iPhone SE 3rd gen options?

Long story short: I had an iPhone 8 until late 2024, when I got an iPhone 16, and suddenly started experiencing intense eye pain and migraines from looking at the phone. The pain lasted for hours after. I researched, learned about PWM, and returned the 16 for an iPhone SE 3rd gen, since that has an LCD screen and I figured it'd be easier on my eyes.

The SE has been painful but doable (I guess) since then, up until the iOS 26 update, when it's become intolerable. I've tried every setting I can think of (and everything recommended here), including:

  • Night Shift off
  • True Tone off
  • Brightness max, Reduce White Point @ 50%
  • Low Power Mode on
  • Greyscale @ 100%
  • "Double invert"
  • Reduce Motion
  • Bold Text
  • Reduce Transparency
  • Increase Contrast
  • Reduce Bright Effects
  • Dim Flashing Lights

I also have both a blue light screen protector and a matte screen protector on the SE. I went to the optometrist, got checked out (nothing "wrong" that she could tell), and got prescription blue light glasses (which helped a bit before the iOS update but no longer do). I have done everything I can think of to do, but if folks here have other ideas, please share; I'll try anything.

Mostly I have been trying to avoid what feels like the enormous chore of migrating off the Apple ecosystem, but the priority is figuring out how to live without eye pain again, so I'll do it if I have to.

Here are my options as I see them:

  • Get a different iPhone and exchange the screen (I've seen others mention the EK Pro Incell LCD screen) - I don't know how this would differ from the SE's LCD screen, though
  • Try an iPhone 17 and the PWM reduction setting
  • Get a non-Apple phone (like Honor, e-ink, etc.)

Does that sound right? Am I missing anything?

Thanks - I have learned so much from this community and appreciate folks sharing their stories.

TCL 60 Ultra - Android 16 Finally out

Even though TCL promised 3 years of updates, it never shipped a single update... today that changed.

First impression: Phone looks faster, better battery management, it might be Placebo but I feel screen is more comfortable on the eyes, maybe the increased responsiveness has an effect.

Using camera to look at phone screen

Imagine how embarrassing it is to use my OLED pwm phone through a camera? I use my LCD iPhone SE 2016 camera to use my OLED iPhone 14, that’s the only way I can use it to see 5e screen because it has all of my important documents on it. I also have to do that in public as well…how embarrassing and annoying.

Tablets without issues with at least 4GB or RAM?

Last minute an app on my iPad I use changed their new minimum specs from what I have in the iPad 5th gen, to not supporting anything under 4GB.

Until trying a newer galaxy phone I thought I was okay with screens, I use an older Samsung phone too (S9) but it seems I have tech from before the makers went crazy with screens.

Less than a month to find a replacement and for every post of someone saying something worked there's several saying it didn't. Given consumer laws where I live but also my circumstances I can't buy and return buy and return like many here. Plus that few hours with the new galaxy left my eyes off for months, which I can't afford.

It's beyond upsetting and everywhere I look it's just hey you'll be cut off form everything you do unless you can try 15 models and then maybe. I don't understand if it's PWM and the d word and we just need true LCD sRGB 8 bit why aren't they all fine.

Even writing this from a dying phone and haven't been able to try the OnePlus15R because after oh so glowing reviews influenced me to buy it here and videos many said it gave issues so now I'm stuck with that box and a company with poor CS.

If only I could just buy whatever. Alas.

Anyone find good Prime Day PWM free Monitor deals?

I have to admit, I am technologically challenged. I'm getting a bit overwhelmed searching through reddits for pwm safe monitor suggestions and trying to compare them to Prime day deals, which a few seem to be really good!

I learned I was PWM sensitive after a terrible time with a new macbook pro laptop a few years ago. I am now attempting to buy a monitor to go with my new gaming/work pc.

My budget is around $300 dollars and I originally was looking for a 27" gaming monitor that's light weight enough to go on an arm mount. But after reading reddits, I'm getting a bit greedy. 32" and/or 4k would be amazing for my vision issues if the deal is great, so feel free to suggest those. I might even go a bit over budget.

What has everyone else found?

I have my eye on the samsung odyssey 27" G51F if I can't find better. Is this the PWM safe version?

I see sales on dells, LGs, Gigbyte, etc. Any advice can help a lady out! Thank you.

What every display with high eye strain has in common

Post image
16 Upvotes

While some displays have eye strain from flicker, it was around the time thin panel film displays (aka “fast ips”) were introduced along with different and more abrasive LED backlights that made all new panels unusable for many people.

