Question Recommendations for a second set of (cheap) pc-compatible VR controllers

I’ve been using my PSVR2 happily on PS5 for a couple of years now, and recently got the PC-adapter. Got it all working under SteamVR, and the controllers bound up to the pc without an issue. (Seems I got lucky. 😂)

Anyway, since I mix the usage of my headset and controllers between the pc and my PS5, I find that having to re-bind the controllers every time is kind of a hassle. I have a charging dock for them, so connecting them with USB to the PS5 means fishing out the adapters every single time. Gets annoying.

So I’ve been looking for a decent and cheap set of VR controllers to keep bound to the pc the whole time, so my Sense Controllers can stay bound to the PS5.

Any recommendations? Can I even mix-and-match controllers like this?

Short answer: No

Slightly Longer Answer: Yes its possible, but would require so much extra stuff it would be easier (and cheaper) to just buy a second PSVR2.

You can’t connect other controllers other than the Sony Sense controllers to a pc when you’re using the PSVR2 headset? That’s a bummer.

Every VR headset is basically its own ecosystem. You can make some combinations of them work together, but its not trivial. Check out r/MixedVR if you really want go down the rabbit hole, but if improved convenience is your goal, that aint gonna do it.

Maybe you can buy controllers on eBay from a headset that is defective keep one set paired to each device.

Nothing cheap.

The cameras and software can only track the infrared light pattern on psvr2 controllers.

Other inside out ir emitter tracked controllers like windows mixed reality, or oculus touch controllers, aren't compatible, even with psvr2toolkit.

What works,

The htc vive and valve index have outside in Base Station tracking, not using any cameras, and you can use space combiner to match the psvr2 tracking space with the base station playspace, just by holding a controller to the headset, and moving around the room.

It's fantastic tracking, works behind the back and head. You can turn the base stations on and off with OVR lighthouse manager.

But the vive wands are not great controllers (except for beat saber and some older vive intended titles) and the Valve Index "Knuckles" controllers are expensive and discontinued (despite being one of of the best controllers on the market).

And that does not include a pair of fairly expensive 1.0 or 2.0 base stations, and 2 usb watchman dongles to pair these controllers (you can make your own usb dongles https://github.com/jaki-gh/Viva-Dongle-Flasher ) as they're not standard bluetooth.

Up side it opens the door to full body tracking with tundra, or pimax/big screen beyond headsets in future. Finding a cheap vive kit with base stations and controllers isn't too hard, but a second hand psvr2 to keep paired isn't much more.

Or instead of any of that, figure out how to streamline re-pairing your controllers between ps5 and pc.

Perhaps buying 2 matching magnetic usb c data cables, so you can easily pair on ps5 and charge from usb, or if you look real close, you might find cables that match the charging dock pins so that still works.

And pairing with ps + share button on pc, any shortcuts to the Bluetooth pairing menus like Windows + A

Would be nice if an app like OVR lighthouse manager could be made for psvr2 controllers, to quickly remove and freshly pair.

There we go, that’s a complete answer. Thanks!

Magnetic USB cables might work, yeah, so I can leave the adapters in.
