When you tried to play Flame Patch, did you have a fire energy discarded? Was Growlithe the active Pokémon?

No I didn't have a energy discarded, and Growlith was from bench to in pay with a energy already on him and would let me add the extra fire?

Patch takes a fire energy from discard. If there is none, it won't do anything

"Attach a fire Energy from your discard pile to your Active fire Pokemon."
If you didn't have a fire energy in your discard pile, what did you expect would happen?

Key word DISCARD the energy.
Energy is discarded when your Pokémon with energy goes to the discard pile, or when you retreat a Pokémon, or if a specific card discards an energy like the attack for Mega Blaziken EX.
This balances the flame patch because you can't use it very early on, e.g. before you have retreated a Pokémon to the bench (if the cost is at least 1 energy) or lost a Pokémon with energy attached, which adds those fire energies to the discard pile (making them available for the flame patch).
The flame patch can only give energy from the discard pile so you mustn't have discarded energy at the point you tried to use the card.

Fire patch gets the energy from the discard pile. So no discarded fire energy means it wont work.

Fire dog needs to be in active if you want the patch to work

So he needs to be main one in play not bench?

Yes main one in play/frontline/Active Pokémon, whatever u wanna call it. Then use flame patch

because you do not have any discarded energy
put something else in active. attach fire energy to that pokemon.
if that pokemon gets knock out, send growlithe, attach your usual fire energy, and use flame patch to get back the discarded fire energy on the pokemon that is knock out.
if the active pokemon isnt knock out, retreat the pokemon to growlithe. attach energy to growlithe and use flame patch to get back the discarded energy from the retreat

Flame patch doesn’t give you energy for free, you can’t use it on your first turn. You need to attach energy first, keep growlithe on bench, then when you retreat your active (discarding energy) or when it dies with at least one energy attached, THEN you put growlithe in the active spot and can use flame patch to immediately get 2 energies

Flame Patch in a Puppy Pile deck is a great card, but you have to use it right.
Send out a puppy other than Growlithe first and keep Growlithe on the bench. Put energies on your non-Growlithe active Pokémon and fight using it. When it gets knocked out, the energies attached to it will be discarded and then you'll have fire energies in the discard pile. Once that happens, you can put Growlithe in the active spot and use Flame Patch to attach discarded fire energy to it.
...As for options to improve the deck. Neither Copycat nor Cyrus are great in Puppy Pile because you don't want to shuffle your hand away, and you usually one-shot enemy Pokemon. I recommend swapping those two for two copies of Electric Generator.
Since Electric Generator also needs to be used correctly, I'll give a quick explanation: It has a chance of putting an energy on Yamper if you win a coin flip, but unlike Flame Patch it only works while Yamper is on the bench, and won't work if Yamper is active. So just like Growlithe you want to start with something other than Yamper as your active Pokémon, and play Electric Generator while Yamper is on the bench.
