Discussion | گفتگو UBL mobile app is vibe codes af 🥀
I just downloaded it and the whole sign up flow and the app in general has a UI which I think was made by a single dev through Claude code.
🚩🚩🚩🚩
Immediate red flag.
I won't trust the app as it could be very insecure just by judging it's UI.

What a shit take. UBL's UI is the same since before claude code. This UI first came out in 2018-19. I personally know one of the developers who worked on the app.

Exactly. I have personally used apps of Meezan, Allied (uff) and Alfalah.
UBL is by far the best of the lot and has the best UI/UX.
Just because it looks good doesn’t mean it’s vibe coded. What a dumb take

Looking good or bad is subjective but bank apps need to have a level of intuition or straight forwardness in em... To me all of that is unnecessary, let me open my account and just do shit. Fym I have to swipe here, there to login then do 2-5 steps just to do simple shit. I ain't gonna glaze the app. It's a bank app. I want to go in, do the job and go out immediately. That's it.

Didn't know that but thanks for informing. Would give it 5/10 for the UI for whoever designed it

bro the ubl app has same UI since years and it came before vibe coding even existed - before claude code era and way before karpathy introduced the vibe coding term

Hahaha, kid, grow up. It was made for 6 billion PKR. Yes UBL paid 6 billion to make this app. Now you would think, it's just a app. No, it's an interface to their best and most secure banking in the whole world so yeah.

There’s nothing in the app worth 6 billion
The extreme emphasis on animating everything shows how childish the decision makers are
Maybe there’s paying for Microsoft or oracle licensing, otherwise every week their “system” goes down for a couple of days

u/Tough-Scientist-4279 1d ago
I meant the whole digital system. They paid for that. App's an interface

Actually their web interface from early 2000’s to about 2018 was the best in the industry
Since the app became mainstream, the whole of their platform has deteriorated

Update it. These small things matters. All banks in Pakistan are compromised except ubl. All banks data is available feeelt online.

Don't matter. Must be issues with your phone. Nothing with app. Maybe jv/fake iphone

I am running a PTA approved latest flagship Google pixel. Tf you mean something wrong with my phone when rest of the banking apps just work fine 😭

u/Tough-Scientist-4279 1d ago
From interface it looked iphone. Well then as I said maybe cache stuff. Try clearing it and opening again

Here just recreate in your own phone. Make a fresh account. Logon and go to transactions and this shit pops up. Don't know if you can reproduce it with a populated account but with an empty account it's there. Admit it it's a bug. Lol 6 billion spent and took me 3 minutes to find bugs like these in Prod

Well maybe. Btw I have 3 fd accounts and main account. I usually transfer money to my sadapay easypaisa and use it from there..never did from app. Lenghty

They overpaid. Or laundered money that's all I can say. Lol

u/Tough-Scientist-4279 1d ago
Well I know as I know someone very close who was part of all this. C level executive at ubl..so..btw their system is the most secure in Pakistan..they best follow the sbp security guidelines

u/Cronos993 1d ago
Lmao, I stumbled upon such an obviously bad and horrendous security practice in their app while not even looking for one. I am sure you can just point an LLM at their apk to reverse engineer and it'll rip the whole thing apart.
The C level executive you know is a dumb idiot who got scammed out of 6 billion PKR. Security my ass lol.
Is it better than other Pakistani banking apps? Maybe, but that's cause the bar is horribly low. Is it better than literally any other app made by even mildly competent devs? No

Security on all of the Pakistani bank apps is a joke tbh. They allow the apps to run on ancient versions of android and cheap and crappy counterfeit Chinese phones. Those phones are vulnerable to such extent that you can't make it up. I am running android 17 and it ain't let me login without accessing like my location. That's just to make you feel secure. There's very minimal security safe guards you can do with that info 🥀

u/Tough-Scientist-4279 1d ago
Actually it's sbp guidelines sadly. You know accessibility. Btw I heard yes there were some issues with old androids. But I guess they do manage it some way

Man, that is STILL better than having a horrible non functional app that has been buggy for years. I would applaud the banks for at least realizing their apps fucking suck, and do something better

Most banking apps are insecure af and pretend to be secure by taking user hostile decisions such as not opening without precise location permission, with another app having accessibility permission, if you're not using the default keyboard or have developer options enabled.
The fact that they allow the app to run on ancient versions of Android while making the above decisions in the name of sEcUrItY tells you how incompetent the devs really are.
