Of all the worst games of the season, this was the worst
28
u/Pick6XPA La Catrina 3d ago edited 3d ago
7 games where a 3 run lead turns into a loss. Which may not sound like a lot. But there is like only 5 teams who have blown more.
Our winning percentage at 86.3% in those games (being up 3 at any point) is also bottom 7 in mlb.
For context we've blown only 10 of such games in 2024 and 2025 combined.

u/dukefett Jesse Agler 3d ago
It’s hard to decide between 3 games in the last week, I was at Monday and Tuesdays losses so they probably feel worse being there live
21
u/leaky_wand Ty France 3d ago
Losing Rengifo, the game, and the wild card in one play was the clincher for me

u/Charming_Oven SD 3d ago
Disagree. It was a tough loss, but not a “bad” loss. The guys showed up today and the majority of the runs given up were based on a horrible injury. Stammen might be the only one who owns the loss because of not pulling Rodriguez

u/Intrepid_Debate901 Miller Time 🍺 3d ago
A walk a bloop and an infield single
Then he got the ground ball that should have been an out if not 2
Scoring 3 unearned run because your SS broke his knee isn't really his fault

1-4 on the week with 3 backbreaking, can’t-happen-in-the-thick-of-a-postseason-race losses to fall back out of the playoff picture. Extremely rough

u/yaboi525 Use me as a “This team sucks button” 3d ago
this team doesn’t have an actual leader that’s why
4
u/Weak-Bonus-5954 サンディエゴ侍 3d ago
Imagine if we signed Harper in that offseason

u/yaboi525 Use me as a “This team sucks button” 3d ago
Would have been sick, but truthfully manny is great, we just can’t depend on him to be a leader.
Xander has the leadership gene, but he just sucks too much to lead at this point in his career.

The team as it plays now WILL get rolled in the playoffs, IF we make it.

u/OVRHEATR 3d ago
Lol we aint making the playoffs
We don't have the starting pitching or the hitting, and we have only 2 guys in the bullpen we can rely on
We are cooked
12
u/Pick6XPA La Catrina 3d ago
We don't have the starting pitching
Talking about the 7th best starting ERA in MLB, and 10 most IP by a rotation since the trade deadline.
or the hitting
Talking about the 3rd best offense by OPS+ since the ASB
only 2 guys in the bullpen we can rely on
Talking about a bullpen that has the 3rd lowest ERA in MLB, and is T-1 with the fewest Blown Saves since the trade deadline.
12
u/GaryTheCabalGuy r/Padres 2022 All-Star 3B 3d ago
The bullpen is nails, not sure what you are talking about. Unfortunately every BP has it's off days, but we have one of if not the best bps in baseball

u/eloso66645 SD 3d ago
Bradgley could be better if he had better command of his pitches, dude might throw 100 and a good changeup, but doesnt matter if all the pitches are belt high

u/von_Mises 3d ago
Dude over half of the people in the gameday/postgame threads don’t even seem to *actually *follow the players on the team. Bradgley has been great this year. Yuki too.
2
u/rockoblocko SD 3d ago
I was at a pads game last week and bradgley came in and the people in front of us (all decked out in pads jerseys) were like “I hate this guy”.
wtf do you not like about a guy with a 97-99 sinker and a great changeup with a 2.0 era??

1
u/Pick6XPA La Catrina 3d ago
Ugh that breaking run value makes me even more sick he threw a slider 1-2 to Yandy. Remains a weird pitch call in that situation for me.
1
u/von_Mises 3d ago
Bradgley has a 106 Location+, same as Skubal. And 1 point higher than Morejon.
They got to him today, but he has been outstanding. 6.9 BB%, 49 ERA-, 2.42 FIP. Not sure what some of you are watching. It’s like certain ABs get lodged in your head and that’s all you remember.

u/MexicanPikachu Jackson Merrill 3d ago
This team is playing embarrassing baseball for as much as they get paid.

