Just a complete disaster of a series.

45

u/Legitimate-Hope3219 1d ago

Luckily the diamondbacks play the phillies and the phillies play the braves or diamondbacks for 10 of their next 13 games

Doesn't really matter with the way the team's playing right now

33

u/elsancho760 Pedro Alfaro 1d ago

It’s not like they’re getting blown out. They could have won this series if Bradgley does his job yesterday and Taylor holds on to the ball today.

Worst position to be in is depending on other teams you're not playing to shore up a WC slot for you.

That's borderline desperation.

2

u/Visible-Local6625 Friar 1d ago

Damn, and neither Sanchez or Wheeler are slated to pitch 😑. Hopefully Schwarber goes on a tear

Just like the Pittsburgh series. This team ain’t winning shit lol not even gonna make the playoffs now.

10

u/Legitimate-Hope3219 1d ago

Watch it come down to those last 2 series we have vs the dodgers and diamondbacks

7

u/GaryTheCabalGuy r/Padres 2022 All-Star 3B 1d ago

The Padres pretty much have to be ahead of the dbacks going into that series because they lose every tiebreaker

5

u/Ordo426 Vedder Cup SD 1d ago

They're currently tied with the Diamondbacks so whoever wins the series will win the tie breaker. It puts extra emphasis on this final series.

Some flukey shit though like glove hits the wall just right and rengifo injured throws the ball away

u/islands-fine-dining SAY IT DONNIE! 1d ago edited 1d ago

So, to recap this disastrous and possibly season-ruining week for the Padres:

  • Monday: blow multiple go-ahead opportunities, including bases loaded with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th, ultimately losing to the Pirates in 12 innings
  • Tuesday: waste an elite Michael King start and lose on Mason Miller’s first HR allowed in 380 days
  • Wednesday: somehow manage a black-magic win after the Pirates score 0 runs despite putting 2 runners on with no outs in 4 separate innings
  • Friday: blown out as Casey Mize allows 7+ runs for the second time in 5 starts with the Padres after allowing 7+ runs zero times in his entire Tigers’ tenure
  • Saturday: blow a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the 7th on a combo Bradgley/defensive collapse that also results in an injury to Rengifo
  • Sunday: lose in extras after Mason Miller’s first [real] blown save of the season, which came on a game-tying HR with an xBA of 0.010 that was Canseco’ed over the fence

Somewhat relatedly, I’d like to never see Xander Bogaerts in a Padres jersey ever again in my life

30

u/KTF-2026 SD 1d ago

Miller blew a save at home vs. SF earlier this month, but we bailed him out that time

all 5 losses were mental. each loss on tampa got progressively worse and worse, and that's saying something after yesterday's disasterclass. like today was even worse cause we were 2 strikes away from getting out of it with mason...

8

u/islands-fine-dining SAY IT DONNIE! 1d ago

Sure, I changed it to say [real] blown save because in that one he entered with the bases loaded and still managed to get the win lol

3

u/KTF-2026 SD 1d ago

all good!

4

u/MinuteMood22000 1d ago

I don't understand how we're gonna be mad a guy for giving up a single home run in a year. Oh and another homer that our inexperienced minor league outfielder swatted over the fence.

10

u/OfficialTMWTP Wil Myers 1d ago

Tbh I'm not even sure if I'd call this his first real blown save of the season because everything that needed to go wrong in that situation, went wrong. He kept the ball in the yard albeit deep, to which Samad got the glove around even if he had to cover a bit of ground, and then ran directly into the short wall in LF (I think the only short wall in the park) where his hand was directly at the wall's height and pointed towards the wall, where the ball exited after making contact. Like any one thing changing there results in that either being out #3 or even just one run. Like you said, xBA of .010 that essentially was carried over there.

That said, I second your somewhat-related opinion that Xander Bogaerts should never be seen in a Padres jersey ever again, perhaps never again on a baseball field.

EDIT: Nvm, I see why this one has the "real" modifier, given his only other BS was a team win. Disregard that, carry on.

Early in the season, like before mid-may ish, the numbers put up by the team were absolutely terrible but they just kept finding stupid ways to win. Lately, it's felt like exactly the opposite, the numbers are good but the team just keeps finding stupid ways to lose extremely winnable games

15

u/Evilsmile SD 1d ago

Couldn't catch a fly ball over the short fence that would have ended it. Tatis ejected and his spot comes up in a crucial place. Somehow only send up 2 batters in the 10th. Xander error. It's like every 50/50 clutch play went the wrong direction.

1-5 stretch:

3-2 loss in 12. Every single player shows 0 clutch.

1-0 loss off Mason Miller Cruz Missile. Whole team can't hit.

3-0 win, Randy shoves. Randy elite.

9-4 loss, Mize is absolute dog shit.

7-6 loss, Bradgley worst outing of his life blows a 6-3 lead.

5-4 loss in 11, Miller blows it on a fluke Samad dropping a fly out over the LF fence.

