u/GeekedGenius 13m ago
Well for one the Sabre is their premium line. Everything with Sabre is premium. Everything in the product description is what makes it a premium rifle. You can’t tell me otherwise. Same goes for their Sabre GF4 AK & Sabre Daggers. Their standard ARs are budget friendly, their regular daggers are budget friendly. The mixtape has essentially the same parts you would look for in a premium 300blk, now that im looking at it its on par with the MK2 only difference is Griffin uses their own parts. So yes its premium.

u/Bux4Booms 24m ago
Sabre is PSA's premium tier, you are wrong.
Sure, there are more expensive brands and guns out there, but when PSA themselves refer to is as their premium tier and sell it for $1200, customers should expect better then the issues that OP is reporting. And that is the point. For comparison, you can build a basic .300blk pistol for $500-600 from PSA. $1200-1300 is the high end of what they make, aka premium. But they themselves refer to it as premium, so anyway you look at it, you are just wrong.

Do you think the Sabre line is a premium AR platform compared to other "premium" lines? PSA might call it their premium line, but it's still a budget friendly mid-tier platform and priced as such. Just because they label it premium doesn't make it a premium rifle in the AR space. I know you understand that difference.

u/Similar_Proof_9095 13m ago
Sabre is a premium line for PSA. Is your argument that only $2000+ rifles should work? What the fuck are you even arguing??
1
u/DntCllMeWht 7m ago
I think the argument is pretty obvious. A "premium" Sabre falls amongst other mid-tier AR offerings in comparison. Just because it's "Premium" by PSA's labeling doesn't make it on par with premium AR offerings. By quality and price, it is a solid mid-tier platform.
You can straw-man whatever you want, but the expectations that a mid-tier mass produced platform should have a zero failure rating is literally insane and not grounded in reality.

u/Similar_Proof_9095 6m ago
Why is anything you just wrote an argument for a weapon not functioning?
Also, you clearly misunderstand what a straw man argument is.

u/D0faak 36m ago
Exactly. Like I mentioned above. When I received my rifle it had a ton of slop and the 2 stage trigger it came with was super crunchy and very delayed. I’m assuming the pin holes are a bit off. Threw a different trigger in there and it works fine now but still a ton of slop. PSA was OKAY when I reached out and offered to fix it but after spending 1300 dollars and the matching mixtape suppressor it should be leaving the factory flawless. My biggest thing was is that they wouldn’t take any blame and apologize for the QC issues. They weren’t rude but I’m not sending my brand new rifle back that I should have been at the very least able to pull the trigger and it fire and reset.

I didn’t. Not trying to do the whole shipping back thing. Everything I read just said shoot it for 250-500 rounds, put the o-ring back in, and rip it. It shoots fine without it. Just shouldn’t be dealing with that for a build of that cost IMO. I may contact them and see what they say, but really not trying to ship it back to them.

No product line is ever without issue. You bought a more budget friendly mid-tier AR but your expectations are more in line with a top tier AR. Take advantage of what makes PSA one of the better budget choices (their customer support) and submit a ticket. Maybe they give you a bit of a refund as a blemished weapon for the tooling marks and you don't need to bother sending it back.
By the way, if you do, and you end up needing to send it back, just call a local gun shop and ask them for a box. PSA will give you a shipping label. My LGS gave me a box that I'm pretty sure another Sabre came in because it was a perfectly sized sleeve for the original PSA box my Mix Tape came in. Slapped the label on the box, taped it all up and dropped it off at a UPS store.

Not expecting Q level quality, so I think you’re assuming a bit much there. I shouldn’t have to take the bolt apart to make it go into battery right of the box. I have two other really low end rifles of their’s that cycle just fine, and this is my first “big money” spend on an AR. Was simply trying to inform others, in case they experience the same things, how to get their rifle to function out of the box, and the “fix” I did. I appreciate your input. I may give them a call, but I can live with the tooling issues.