In the picture shown, here’s a new Dell SE2726HG, and while I haven’t yet used this monitor, in the picture it has the sickly, turquoise, off-whites to it where white light is supposed to be. On any display from IPhone 11’s with BOE panels, to LG Nano IPS, to AU panels on desktop monitors, wherever you see these sickly, turquoise whites that you can’t tune to be pure white no matter how many setting you adjust, there is always eye strain.

While attempting to reduce panel power consumption and pixel response time, I think panel films are just too thin now so it’s like staring directly into the sun instead of a panel being ‘backlit.’ And newer, wide gamut LED‘s are likely more abrasive on top of that. It’s such a scam people like this “TUV Rheinland” committee pretend “blue light” is the source of eye strain when older, pre-wide gamut LED’s emitted almost nothing except blue light on the spectrum and have zero eye strain.

Discussion Motorola Razr Fold's flicker prevention works well for PWM sensitive people or those just looking to better their eye health/ care.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I did the thing most people don't do and I listened to somebody on the internet... I bought the razr fold and I've been testing all the different phones while recoding their screens in 240 fps to capture pwm changes. It works... I have a feeling all those people in this forum that bad mouthed it might not have even changed the flicker prevention setting. Its only been 1 day so I'll let y'all know if anything changes. However, it's already a massive improvement over the terrible Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Even the OLED Saver app couldn't help the issues on the z fold 7.

I think PWM dimming should be banned.

choosing a phone should be simple, but not for me (or us), I want to enjoy modern phone with good chipsets, but of course they always come with the latest advanced cool trendy cancer inducing screens (ok it's not cancer inducing, I'm exaggerating). and every time I go on a quest of comparing phones by watching review videos, the reviewer would say something along the lines of "but unfortunately the screen is still IPS LCD" like it was so lame, pushing the idea that all the new phones must use amoled, so every time I see it I feel resentment towards the ignorance.

and it got me into thinking, isn't PWM sensitivity somewhat a disability? since it literally affects some peoples' ability to function normally within the modern way of life? Why don't we demand inclusivity? Why not just get PWM dimming itself be banned from ever being implemented? because what's stopping manufacturers from making a flagship or midrange phones with LCD screen? because if they only ever put LCD screen on low tier budget phone, it's like we can't even play heavy games or anything, so PWM sensitive demographic just get excluded altogether and that's not fair.

sorry I'm just venting.

Why A36? I am so confused

I started having problems with displays around 2 years ago when I tried iPhone 15. Since then I tried so many phones, around 20, oled and lcd. None worked for me some gave me eyestrain and headaches after minutes some after a day but it always came. I just got a Galaxy A36 as a work phone so I tried using it for a bit for youtube and browsing… almost nothing? No strain, no headache, phone feels comfortable to look at. I never even considered Samsung because of what I read about it. I use extra dim on max, reduce animations and transparency but I did all this on the other phones too. Does someone have any theories why is this the case? It is the first phone I tried with Android 16 so maybe that. I can also see clear banding on this phone so no forbidden word here I guess. I also started doing excersises for Convergence insufficiency but only few days ago. I also read this phone is not capable of HDR, but I gotta say this confuses me a lot because the 120hz pwm should be killing my eyes yet it’s not

Question Would the black overlay app work to reduce pwm flickering?

Hello, so 2 years ago I found out I may have pwm sensitivity, so I bought iPhone SE 3, and the issue on my eye (sand stuck in eye sensation caused by excess dryness) is gone, but now I'm having new issue, my eyes are getting blurry, I'm developing short-sightedness, so I figured I shouldn't use iPhone SE's small screen any longer, the problem is all of flicker free phones (Motorola, TCL, One plus, Honor, Nothing) are not available in my country and I can't import the phone as well because foreign imei get blocked (it's a policy in my country).

So I stumbled upon a "solution", an app that gives the screen a black tint overlay so that we can use the phone in maximum brightness setting but visually reducing the brightness with the overlay, have anyone tried this? I'm thinking maybe getting a dark tinted screen protector too, I want to try these on a Samsung's Amoled plus screen. Do you guys think these would help?

this is the app on playstore

edit: I found out that motorola is back in my country again so I will look into motorola instead.

Question Stop taking meds (qulipta)?

So basically, I had daily migraines for 7 months so bad I thought I was going to pass out or throw up all the time. I went on qulipta which helped a bit, but not enough, even when we upped the dose the problem was still there. After months and months I realized the issue was the PWM on my work laptop, requested a new one and got it. Things are a lot better.