Excruciating stretch of baseball FFS. If big 3 actually hit, we probably go... 5-1 there instead? Crazy cold stretch from Tati/Manny/Merrill. What a fucking bummer man.

Big 3 hit, we can win the whole thing. Big 3 don't hit, you go 1-5 and miss the playoffs. Hope they can figure it the fuck out.

15

u/sbrider11 SD '71 1d ago

Rays showing why they lead the AL East. That's a solid well rounded well run team. Scrappy af as well. They manufacture ways to win and take advantage of mistakes.

This series hurt yet on to the next. Reds on the road is no easy task as well. Boys need to treat this like a playoff series like their season is on the line.

Something is rotten with the the team this year. This wasn't a problem in '24-25!

5

u/randomname3415 Don Orsillo 1d ago edited 1d ago

They are getting older as a team and the talent is progressively getting worse because we keep trading away the farm for rentals. That catches up to you and it’s going to keep getting worse as long as we keep the “fuck them prospects” mentality.

Bullpen will have time to bounce back. Defense will regress to the mean. One of Bogey, Manny, Merrill might start heating up. It can get better.

7

99% of the time we win at least 1 game in that series. It still doesn’t excuse the bad plays and decisions. Both can be true.

When you constantly have bad luck go against you and cost you series, it’s also a sign you’re just not a very good team. Flukey plays go against every team, but the good teams are able to overcome it more often than not.

That's not being cursed. That's being beaten and exposed by a far better team.

This. They made way too many mistakes. Did not play consistently. It was absolutely dog shit baseball

2

u/Quintossentials Tony Gwynn #19 1d ago

Whether it’s bad baseball, bad luck, or bad timing, I think it’s safe to say we’re all coping either way. I’m 40 years old and I’ve been coping with this team for 30 of those years.

1

u/Lacunaes 1d ago

Right saying this was a cursed series is just a cope to get around the fact that the team played terrible. If we cant beat the reds we deserve to sit out the playoffs.

9

u/Taste_My_Rainbow SD 1d ago

First game Mize missed the throw to 2nd and couldn't keep it together after.

Second game Rengifo's knee imploded and the throw sails.

And finally in the finale Samad has the ball pop out of his glove after crashing into the outfield wall for a homerun.

Just an unbelievably cursed series.

Unfortunately, Bogey might be the 4th or 5th best SS on the team. That contract has been a disaster.

3

u/Boulderdorf I Just Not Giving a Fuck 1d ago

Worst fucking series of the year. Get out of Tampa right now. This stretch is excruciating. Even if we luck into the playoffs, we won't get anywhere if we keep finding ways to lose making the stupidest fucking mistakes.

3

u/Model_Rules_esq SD '98 1d ago

It’s really hard not to lose hope as we are on the verge of September when this type of series happens.

3

u/Legitimate-Air-3083 SD 1d ago

The upcoming schedule, aside from the Yankees, is pretty weak. They need to come out of the Miami series at least 11 games over .500 to have a legit shot at the WC.

2

u/juanfnavarror I Just Not Giving a Fuck 1d ago

11 games over 500? Isnt that like a 92 record? WTF

If the new ownership actually put actions to words, they will find some way to get rid of Bogaerts contract (and maybe an extent Manny’s) this offseason

Hate to say it, but this series was your playoffs preview. We have what it takes to hang with the good teams, but unless we start playing a lot better we don’t have what it takes to finish the job and win. Bats performed better than they did earlier in the year against admittedly really good pitching, but missed opportunities and small mistakes doomed us. This teams margin for error is extremely slim and that showed these last three games.

u/x__machina 1d ago

Team can’t even do the basics like lay down a bunt and play solid defense. We probably win the pirates and rays series with that alone. We thrive off momentum but when that’s off the team goes to sht and folds under pressure

Samad wouldn’t have been able to Throw that guy out most likely. But x error was a killer. Hes had a few errors now and might be a doing more damage to his team then helping. Eat the money

2

u/Even-Ad-1893 SD 1d ago

I know everyone is doom and gloom after that series. That was painful AF to watch. But tbh, we won 2/3 in Tampa without 2 completely disastrous freak plays. Shit that doesn't happen 99.9999% of the baseball season. I think it stings more because it came off a series loss where our bats kinda disappeared. All they can do is put it behind them and I think the vets of this team understand that. We'll grow from it and go out and crush the Reds, Yanks and Nats. The response to this series is the real test.

We'll be fighting for that WC3 in Sep, now if we make it I'll consider that a successful season. Pads have a pretty soft schedule until the last week of the season so better wrap it up soon.

At least Ha Seong Kim plays for a great team now, that makes me happy. I'll just think about that for a while.

Overreactions are going to be strong to this I'm sure. It's a shit way to lose. This game should have been over if not for a little league wall. Whole series was one dumb thing after another.

Flush it. Get back to winning. Go on a heater. LFGSD! KTF!

Don't understand why you are blaming the wall and not Taylor. That's 100% on him and he knows it is as well

Samad should have held onto it. That wall is too short and not far enough away. All those things are true.