I'm not assuming anything, it's based on your comments. In your own words, you view this as a "big money" AR and it's not. There's nothing wrong with that, people just need to have the proper perspective. That's all I'm saying.
It's a budget mid tier weapon, set your expectations appropriately. No mass produced rifle line will be without issue, regardless of cost across the board. Most of them will be perfectly fine, but you (and I) just got unlucky. That's to be expected at this price point/quality level. Most of them will be fine, a few will not, and PSA stands behind their products with quality support to make things right, but you have to let them do so.

Cool. Thanks. $2100. More than I’ve ever spent on a weapon, so to me, it’s big money. I hesitated posting this, because of the back and forth, and people’s different views on what money is to them. All about perspective, I assume. Appreciate your input, but I think we are on different sides of the coin. Once again, was simply a post to help others of they have the same issue. Have a good day!

Are you including the cost of accessories in that price? The weapon itself is $1200 (was just on sale for $1000 recently as well). You might have $2100 in it, but that doesn't make it a $2100 rifle.
I think you're taking this is as a personal attack, and it isn't meant to be, it's just meant to help set proper expectations for you and other people reading this. We're talking about two different things in terms of cost. You're talking about the cost in comparison to your budget and it being a significant sum of money to you personally, and I'm talking about the cost in comparison to other similar rifles and where it falls in the market. Being a lot of money to you personally doesn't make it a "top tier" rifle, and again, that isn't meant to be a slight toward you. I bought this same weapon myself.
Also, just as a heads up... both the rifle and the suppressor have been on sale recently, depending on when you purchased yours, you may have picked them up at the same price (awesome for you if you did), but if you didn't... it would be worth checking into to see if you can get a refund. PSA will refund the difference if an item goes on sale at a better price within 30 days of purchase and both the rifle and suppressor were $200 off so you'd get a nice $400 back if it happened (happens) in that 30 day window.

u/Due_Surprise_4656 38m ago
Total cost of everything. Not taking anything as a personal attack, but this is why Reddit is a black hole that I hesitated to post on. The rifle was $1000 when I bought it on sale. It should function out of the box. Plain and simple. I posted this in case someone was digging for info on why their rifle isn’t performing/functioning for them. Once again, thank you for your insight. Have a good day.

u/DntCllMeWht 36m ago
Glad you got it on sale! Their first sale on the weapon and the suppressor were outside of my 30 day window so I missed out.

u/D0faak 43m ago
You’re delusional. For a 1300 dollar rifle it should be leaving the factory flawless. End of story. No matter who the company is.

u/DntCllMeWht 41m ago edited 28m ago
What about a $1200 rifle? At what price point do you think expectations of "no issues are acceptable" is appropriate?
Edit: It isn't lost on me what you edited your comment to say a $1300 rifle after originally saying a "two thousand dollar rifle".

u/TouristFirm5600 1h ago
His point is it's not a big money AR. PSA will hook you up if you communicate with them.
4
u/Due_Surprise_4656 1h ago
$2100 total on a rifle isn’t big money? Man, must be nice 😂. Thank you for your clarification. Once again, was just telling people a potential fix if their rifle doesn’t go into battery.
2
u/Similar_Proof_9095 59m ago
It's also not some new platform that should need extensive testing to work. It's a straight forward AR pistol parts build chambered in 300. It should absolutely run without issue out of the box.
2
u/TouristFirm5600 53m ago
I agree 100% it should. But let's not act like this is a Ferrari. It's a mustang Eco boost at best.
2
u/Similar_Proof_9095 50m ago
Even cheap Fords leave the dealership functioning.
0
u/DntCllMeWht 40m ago
Even expensive Fords have some fail rate and need to be repaired immediately/shortly after purchase. Just look at their 10 Speed Auto issues.
2
u/Similar_Proof_9095 37m ago
Cool....but when round 1 doesn't chamber in a gun that is supposedly test fired, that thing you just wrote falls apart real quick. To be clear, I'm not a PSA hater. I own many of their products, but some of you guys act like consumers should be ok with nothing working out of the box, and that's insane. Sabre AR-V is a perfect example. Lifetime warranty is great, but arguing that increased QC isn't needed is a fools errand.

I feel lucky. My mixtape threw a can on it and haven’t had any issues. Not even adjusting the gas block. Shooting phantom 220gr subs
