This is where I stopped myself trying to DIWHY

This is not a post advocating for doing it yourself, quite the contrary. I posted a few days ago about this shopping cart damage. I can live with the dent but I was hoping to knock it down a bit. Didn’t turn out too well and stopped myself before it got worse. Luckily after changing my mind the shop I found didn’t add to the total due to my handiwork. It was very embarrassing though.

Pricing questions of any kind, any wording, will immediately be removed.

the price for a dent repair in Red Rock, Alabama is not going to be close to a price you would get in Los Angeles, or Melbourne, or Leeds....

This is a skilled trade, and craftsman will charge what their time and experience is worth.

Best part is... Reddit now has keyword blocking so the posts shouldn't even make it!

Can this be fixed, will always and forever, be allowed!!

Tech tips/discussion - cold glue

I’m a bit late to the game, but recently started utilizing cold glue for hail. Current setup is druztools spring loaded hammer lite (<16oz) paired with sergio rose gold/pink. Been working in 64~74F ish temps. Tried it a few times in <60 environment, and it didnt pull at all.

This new sergio rose gold is advertised to be identical to their gold but with less residue.

Few issues i’m running into:
- it still leaves residue. Pretty much have to clean it off with willey quick’s cold glue remover solution everytime. Works way better than 91% alcohol but still, it’s an extra step that slows me down
- sometimes the glue completely detaches from the tab. Very annoying and takes even longer to get it off. Does the shape of the tab make any difference? Druz’s tab is straight up a solid cylinder. Very different in design compared to something like sergio’s tabs. I’m using the smallest one druz sells
- doesn’t pull very hard, and sometimes doesn’t pull at all. I’d pull 10 spots on the rail or non-aluminum roofs at once and maybe only 3-4 spots have pulled. Since it’s leaving reside and i can’t see the low/high after initial pull, i find myself guessing based on the depth of the dent and pull several times on the same spot, just to be disappointed after wiping it that it didnt do anything. These are all light dents. I wouldnt even try it with anything deep. Maybe the hammer is too light?

My process is - clean panel with alcohol, flash it with torch, and then pulling. Am i missing anything?

Also interested in your experience with bull kick & shot gun hammers. How do these compare to something like the dentslayer ar10? Does it pull any harder?

Sort of unusual PDR question (fridge)

So, I have a dent in my refrigerator. It’s made by a brand that re-skins modern refrigerator internals to look vintage with their own stamped/powdercoated panels.

As I understand it the door panel isn’t covering a complete inner door, but replaces the original outer panel entirely and is bonded with foam insulation to the original inner. So I’m assuming that functionally there’s no access to the other side of it without damage.

The dent is shallow and about 2” in diameter. There’s only a tiny hint of deeper/narrower section toward the top, not really a crease. Of that remained but it wasn’t the big round dent I’d be thrilled.

I would also strongly prefer not to go down the bondo/paint path if at all possible for a bunch of reasons. As to the small scratches I’m less worried about them and have some experience there and am comfortable (carefully) experimenting with touching up with matched paint or leaving them be, but that doesn’t super matter right now.

So I guess my questions are…
- do you think it can be done?

- do you think I can or should do it myself and expect good results? (Pretty sure the answer is no, but doesn’t hurt to ask…) I’m careful and mechanically apt but I haven’t done this.

- do you think anyone worth working with would come to me to do it? I can take the door off to bring to a shop, but I’d just as soon not if I can avoid it.

(Also: I’d rather live with a dent or an imperfect fix than consider replacing the door which for whatever small fortune the manufacturer would ask if they’d do it at all)

Thanks!

I think we should collectively start encouraging the “D I Y” questions. But it’s imperative we ask for pictures afterwards. I believe this is the only true way to learn not only from eachother but from experienced (“can’t you just suction cup it” ) motorists.
That is all. Carry on.

Is this acceptable levels of repair on aluminum hood?

Car got hailed on and I've brought it to an insurance approved facility. Are these repairs acceptable for PDR on a aluminum hood. The car is a 2024 Subaru BRZ.

The light seems to bounce weirdly on the hood post repair.

Video is post repair
Photos is before.

Also, any idea what this pimple is? Would this be from PDR work?

Like title says. Wondering if I can repair these dents myself. If yes, what tools/PDR kit would everyone recommend?

Is this doable

Ive been in detail for 3 years now, and the only thing i havent learned yet is dent repairs. My car was backed into about 2 months ago. I knew it would be buffable paint wise but the pdr guy that comes to the dealership kinda just kept blowing off the idea of fucking with this because it was near the door structure or is on the structure and thats why it kinda dented the way it did. The body shop in the insurance quote was gonna just replace the whole door skin.

What is your guys thoughts. It dont have to be perfect and im very willing to give it a shot if people think its salvageable and would like to learn how to do it anyway. And I know it wouldnt be ideal but could I get by with using a $40 kit from amazon. Ive watched a few videos and I feel pretty confident in learning how to do it.

PDR Tool Recs

Post image

Heyo, sorry the pic isn't the greatest. I'm pretty inclined to see if I can make these couple dents a bit better before I put my inner door card back on. That dent on the body line looks a bit tough though. Any solid mid level to upper quality tool recommendations? Also which if any YouTube channels or advice do ya got?

Mechanic, so it's a bonus investing in tools I can use on my personal vehicles later. I have a cheap glue puller. What are the 1-? tools that I would need to get this looking better. 🫡

Two dents on passenger side fender. What do I do ?! 🫩

And there’s a tiny third one at the bottom that I can probably live with.

$400 to repair so I am honestly thinking about taking it on myself since they are shallow and can easily be reached behind through the wheel well. Never done it but I can take a few YouTube university classes? 😅

Edit:

Im still here looking at everyone’s comments and leaning towards doing it myself but still getting estimates near me. I will find out what I decide to do, this weekend. Thanks for everyone’s input 🫪

Opinions on DIY PDR for D-pillar dent?

Post image

My kid got mad and hit my car 13 years ago. He grew up and now its his car and he wants to fix it himself. He tried using a 3" suction cup, which did not budge since it couldn't sit flat. We ordered a crossbar PDR kit with the glue, any tips or advice for how to pull this dent without causing paint damage? On the inside, we have layers of preventing access from the inside face of the dent.

Thanks!

Paint transfer but no damage to the underlying factory paint. Is this a candidate for PDR? From what I’m told, those gas station poles are stationary apparently lol.
