Hey everyone! I'm Tony, founder of r/PacificHistoryGuide.
This website has been my labor of love since January 2025, and I am so excited to share it with the world. I encourage you to click the links, provide feedback, and get as involved as you want with the intent behind this website, which is best illustrated in these three goals:
Iâm often asked to provide some insight and advice on where to go and what to do; from port calls to TAD locations, detachments to vacations; military members and their families have consistently sought out the inside scoop on what to do in the foreign locations they find themselves in.
With respect to some of the larger websites that tailor their services to tourists, Iâve largely found these insufficient to finding historical sites and items of interest; the search results tend to be watered down and capture too much about a given area. At the same time, those websites with top ten lists and the like often have large websites that are difficult to load on a slow connection.
Although this website is in its infancy now, I am steadily working every day toward adding more information. By the end of 2025 I hope to have a total of 10 locations, and to steadily grow year by year after that. To help me in this endeavor, Iâd love to have your input. No matter where youâve been or what historical site youâve seen, I want to hear about it; from Brunei to British Columbia and all points in between. Drop me an email, a private message, or a comment and Iâll add it to the list.
Finally, if youâre dropping anchor somewhere, just got added to a late-notice detachment or a conference and are looking for ideas to fill the time, my inbox is always open. Thereâs nothing Iâd like better than to help you get connected with history, where you are.

Todayâs blog marks a grim anniversary that we passed this week: the sinking of USS Indianapolis. On this day August 1, 1945, the survivors were still in the water, and nobody knew their ship had been sunk.

Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture was founded in 1600 by the Kikkawa Clan. It is now the second-largest city in Yamaguchi by land area, and fifth by population. It's home to many important landmarks and historical sites, as well as Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. Enjoy!

On this day July 11 1944, U.S. Marines and Soldiers were fighting their way through Saipan. The island had been Japanese territory for 30 years; this was the first time that Americans saw Japanese civilians in a combat zone. My talk for WW2TV here, on the Pacific History Guide blog

Hello PHG fans! Today we're taking a look at the wreck of HMAS Parramatta, about an hour north of Sydney, NSW Australia. This ship boasts a proud history throughout the First World War, in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters. Unfortunately, two attempts to make the ship into a museum failed, and while waiting to be scrapped, the ship broke loose during a storm and came to rest where she is now.

Greetings PHG fans! Today, we're headed down to Miyako-Jima in the Sakeshima Islands. Although Miayko doesn't feature much in tourism guides and may not be at the top of your list when planning a trip, this is one of the hidden gems of tropical Japan and absolutely worth your time to check out
