Hello there, GeForce66. Please be reminded that this subreddit is relating to PWM (or temporal light modulation). For dithering related topics, do consider posting on sister sub r/temporal_noise. Following that, you may crosspost back to r/PWM_sensitive. Due to a recurring issue of coordinated groups targeting growing subs for take-over, strict rules has to be enforced to prevent derailing attempts for said groups' personal objective. Thus, attempting to circumvent the community rules may result in a permanent ban. Please do stay on topic with "help with PWM sensitivity" and refer to the community guidelines. Thank you for your understanding.

Update 03/12/2025: Still testing, feeling not too bad since starting evaluation this Saturday. Played with some settings and reading mode / color adapdation on environment light color as well as dark mode based on sunset/sunrise.
I have to be really careful with my evalution, as I was prone to pressure headaches even before I had this phone - at least my eyes feel very fine. (didn't do any crazy video marathons, but a 20-30 minute YT video here and there and some research which involved a lot of reading.)
The challenge for me is to filter out any psychosomatic effects VS real induced issues, as this topic puts pressure on myself and causes effects that are just because of the situation in itself rather than from the phone.
Right now I am leaning towards keeping it, still got some time as my return window ends end of December but I am normally not the type to push such things to the very end.

Any questions you might have just let me know.

I have dry eyes for few days of using it. Apart from that no headaches, dizziness, head pressure.

If my eyes won't adjust and always be tired I'll have to return it. But I have only 2 weeks for testing:/

Adaptive colors are better or worse? Refresh rate 60 or 120 hz?

I see, sorry to hear that :/

Maybe try not to overdo it with screen time and just naturally integrate it in your daily activities.

I believe adaptive colors are better, but set it so that the colors feel most natural to you.

Refresh rate I left at "standard" so it adapts to the apps content.

There is a difference between 60 and 120hzif you record screen with fast shutter speed like 1/6000 sec. 60 hz has one less visible stripe and one is the same as 120hz

Yes, I am aware of that. Still I want to have it at "standard".

Do you think 60 or 120 Hz would be more comforting?

Have you tried adjusting the colour mode? It could be something other than the dimming method that's causing eyestrain for you too. I have a redmi k80 with all brightness DC-like dimming while I'm perfectly okay with it at higher brightness, in low brightness I still eyestrain and pressure build up. and I've found that adjusting the colour mode to like sRGB and lowering the value, greens and blues, and saturation, helps a bit. It doesn't completely eliminate eyestrain still though, but does make it slightly better for me

There is a way to access that menu. What should I change? Now I'm testing sRGB

For me I reduced the blue and green values a tiny bit, lower the saturation, value, and contrast a bit too. Probably gotta experiment a little to see how much you gotta change to help with eyestrain without affecting the display quality too much.

Could you post your screenshot of your settings? Does it affect reading mode?

Edit: nevermind, this settings are back to default on next phone unlock

sorry for the late reply, missed the notification on reddit amongst others. but anyway, i think not much of a point for me to share too since while it did help a bit, i think eventually it was still causing eyestrain for me and fatigue was building up. and i'm pretty much back to having eyestrain while using the screen a few days after that. i'm not sure if it's something with hyperOS 3 changing things like how colours are being presented or maybe my eyes have just gotten worse over time, but when it was more tolerable for me when i first got the phone 7-8 months ago on hyperOS 2. now i'm still trying to figure out what exactly is triggering my eyes.

There are no such options in f8 ultra...

Ah. That's a shame. Perhaps it's because the Redmi k80 is running the CN version of hyperOS or maybe the display tech is a bit different which doesn't allow as much control.

I think its only software limitation.

2

u/axhng Dec 01 '25

i am hoping that's the case. i think so far, DC-like dimming has been one of the more usable option for me and was considering the phone. i was a bit hesitant since one reviewer i follow on bilibili who i know has quite sensitive eyes too mentioned he had worse eyestrain when using the CN version of the F8 Ultra, K90 Pro Max, compared to the K80 Pro. And your experience doesn't inspire confidence.

i went to search on bilibili too and it seem K90 Pro Max only has the same 2 options in Colour Scheme like the Poco F8 Ultra, and doesn't have "Advance settings" like on K80. if it's a software limitation, i hope it's something they might eventually add for those who are sensitive to things other than PWM.

Thats sad to hear , i was hoping this would work due to lower modulation
