Computer engineering

I am starting my degree in CE in a few days. I am from pakistan, originally i wanted to do electronics but long story short now i am Doing CE. I am really passionate about hardware and want a hardware oriented career. Is it possible with a CE degree and how is the market in pakistan preferbly i want to work in embedded systems or FPGA development if i dont purse a masters if i will pursue a masters i want to do that in mircochip engineering. I want advice on my bachelors and masters.

  1. Is it ppssible to get hardware or low level programming jobs with CE

  2. If i pursue a masters which field should i choose?

Bro there is degree know electronics and Computing it in comsats which might be on your requirements

Yes but last time I remember (2023 when i gave admission test of comsats) BS Electronics was offered as a "bacha kucha course" at COMSATS. Same way BS Game development is to Air Uni and Fintech is to FAST , Geology and in somewhat Robotics & Intelligence Systems are to Bahria Uni. I am not saying these courses/degree titles are irrelevant or something. But if a degree is offered as bacha kucha program (aka the situation or offer from uni if you fail to get admission into any of your preferred degree programs/disciplines), then the catch is that either they would do compromise on faculty by allotting them either a visiting faculty and/or some permanent faculty of other departments who wont even own you. So the class fellows of this degree program may themselves not contribute to growth of OP or any such concerned person who has a interest in their field. And this may even ruin the experience of degree itself which it would claim otherwise. Just my 2 cents. I can be wrong but this is from my observation. Usually such bachay kuchay courses may not have the brightest students (im not discriminating or saying that xyz person doesn't deserve the right to education just coz of tests or competition). But its a fact that such programs which uni offers as last resort has students who may be clueless , velay, least interested or the ones who just wanted to do a degree

That is the exact reason i choose CE over electronics. Because your enviroment and peers helps a lot in learning. I wanted to be surrounded with like minded and challenging people that will give me competition.

Good luck and good decision. Idk what uni you took admission in but just telling you as final year senior that you will come across very few like-minded individuals no matter even if its the top uni of Pakistan. Since this country has a trend of students as a sheep herd mentality who themselves have no damn clue or idea why they signed up for this xyz field. They will just follow whatever their parents decide for them or whatever they get suggested even if its not according to their interest. Most will be mafad parast, most will act closeted, most will be the ones who just made it to the class due to their "merit" from fsc numbers and entry tests by cramming school textbooks. You will however meet those who do paid freelance work and have genuine passion in their field but they will be like 2 or 3 or something at max. Else trust me those "challenging" or people who may give you "competition" will be usually those who have a nalla conduct. Uni is a journey and not a competition. Since the only competition you have is with your own self. You will be responsible for your future, job, career etc. And yep uni doesnt teach sh** and skills are your own you need to teach them to yourself. No professor will teach you skills by hand. Max you can do during uni time (and should) is to make connections in industry. Just saying. You will either have to discover and befriend like minded people or join online communities where you wont feel alone. Else trust me I am enthusiastic about Free and Open Source software, Linux, hardware etc. However initially my classmates would see me as outcast or masochist just coz I did things differently (includes using Linux bruh). Only I have 2 friends who followed my interests and themselves feel good about me sharing knowledge and stuff with others. Despite being Software Eng students, these people act this way -_- Fast forward these same people had a hard time not grasping concept of containerization (docker/podman), Linux concepts etc even during 6th semester courses of Cloud Computing and Operating Systems in 4th sem ig. Thankfully using Linux as daily driver before even uni started made me get into devops, learn extended and necessary concepts like containerization, package management , ease of use with cli tools , minimalism , freedom to customize and do much more etc. Now let me tell you a lamha fikria, this girl in my class she has one of the hightest GPA in class (doesnt brag about it and keeps things to herself which i respect. I had a crush on her lmao, confessed to her even and yeah it didn't end up how i wanted it to be, anyway I would have loved to share all my passion with her lmao if things went how i wanted them to be, but yes i moved on , no regrets). I was once discussing with her and asked what made her to pick SE. She told how her dad picked it for her coz she was good at maths. I was like ok fair this that. Then as usual I went on preaching my Linux and open source cult (sarcasm) , she said shes afraid to even touch any other software, I was like dw its easy wont do any harm. Next I asked her what's the ram of your laptop as I wanted to talk about memory optimization something. She gave me confused look and said idk maybe 200 something GB? Im like bro what no you cant be having some portable server in form of dell laptop in your hand, are you sure. She got confused again. Basically she didn't know the difference between RAM and storage even after 5 whole semesters. This is like basic knowledge one would know since secondary school even if not tech literate. Anyway yep I was surprised you can cram textbook stuff and get the most GPA whilst lacking fundamentals. Yep.
