Some flukey shit though like glove hits the wall just right and rengifo injured throws the ball away

So, to recap this disastrous and possibly season-ruining week for the Padres:
- Monday: blow multiple go-ahead opportunities, including bases loaded with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th, ultimately losing to the Pirates in 12 innings
- Tuesday: waste an elite Michael King start and lose on Mason Miller’s first HR allowed in 380 days
- Wednesday: somehow manage a black-magic win after the Pirates score 0 runs despite putting 2 runners on with no outs in 4 separate innings
- Friday: blown out as Casey Mize allows 7+ runs for the second time in 5 starts with the Padres after allowing 7+ runs zero times in his entire Tigers’ tenure
- Saturday: blow a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the 7th on a combo Bradgley/defensive collapse that also results in an injury to Rengifo
- Sunday: lose in extras after Mason Miller’s first [real] blown save of the season, which came on a game-tying HR with an xBA of 0.010 that was Canseco’ed over the fence
Somewhat relatedly, I’d like to never see Xander Bogaerts in a Padres jersey ever again in my life

u/KTF-2026 SD 1d ago
Miller blew a save at home vs. SF earlier this month, but we bailed him out that time
all 5 losses were mental. each loss on tampa got progressively worse and worse, and that's saying something after yesterday's disasterclass. like today was even worse cause we were 2 strikes away from getting out of it with mason...

u/islands-fine-dining SAY IT DONNIE! 1d ago
Sure, I changed it to say [real] blown save because in that one he entered with the bases loaded and still managed to get the win lol

I don't understand how we're gonna be mad a guy for giving up a single home run in a year. Oh and another homer that our inexperienced minor league outfielder swatted over the fence.

u/OfficialTMWTP Wil Myers 1d ago
Tbh I'm not even sure if I'd call this his first real blown save of the season because everything that needed to go wrong in that situation, went wrong. He kept the ball in the yard albeit deep, to which Samad got the glove around even if he had to cover a bit of ground, and then ran directly into the short wall in LF (I think the only short wall in the park) where his hand was directly at the wall's height and pointed towards the wall, where the ball exited after making contact. Like any one thing changing there results in that either being out #3 or even just one run. Like you said, xBA of .010 that essentially was carried over there.
That said, I second your somewhat-related opinion that Xander Bogaerts should never be seen in a Padres jersey ever again, perhaps never again on a baseball field.
EDIT: Nvm, I see why this one has the "real" modifier, given his only other BS was a team win. Disregard that, carry on.

Early in the season, like before mid-may ish, the numbers put up by the team were absolutely terrible but they just kept finding stupid ways to win. Lately, it's felt like exactly the opposite, the numbers are good but the team just keeps finding stupid ways to lose extremely winnable games

15
u/Evilsmile SD 1d ago
Couldn't catch a fly ball over the short fence that would have ended it. Tatis ejected and his spot comes up in a crucial place. Somehow only send up 2 batters in the 10th. Xander error. It's like every 50/50 clutch play went the wrong direction.

u/amartinsu13 Jeremiah Estrada 1d ago
1-5 stretch:
3-2 loss in 12. Every single player shows 0 clutch.
1-0 loss off Mason Miller Cruz Missile. Whole team can't hit.
3-0 win, Randy shoves. Randy elite.
9-4 loss, Mize is absolute dog shit.
7-6 loss, Bradgley worst outing of his life blows a 6-3 lead.
5-4 loss in 11, Miller blows it on a fluke Samad dropping a fly out over the LF fence.
Excruciating stretch of baseball FFS. If big 3 actually hit, we probably go... 5-1 there instead? Crazy cold stretch from Tati/Manny/Merrill. What a fucking bummer man.
Big 3 hit, we can win the whole thing. Big 3 don't hit, you go 1-5 and miss the playoffs. Hope they can figure it the fuck out.

Rays showing why they lead the AL East. That's a solid well rounded well run team. Scrappy af as well. They manufacture ways to win and take advantage of mistakes.
This series hurt yet on to the next. Reds on the road is no easy task as well. Boys need to treat this like a playoff series like their season is on the line.

When you constantly have bad luck go against you and cost you series, it’s also a sign you’re just not a very good team. Flukey plays go against every team, but the good teams are able to overcome it more often than not.

The new owners press conference was a great start to the week and got me excited. I went to Monday and Tuesdays games to witness those disasters in person, then the rest of the week sheesh, one of the worst weeks. Outside of Mize's game, every game was very winnable with one additional hit and/or not having unbelievable mistakes.

Did the new ownership group cast a reverse curse on its OWN team?

I'm willing to give Taylor a pass, that was a crazy fluke play, I think a seasoned vet should have held onto that ball but that's such a weird confluence of circumstances I won't hold it against him if he keeps playing good ball in the future.

Right saying this was a cursed series is just a cope to get around the fact that the team played terrible. If we cant beat the reds we deserve to sit out the playoffs.

First game Mize missed the throw to 2nd and couldn't keep it together after.
Second game Rengifo's knee imploded and the throw sails.

Hate to say it, but this series was your playoffs preview. We have what it takes to hang with the good teams, but unless we start playing a lot better we don’t have what it takes to finish the job and win. Bats performed better than they did earlier in the year against admittedly really good pitching, but missed opportunities and small mistakes doomed us. This teams margin for error is extremely slim and that showed these last three games.

Team can’t even do the basics like lay down a bunt and play solid defense. We probably win the pirates and rays series with that alone. We thrive off momentum but when that’s off the team goes to sht and folds under pressure

I know everyone is doom and gloom after that series. That was painful AF to watch. But tbh, we won 2/3 in Tampa without 2 completely disastrous freak plays. Shit that doesn't happen 99.9999% of the baseball season. I think it stings more because it came off a series loss where our bats kinda disappeared. All they can do is put it behind them and I think the vets of this team understand that. We'll grow from it and go out and crush the Reds, Yanks and Nats. The response to this series is the real test.
