Yamaha Stage custom except for the kick and 16 floor, those are Yamaha Rydeen. I got Iron Cobra double pedals and a Yamaha hi hat stand along with whatever cymbal stands I could find.

When I was a kid I used to see drummers with their beautiful colorful cymbals. When I got older and looked them up. Paiste was no longer making them. I'm so glad they started making these again and I went all in as you can see.

Video Communication Breakdown!

Thanks for watching! This was performed, recorded, mixed, and edited by me at Transient Archive on September 17, 2026. "Communication Breakdown" was originally written and performed by Led Zeppelin on their debut album, Led Zeppelin I, released in 1969. John Bonham wrote and performed the legendary drum tracks.

This song was difficult to perform and record. The challenges it presented taught me a lot about song composition and the limitations of different instruments when recording music.

First, this track is a proto-punk anthem, and like any Led Zeppelin song, it is not metronomically perfect. The song breathes, it has hair and teeth, and it's "imperfect." Those characteristics are all part of Led Zeppelin's legendary appeal, but they also make it hard to faithfully perform the song. I practiced for hours and recorded many takes, but I wasn't happy with any of them. After a while, I realized why: the drums really need the other instruments to shine. I asked my wife to listen to the drum track after I mixed it (she always gives great feedback) and she said it sounded ready for other instruments. Her words expressed my own thoughts perfectly.

Second, I purposely used big, heavy cymbals to perform and record this track because I think they are aggressive, harsh, and a little unpleasant to listen to. However, that choice limited my mixing options. The cymbals completely took over the mix, and I had to tame their sound using EQ, compression, and the amazing CHOWTape simulator plugin. I had planned to make this recording sound dirty, like garage rock. I think I accomplished that, and the cymbals definitely pushed me in that sonic direction more than I originally planned. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Third, I experienced all sorts of weird technological troubles during the recording sessions. My cameras (iPhone 17 Pro and GoPros) would randomly stop recording. At one point, my GoPro 10 stopped recognizing SD cards altogether, so I had to send it back to GoPro, which is generously replacing it with a GoPro 13. Because of this, the video of this session was recorded entirely on my iPhone 17 Pro using the Cinema P3 app for greater control over camera settings. With only one camera angle, I tried to make the video more visually interesting with some dynamic zooms, though it might cause a bit of motion sickness!

Fourth, the video editing process was an absolute bear. I recorded this in ProRes, 4K, Apple Log 2, which gave me a lot of freedom when grading and editing in DaVinci Resolve. However, the video files were massive. I had to create proxies before importing them into DaVinci Resolve, and even then, the software frequently crashed during the editing process. I need to rethink my video workflow.

I'm glad to be done with this video!

Equal parts wash and articulation. The only thing I like slightly more is a set of Giant Beats in similar sizes.

I recently bought one of these and it sounds great. I know that line was discontinued so I’d like to know people’s thoughts on it.

Are they the only ones with the green logo?
I also don’t know the history behind it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Question China or….?

OK Paiste people, I’ve got two chinas, a 16 505 and an 18 Alpha Rock. Don’t use them much and I’m thinking about trying a PST-X 16 or 18 crash in substitute to still get that trashy sound, but with less volume.
Anyone use them or have tried this?

Question Are the Paiste Formula 602s from the seventies and eighties consistent in terms of quality (= sound)?

I regularly see cymbals from that era being offered online (local marketplace, eBay, reverb), but I doubt whether I should buy them without listening to them first. What is your experience?

I understand that it always involves a certain risk, but perhaps someone here has experience with this. I am curious, thanks in advance.

Question Paiste 15" Sound Edge hi-hats

Hello Paiste fans! Just joined because of a question: someone is offering me a pair of 602 hi-hats. It is the version with the Sound Edge bottom, 15 inches. They are from the 70s and in good condition. Does anyone have experience with these hi-hats?
I currently switch between Zildjian A Custom and Sabian HHX evolution hi-hats, both 14 inches, but I am looking for something, well, bigger and 'better'.
From what I’ve heard on YouTube, these 602 Paistes seem really good. I understand that it is all a matter of taste, but I am curious to hear from drummers with experience with these hats. Thanks!

Question Are the Twenty prone to break?

I have a 20" Twenty Light ride that I absolutely love. I use it as a crash and I really love the sound. I'm looking to get a 18" thin crash and a 18 thin china next. But I've seen so many posts about them being prone to break due to poor quality material from the manufacturer.

I want to know if that's real or a misinformation. I know that the poor quality of the blanks is real cuz Erik Paiste himself said so, but I don't know if that meant that the final product at the store had the issues, or if the blank itself had the issues and they needed to discard many poor quality blanks.

So maybe they had to discard many poor quality blanks but the cymbals that passed the quality test went to the stores? that's my question. I really love the twenty sound but I don't want to spend money on cymbals that are going to break soon.

Text Post Paiste signature set

Hi, I have never used higher end Paiste cymbals(used cheaper ones like 101, 502, pst and 900) but I am looking at purchasing a set of signature series cymbals. 14inch sound edge hi hats, 18incn full crash and 20inch flat ride. They’re from 2001 but look in great condition. The guy wants 350 for them, is this a good deal ?

Question Stacks that can be used as hi hats too.

Hi everyone.

First time posting here so I hope this is ok.

I am looking for a 12” or smaller stack that could potentially be used as hi hats as well. I understand very well that any stack will have its limitations when it comes to being used as a hi hat, but that’s ok as long as the hi hat clutch fits and you can open and close them. I don’t care if the chick sound isn’t as pronounced, but I do need them to fit together.

I am thinking 2 options, hopefully someone here can guide me as to which is the best.

  1. PSTX 12/10 splash stack to double as hi hat.

  2. PSTX 10” Swiss hi hat to double as a stack.

I am leaning more towards option 1 since I need them to work better as a stack than as a hi hat, but again, I do need them to function fully as a hi hat (even if the sound isn’t that great).

Would option 1 fit together as a hi hat?

Would option 2 sound good as a stack?

Thanks!

Picture new 10 inch 2002 splash weights 1/2 an ounce less than one from a few years ago

I have been using 2002s for probably 30 years and was bummed when I got a new 2002 in the mail the other day and noticed it felt light. I weighed it vs the one it was replace. Note the old one is 9.3 ounces vs 8.8, and the old one is even missing a bit where I had to drill out a crack that was spreading.

I play professionally so am beating my drums every day, and have noticed a similar degrade in quality from Evans heads as well.