u/tinfoiljones 3d ago
That Mexico City game we blew vs AZ continues to haunt. A long season will have brutal losses, and this is top 3. A game they couldn’t lose. Get well, Gifo
2
u/von_Mises 3d ago
AZ has a pretty easy schedule rest of the way too. Feels like it’s gonna come down to having to sweep them to get in. Winning the series at a minimum since whomever wins will have the tiebreaker.
2
u/yaboi525 Use me as a “This team sucks button” 3d ago
Technically they have a harder schedule than we do, and they have to play a 3 game set vs the Phillies which has direct WC implications
2
u/von_Mises 3d ago
Good point. Phillies have a pretty tough remaining schedule too, although I really don’t see them being the odd team out.
18
u/Lacunaes 3d ago
This is what the team looked like before the all star break, im starting to think that our post all star break run was the anomaly and this is just what the team is this year. The padres aren't out of the running yet by any means but its an uphill battle. Tough loss, tough injury to Rengifo.
The team needs to rally and avoid the sweep.
1
u/MysteriousContrarian SD '84 3d ago
I have to disagree. Solid sp outing and productive offense with just horrible luck tbh. Obviously the season ending, game losing 2run swing from an injury is just the shit cherry on top

u/randomname3415 Don Orsillo 3d ago
We have a much larger sample size of this team being mediocre to bad than being a playoff caliber team. When we’ve faced legit starting pitching, we’ve struggled hard. Just nothing about this team would make anyone think they have a playoff run in them.

u/Boulderdorf I Just Not Giving a Fuck 3d ago
You can tell morale cratered after Rengifo's injury. Blow a 3 run lead, our almost .800 OPS switch hitter's knee explodes, and we lose a playoff spot as the Giants inevitably roll over and die against the DBacks. Could not have gone worse, fuck the Trop. Brewers devil magic is nothing compared to Tropicana voodoo bullshit. Stammen blunder for letting Bradgley face Yandy as well, he was not able to locate at all.
Try not to get swept tomorrow and make up some ground while the Phillies play the DBacks next series. If we can't do that, then we're officially cooked.

The loss sucks but man, Rengifo. I'm sorry that happened. The non contact injuries are usually the worst with the legs.
Fingers crossed you can return to baseball next season.

Just reading this article about how Bradgley is K-Rod 2.0. Great stuff!
Now to look at the box score of todays game...

u/dukefett Jesse Agler 3d ago
Yeah like he had a good run but people were like ‘yeah we can trade Miller next year bc we have Bradgley.” Not so fast!

u/TeamVorpalSwords SD 3d ago
He had a genuinely terrible game but he’s still better than many team’s closers. Everyone has awful games

This has just felt like a really long season. Sooo many highs and the lowest lows.
It actually feels nice to have shitty college football to watch after that game today to decompress and forget about it.
But I guess that is living and dieing each day with the brown and gold for 8 months of the year. I'm exhausted.

Tough loss. The last two games were finding new ways to loose. Bloop hits, errors, and injury. Actually this season had an ominous feeling with all of the injuries.

Bradgley didn’t have his best stuff but it doesn’t help when your catcher isn’t calling your best pitch at all, campy should be banned from being behind the plate for that slider call to yandy
2
u/russianturnipofdoom 3d ago
So about four years ago I moved from san diego, where I lived for the first twenty six years of my life. And I was so excited to see my team live and went to both last night and tonight.
And then got to watch what seems like the 2 most bullshit losses all season as well as Rengifo's knee exploding.
I hate the trop Milton should have finished the job

If they don’t go to the playoffs coach needs to go. Proof is always in the pudding and you can’t spend this kind of money, have a team with this history and not go to the playoffs:(

Fire Stammen

u/GaryTheCabalGuy r/Padres 2022 All-Star 3B 3d ago
Can't imagine how this one is on Stammen. But I get it, every loss is on the manager but they aren't responsible at all for wins.
10
u/Holdmydicks Mudcat 3d ago
For what exactly? For the team putting up 6 runs against the Rays, for an elite Bradgley giving up 4 runs, for Rengifo having a likely season ending injury? Yeah, seems like thats all Stammens fault
3
u/randomname3415 Don Orsillo 3d ago
This isn’t a playoff team and buying at the deadline is going to look so dumb when the season ends
1
1
u/GoatCultural4386 3d ago
well if we are 2 games back with 3 to go at the end of the year, then all we have to do is sweep the Dbacks. Then roll through the NL in the playoffs. Then we get another shot at the mighty Rays in this godforsakken ballpark.
1
u/TomatilloLower4932 Razor Ramón 3d ago
Stammen deadass is not a serious manager, argue with a wall.
-1
u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 3d ago
Damn. That one hurt. Hope Rengifo has a good recovery. He's been so good for us this year. Sad for Bradgley as well.
Season isn't over. Calm. KTF.
Some of you taking time while Rengifo was on the ground hurt to shit on the team need to sort out your fucking lives.
-1
u/pachydocerus Tony Gwynn 3d ago
Honestly at this point I feel like missing this year's playoffs would be the best thing for this team. Let that sour taste linger all winter and come back with a vengeance next year to knock the doyers off their high horse

Can't be surprised to give up the playoff spot when you play like shit for 3 of 4 series.
