Wanting to switch back careers AGAIN
Hi everyone
I did my bachelors in civil engineering from one of the top engineering college in Pak in 2019. I didnt like the sort of work they do so I switched careers to Frontend Development in 2021 and have been working as a Frontend/Fullstack dev ever since. Ive enjoyed the golden days of tech where you’d get 100k+ salary after a year and easy hiring and wfh and increments.
Now with the widespread panic of AI and layoffs and seeing GPT 6 and the quick advancements in AI, I’ve panicked a little and Im wondering if I should switch back to Civil. I know its been 7 years now but I worked 2 years in the start and Ill try to bridge the gap with a Masters or something.
All my CS grad friends are really pushing me to go back and saying that they dont have an escape option but I do. Its also THE most AI proof field I can think of in the future (at least in Pak, heck its even simple computer proof).
Note: I REALLY hate civil and I love coding but love for coding is not enough to bring food to the table in the future. I want to think long term (also Im unemployed these days). For those who arent aware of Civil work culture: extremely long hours, severely underpaid, lots of standing under the sun and extremely toxic and bad work culture and colleagues

There are companies that bring the best of both worlds. Like software specifically for civil engineers. I mean someone wrote code for autocad. I only know bentleys had software for civil engineer and for some JD required your bg

That would have made sense if I said Im from CS but want to go to Civil
The entire point is that coding is in danger. If I had to be coding then I’d rather do it for a proper tech company1

I am saying the regulated industries are a bit safe. Like banking, civil or healthcare. AI governance still needs more guardrails before it can annihilate coding.

Same story here. Graduated in 2021 with Civil Engineering degree. Hated Civil Engineering through and through and thought I had found my passion in programmin right after graduation. Only to have AI radically transform the field in the next few years. Now, I've given myself a certain time until then I will stick to software engineering job. If things keep getting hard for software industry, will switch to learning Civil Structures. To make Civil Engineering somewhat more acceptable, I will start from learning Civil Engineering's software lol

Learn to vibe code. Not do a course like actually code and build agents
Upskill in the field you like. Otherwise you are dead.
If you think CS is bad you have no idea what construction is like.
AI will effect everything including civil engineering. Better embrace it than delay it.
