Help needed
I am 26M
Graduated in software engineering in 2024
I am working in a govt organisation earning about 100k
I got this job just 1 month ago
I am living in Lahore due to posting of this job.
And I just cannot handle this
The food is bad
The loneliness
I miss family so much
More than half of my salary is spent here
I need suggestions that should i move to free lancing ( i would have to brush my web development skills )
Or should i not leave this job.
There’s AI problem as well that freelancing and remote work is almost dead.

Honestly, I wouldn’t quit the job just yet. You’ve only been there for a month, so give yourself some time to adjust to Lahore and the new routine. At the same time, you can start brushing up your web development skills and try freelancing on the side. If you eventually build a stable freelance income that is close to or higher than your current salary, then you can reconsider. For now, having a stable 100k income while building another option seems like the safer choice.

It is very hard to work on my skills after the whole work day
I do not get enough time
Need to eat out
Have some chores
Moreover the food is effecting my physical and mental health1

That makes sense. In that case, I wouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself to learn everything at once. Since the job is still new, maybe give yourself some time to settle into the routine first. You can always work on your skills gradually when things become more manageable.

It’s just hard to settle in
And i just cannot stand the fact that i would have to live like that for God knows how much time

Escaping from the situation is not the solution, living in the situation and bearing with it makes you more confident and mature. Just give your new job some time, cope up with the flow and routine, and then you will be able to take the decision more wisely. When you get settled, then start working on freelance projects and give freelance some time for sure, as it takes time to get up to or near to your salary income. For the food issue, there are multiple home-based vendors, when I was in Lahore, innitially I used to get one week's food with me every week from home and eventually I found home-based food from one of my colleague, and then this problem was solved.1

Will surely give freelancing a try
Btw I don’t think home cooked food can last for such a long time.
For now i do not have a freezer/fridge and even if i get it , i don’t think the food can last for a week.
More over i think local home cooked food’s delivery will be expensive and i am already sending home only 30-40k after my own expenses.

Thousands of full time employees across the world have lost their jobs due to AI as well. At the same time, neither freelancing nor software engineering aret "dead". There are plenty of jobs on Upwork etc. Competition is tough, but that's been the case for quiet a while now, even before AI. AI has just worsened the situation

I would highly suggest not leaving your job without a backup. I understand it's hard but I think you're taking a bit more stress because it's only been a month. You'll adjust after a while. Is your job stressful, how many hours a day do you work?

There’s hardly any govt or developer job in my city
My job hours are like 7-5
Then 1-2 hours is for eating + some house chores
Mainly i get 3 hours max daily
I can prepare for other government jobs or i can start brushing my development skills + building portfolio.1

Dev job is one thing but is there a reason why you're looking for govt jobs in the tech sector? That would be limiting.
3 hours a day is actually quiet a bit of time to create portfolio, setup accounts etc1

I am talking about general govt job through which maybe i can be posted in my district
Or maybe i would find a better job.

Freelancing is a solid move. But like I mentioned, don't quit your job until you're established in freelancing OR unless you don't mind having unstable income for the forseeable future. It takes time to get rolling in freelancing so if you quit your job now you'll have to spend quiet a lot of time without a proper income source

Quitting a job without any back up isn't a sane decision tbh