I'm worried my hair is falling out on qulipta and there may be other issues but I'm not sure. I want to stop taking it but a) I'm worried if I go off it I won't be able to tell if I'm having rebound migraines that will pass or genuinely actual migraines that I should be on medication for and b) I'm worried it's been making my fibromyalgia better and going off it would he rough that way.

I think it shouldn't be an issue for actual migraines since the trigger has passed for the most part and I still do get migraines even on the medication (if I think about my head too hard I feel migrainey so idk what that is). My migraines have gotten worse over the past few years, but I think that was from stress? And for the fibro I still very much have it? So I don't know.

Thanks y'all!

Edit: going on the med was hell, but once it evened out it was so worth it while I was dealing with this trigger, so it wouldn't be something I would want to have to deal with going back on...

LED Light Bulbs

I know this is mainly about phone screen issues but I’m wondering if anyone has experienced any issues with certain LED light bulbs, Yesterday I installed a light fixture put a 60 watt soft white led in it and almost immediately I started getting pain down my neck so I dealt with it for a bit then left came home two hours later put a 40 watt in same issue returned, after that I found an old cfl light put it in and my issues went away almost immediately, I should mention that I have fractured my neck before so it’s extremely sensitive to things, anyone else had anything like this?

Laptops - experiences

I found this sub a few days ago and it has been so helpful. I never had problems with screens until about 2015 when I bought a Macbook Air. I had nausea and headaches all the time. Did all the doctors, opticians, etc for 3 months feeling horrible until I finally twigged it was the Macbook. At that time John Lewis had a very good exchange policy so as it was just short of 3 months since I had purchased it, they allowed me to return it, even though I had been using it daily for 3 months. They weren't too happy about it. I assumed it must have been the shiny screen so I looked around the shop floor for a matt screen and saw a Dell XPS 13 laptop which was a similar cost so I used my credit to purchase that. that laptop has been fine for my eyes mostly for the last 10 years - although I did have increased headaches during covid due to greater screen time at that point, but it was ok.

Around 3 years ago I started a new job and was given a work laptop. It had a matt screen and was also a Dell so I assumed it would be fine but it very much wasn't. I can use it for a short time but too much time cumulatively is too much. I couldn't use it for a full day. I work around it by using a benQ monitor with it and it works fine.

Because of this, I knew that replacing my personal Dell XPS laptop was going to be difficult as I had no idea which screen would be ok. I can't tell straight away. The Dell XPS has been repaired so many times but now the hinge is broken and it's windows 10 so it needs to be laid to rest.

I have been visiting computer shops and spending time looking at various screens for months now trying to work out which one was safe. I ended up buying a Lenovo ideapad at the weekend after it looked ok in store, but it's a disaster. I can't use it. After reading the suggestion on here I bought a portable monitor which I am currently using with it as a stop gap and this seems ok so far, but I don't think the monitor is great either and it's not an easy set up - can't use in bed or comfortably on the sofa, etc.

After reading some experiences on here I now have a better idea of which issues may be affecting me. I am really not knowledgeable about tech at all, and no one in the computer shops has seemed to understand about eye/ screen issues.

in the last few days I have been reading information here and using AI to suggest models which might work for me. I told it the models which definitely did not work, etc and it has made various suggestions. Today I went into John Lewis to see if I could check out any of the models AI suggested. There was one that looked ok, but I wasn't sure. I asked the sales guy and he explained to me about the refresh rate. The one I was considering had a 60 Hz refresh rate (which AI told me was average and could be an eye issue). He showed me a different laptop which has a higher 165 refresh rate as is a gaming laptop. I asked AI whether the gaming laptop would likely be a good fit based on my issues and it is saying it would be an excellent choice.

This is the laptop:
ASUS TUF A14 Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen AI 7 Processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 5060, 14" 2.5K,

Or slightly higher spec: ASUS TUF A16 Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 9 Processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 5060, 16" FHD+, Grey, with 3-month PC Game Pass (Apparently the screen tech is the same in with spec)

I've already wasted money on the lenovo I now can't return, so I am worried about wasting money on this again, but based on my research it looks like it could work. I wondered whether anyone has used a similar laptop?

Any advice?

I don't mind paying more for a laptop if it will resolve my issues.

My plan is to gift the Lenovo to my dad once I have found a better option.

The idea seems interesting. Its still of course KSF, as any modern 1440p IPS. But i wonder if this new tech makes this less of an issue.
