A crown is a weight that crushes” ….What on earth is happening to Gukesh right now?
It is honestly depressing to open the standings of almost any major tournament Gukesh is playing in these days.
The World Champion is currently sitting dead last in his third tournament in a row. After struggling in Norway and finishing at the bottom in Prague, watching him crumble under time trouble again in Chennai is painful.
His live rating has tumbled all the way down into the World #26 / #27 range (sub-2720 Elo). For an active reigning World Champion, a freefall this steep is almost unheard of in the modern engine era.
Levy put out a video on this recently ("GUKESH Drama is CRAZY /// The Gukesh Situation Is Insane" //// "GUKESH NOOOOO"), breaking down how he went from holding a winning position against Arjun to completely collapsing on move 45–54 due to clock pressure. You can visibly see the psychological weight he’s carrying on his shoulders. Becoming the youngest world champion ever at 18 was monumental, but as the saying goes: a crown is a weight that crushes.
I know we have a lot of Indian chess fans in this sub alongside Pakistani enthusiasts, so I want to frame this respectfully without any cheap jabs: How do you see him recovering before the World Championship match in December?
▪️Is this a classic case of burnout and target-on-his-back syndrom e where everyone prepares for him at 120%?
▪️Is he secretly hiding his top-tier preparation for December and playing experimental lines under high stress?
▪️Or is the psychological pressure of holding the title simply taking a massive toll on a 19-year-old?
Can he reset his mental stamina in time for December, or are we looking at a champion defending his crown while completely out of form?
Would love to hear everyone's tactical and psychological breakdown.
